/kbin Road to Release devlog series
  • I started web dev in 1999. It can be one of the most progressive branches of development. I’m using a completely different stack today than I was two years ago. Every day I use a whole suite of different tools and languages. It can be a lot of fun if you enjoy the whole process of learning new technologies.

  • How to watch Red Bull Formula Nurburgring festival in US?
  • That would be fantastic. Thank you!

  • Alpine break new ground with Reddit after 'first-of-its-kind' partnership unveiled
  • Good lord:

As part of their new partnership, Alpine and Reddit are launching a set of Collectible Avatars on the site, which users will be able to download and use on the platform.

  • This isn't new. It's just new to you.

  • Lando Norris; McLaren driver admits leaving team was 'in the back' of his mind before upturn in form
  • "Of course. I want to win races with McLaren. I want to win in papaya, I want to win championships."
    What's the papaya reference here?

  • Verstappen hit with Belgian GP grid penalty after F1 gearbox change
  • As someone that's newly enjoying F1, what's up with him and his team's dominance? I guess that's unusual?

  • Joe Manchin Is Attacking Democrats As If He’s a Republican
  • Democrats aren't your friends. They're just the better option between two conservative parties.

    Exactly.

  • USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness - Dennis Schubert
  • I’ve use a CalDigit TS3 Plus on my MacBook Pro for a couple of years, it’s pretty reliable. There is a lot of noise over the headphone port though, so I don’t use that.

  • Factorio upgraded with controller support - now in the stable release
  • I tried the demo on my deck and it leaves you stranded right at the beginning. It’s waiting for some input you can’t give.

  • Somebody has made an affordable, good quality wireless finger trackball - Review of Nulea m505/m505b
  • I have a Logitech Ergo M575 that's decent. It has the trackball under your thumb. I wonder if this configuration is better?

  • 70's strains from High Times
  • I didn’t start until the 80s, but it looked WAY better than any of this. Average bud was lower potency than the stuff we have today but it wasn’t bad and looked decent if a bit under trimmed. We got nice hydroponic buds when you wanted to pay for it and could find it. We also got cheap brown brick weed that looked better then this.

  • Finding the right gaming chair
  • I saved up for a bit and bought a Herman Miller Embody. Yes, it’s really expensive. But, it’s just effortless to sit in from morning at work all the way to late evenings with after work games. I love it so much. And after two years it has absolutely zero signs of wear except for some dust on the back. I’m very happy with the purchase.

  • Stoner engineering has its perils
  • Man, I spent so much time finding crazy ways to get high when I was in college—crazy bongs, hydroponics, lettuce hash, and even electronic hash smoking device I built from plans in High Times. I probably could have solved cold fusion if I would have directed my energy more appropriately.

  • Baldur's Gate 3: Release Teaser
  • I've been playing during the early access and it's pretty good. It was neat to see the progress they made with each patch. It's not like the other Baldur's Gate games though.

  • "Being overweight not linked to dying early, study says, but questions remain | CNN"
  • Key passage:
“The real message of this study is that overweight as defined by BMI is a poor indicator of mortality risk, and that BMI in general is a poor indicator of health risk and should be supplemented with information such as waist circumference, other measures of adiposity (fat), and weight trajectory,” said study first author Dr. Aayush Visaria, an internal medicine resident physician at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

  • Stupid Question, not an insult: Why is kbin written in PHP?
  • Mainly tooling and a few ill conceived React components that never really fit anywhere and are now polluting our new build process until we are able to rewrite them.

  • Stupid Question, not an insult: Why is kbin written in PHP?
  • Yep. People make bad decisions frequently. The rewrite was a way of keeping the newer devs on the project (like me) from revolting.

  • Stupid Question, not an insult: Why is kbin written in PHP?
  • I looked to contribute. But yea, no interest in learning PHP though.

  • Stupid Question, not an insult: Why is kbin written in PHP?
  • I’m currently involved in a rewrite! One of very few in 20 years of dev work. We prototyped our front end in node/js and we’re rewriting in React. We’re largely keeping the express backend, though.

If this community gets more traffic it might be nice to get a pipe tobacco swap thread going. I’d be up for starting a box pass too.

We used to have quite the thriving marketplace on Reddit before they shut it down.

    Stonehaven today.

I broke out the big guns today and opened a jar of Stonehaven. I hadn’t had any in a while and work has been tough so I splurged. I also broke out my birth year Dunhill to feel extra special. I dried it a bit, got it lit for a few puffs…and then had to take a call. I haven’t been able to pick it up again since.

I feel so “cock-blocked” right now.

Has anyone tried powercarving? I carved a pumpkin. I’ve gathered a decent setup over the years but I haven’t gotten too creative with it yet. It’s a nice change from cutting and sanding.
