It’s the Mammoth Monday closest to the Lunar New Year, so this seemed like an excellent themed shave today. This is one of my top tier scents, one that I think everyone should give a whirl.

I decided to buy Bonaparte on a lark, because /u/StirlingSoap mentioned on Facebook that it is strong and divisive.

Strong, sure. And perhaps divisive, but frankly I think the scent is really nice.

Uitwaaien is an absolute pleasure. I will probably do a posted review of this sometime soon.

Christmas Eve calls for Christmas Eve. I’ve mentioned before how this scent reminds me of Christmas Eves at my grandparents’ house as a kid. The scent just really does it for me, everything about it is wonderful. Great last shave before Christmas.

First shave since the new water softener was installed yesterday. The plumber said that it could take a few days for all the hard water to get out of the hot water tank, but already there is a night and day difference. The lather was so much easier to form and felt softer and slicker. I’m excited to see the difference as the hard water works its way out of the system, and suggest everyone try a soft water shave.

Lovely shave. The GUTL and the Nebula worked well with the Omnibus base, and of course Vespers is a top tier scent. Another great Christmas Shave.

  • Here’s a rundown of the process:

    1. Open soap container.
    2. Scoop out a wad of soap.
    3. Place wad of soap into a bowl or scuttle, pressing it thin.
    4. With a damp brush, swirl your brush in this soap until it develops into a thick protolather. You may need to add a little water, but not too much.
    5. When you have a good protolather, move to your face. Begin using standard face lathering techniques to build a base of protolather on your beard area.
    6. Once the lather base has been built, move back to your bowl. Add water, building volume to your lather, getting it slick and ready to use.
    7. Move back to the face, adding more water to the brush to refine the lather on the face and preparing for the first pass.
    8. Finalize your lather in your bowl, bringing that bowl lather to your face and mixing it up, giving you a Grand Unified Lather.
    9. As you move forward with your second and third passes, the lather in the bowl will serve as your Lather Reservoir, enabling you to not run out of lather for three, maybe four passes.

It’s called the GUTL for Grand Unified Theory of Lathering.

  • Wednesday SOTD Thread - November 29, 2023
  • I essentially do a combination bowl lather/face lather called the GUTL. Essentially begin building your lather in your bowl, continue on face, then back to bowl, until you get a good lather from the combination of the two.

Just love using the G20 whenever I can.

One of the main reasons I repeat my shaving setup day after day is I have soap left in the bottom of my scuttle from GUTLing and don’t feel like scooping it out and putting it back in the container.

That and this setup is fucking awesome.

    Server-wide Rules

Now that we are beginning to see more members, I wanted to open up the topic of server-wide rules. I adapted the server-wide rules from the /r/WetShaving subreddit rules, since I figured that was a good baseline. But they are more geared towards a subreddit rather than a server.

I don’t intend on taking any action on new rules until we have had at least a week of discussion, unless someone points out a glaring error that needs to be immediately fixed. However, if there is anything you think needs to be added, deleted, or changed, please discuss here.

    We Are Now Federated!

Just a quick heads-up that I federated our server with Lemmy.ml, which is the "big" Lemmy server. What that means is that people who have accounts on the main Lemmy instance, Lemmy.ml, can find and join our community, so it's possible we may see some newbies come in. It also means that you can use your account here to join communities on Lemmy.ml.

I'm being very careful with this at first because I don't want to deal with a lot of spam. I reserve the right to turn it off if spam becomes a problem. But hopefully it won't, and I'll be able to deal with whatever comes along easily enough. Use that downvote and report button!

At first this is going to be clunky, because our server is still working on federating with theirs. So, if you were to look at a conversation over at Lemmy.ml right now, it would look like a ghost town. But that's just because our server is in the early phases of federating with them. As time goes on, it will become seamless.

Also, there's no good way for us to search for communities on Lemmy.ml right now, because we are in the early stages of federation and no one has joined those communities yet. The only way to do so right now is to go to https://lemmy.ml, click Communities at the top, and search or browse. You can then come back here to your account, click the magnifying glass symbol on the top, type into search:

    [email protected]

and you'll be able to join it. Again, at first it may seem like there are not a lot of posts, but this is because we are still in this early federation period.

This is also a good moment to plug !ws_server_announce[email protected], where I will normally post announcements such as these, and !ws_server_discussion[email protected], which is what it sounds like, a place to discuss anything involving the server and its administration. Please feel free to join both of those if that interests you.

Thanks again for being part of this experiment!

    Hello, World!

Welcome, everyone, to the Lemmy WetShaving Community.

With the API changes at Reddit, some in /r/WetShaving are considering migrating to other platforms. We presently have a growing Mastodon server at http://wetshaving.social, a Discord server, and an IRC channel. The hope is that Lemmy will become a useful addition to those other opportunities for this community to interact. However, that is ultimately up to the community, and if this isn't working we can try something else.

At the present time this entire thing is an alpha test. I am still working on server configuration. If you encounter any bugs, please message me so I can either figure out what is going wrong, or email our hosting service about it. We are presently one of the only beta testers of Lemmy hosting at knthost.com. They are presently providing us this for free in exchange for beta feedback, and when the beta period ends the cost will be about $10 a month.

Ultimately, once the alpha period is over, the hope is to have a conversation about how we can ensure sustainable self-governance for this community. But, at present, this is all about just getting things up and running and seeing if people want to continue to use this service. We also need to think about Federation, which is the only way for us to gain new members if Reddit implodes. Right now we are private and not Federated.

Things I will be working on in the near term is automating the daily SOTD and DQT posts, putting together the rules, etc. So please just play nice in the sandbox while those things are getting going.

Thanks for joining on this post-Reddit adventure, I'm looking forward to seeing where it brings us.
