4 DLL plugins don't load. Error code: 0000007E
  • Ah, well I didn't see this 4 days ago... did you figure it out? Since you're on linux, one thing to check is whether you've got case insensitive filesystem problems, e.g. one mod gives you "SKSE/Plugins" and another uses "skse/plugins" which gets quite likely the more you install. When there are two files with the same name like that, Skyrim is only going to find one of them.

I don't know if MO2 fixes that for you or not, I just install them with a shell script. If you're just starting out, probably better to make an ext4 case-sensitive filesystem for windows games with mods to use.

  • Man arrested with explosives near Paris airport was part of vast Russian sabotage campaign
  • If the best that a vast Russian sabotage campaign can do is to send idiots to try making TATP in a hotel room, they're worse off than I thought. The only advantage that stuff has is that it's very easy to make, but if you're in a position to need things to be that easy you're not in a position to control it well enough to avoid having it blow up in your hands. And aside from losing some fingers it's not really something you want to do in a hotel room where everyone's going to hear the loud bang and your screams of pain.

If it's any kind of campaign it's stochastic terrorism, I guess.

  • How to reliably(!) exclude files from a list in tar?
  • ...more fancy such as using tar -X, which works for me. I'd never actually tried it before. The 'weird globbing' it uses is regular expressions, which are worth learning how to use. Run grep "$expression" $_tmpfile where $expression is a line from your exclude file to see which files it's going to match and exclude.

  • How to reliably(!) exclude files from a list in tar?
  • I don't know what fd does, but at a guess maybe what you're missing is that tar includes all the files in directories you give it? So if you exclude 'foo/bar' but include 'foo' then foo/bar will be in your tar file.

What I do is basically tar cf `ls ~ | grep -v $files_to_exclude` but if you want to exclude something that isn't a top-level directory you'd need to get slightly more fancy.

  • Further searching turns up the information that "federated" Bluesky PDS instances are limited to ten user accounts each, and API usage limits which may constrain things further. So that would explain why there aren't any big ones.

So far as I can tell they do all still "federate" through the central server, not directly with each other. So there being not much point in it may also explain why it hasn't caught on.

Almost as bad as Threads, really.

  • Threads can now show replies from Mastodon and other fediverse apps
  • Well, what's a popular server? Are there several big ones? Sorry, but I really don't understand why the answer isn't turning up in web search results.

PS: Are you sure it isn't just people who've done the "set your domain as your handle" thing but even so are still on the central one? Because even if they have made some small progress towards decentralization they absolutely have not gone so far that there isn't still a central one.

  • Threads can now show replies from Mastodon and other fediverse apps
  • Is it really? Seems hard to find out. Anyone have a list of Bluesky servers other than the central one with open signups?

  • New German citizens required to affirm Israel's right to exist
  • Me? I'm not so anarchist that I personally have a problem with pledging allegiance to a flag or whatevs, just anarchist enough that I find it somewhat odd when people assume that everyone is part of "you" and "us" groups of that kind.

I guess it's just that having to acknowledge the sovereign powers of some country other than the one you're applying for citizenship in is unusual enough to make this sort of weird power to define our views of the world that the modern state has achieved stand out a little more than usual.

  • New German citizens required to affirm Israel's right to exist
  • The intention is good I suppose, but it seems unfair to those who don't believe that nation-states in general have rights that should require our affirmation, even while they have many powers we must respect. Are they also made to affirm the right of Germany to exist? They've made a rule which denies would-be citizens the right to espouse anarchism, which seems like a step in the direction of removing human rights.

As I got going I noticed that the room wasn't empty, and that I was standing right next to a table for two where a man and his wife were trying to eat dinner. "Excuse me sir, didn't see you there" I apologized. They looked unhappy. As I continued, everyone else in the restaurant turned to look at me. As if I was the one doing something weird.

how to fix Skyrim game balance, the complicated way

Here are some mods I can recommend that directly affect game balance, feel free to suggest more. For the most part I've listed only things that directly affect the basic variables in simple ways, not including survival mode stuff, combat overhauls, perk tree changes, the paraglider, and many other things that obviously do also affect game balance but aren't only about that.

*Skyrim Skill Uncapper for SE and AE - Adjust rate of level up for each skill individually. I like level-ups to be way slower than the base game, like 10 times slower, but with skills where tedious grinding is already the only way to train them left closer to normal but contributing less to character level advancement. Enjoy being level 1 for a meaningful amount of time.

*Armor Rating Overhaul - Makes early-game armour not completely useless. Getting some should be the priority it normally is in such games. The base game armor rating algorithm seems weirdly broken, any of this mod's options is better.

*Yet Another Difficulty Mod - Adjust damage dealt/damage taken, optionally changing it automatically as you advance. In my current game it's set to start with 1.0/2.0 at level 1 and smoothly progress to 0.5/5.0 at level 30 (compared to 0.25/3.0 for default legendary mode) and so far that seems good.

*Extra Encounters Reborn - Encounter more problems when wandering around the world.

*High Level Enemies - Make those you encounter more dangerous. Many of the people and animals who live only to murder passing strangers scale to higher levels than previously possible.

*NPC Regen Nerfed - Taking away their infinite magicka supply makes things a little easier.

*Simple No Health Regen - If you don't go full survival mode, maybe at least have no health regen.

*Smart NPC Potions - They might use two or three healing potions during a fight. Also they might poison you.

*Maxsu Combat Escape - When fights are actually difficult you might want to be able to run away without that stupid ogre continuing to be angry at you forever from the far side of a mountain.

*Simply Better Movement Speeds - My current choice of movement speed mod.

*Encounter Zones Unlocked - Probably helps if you're going to have a playthrough that goes on for a while.

Squardle is the best one. There's something of a learning curve. It looks intimidating at first. Once you get the hang of it though, it's just right.

It's given me a few minutes of word game entertainment every morning for the past year. I may not know much, but I know all the five-letter words now.

Why didn't anyone tell me that Papyrus Tweaks NG is mandatory once you have too many other mods?

Why didn't anyone tell me that Papyrus Tweaks NG is mandatory once you have too many other mods?

Too many being probably about four hundred in my case. Script lag was getting ridiculous and then it started locking up, and now suddenly with that one addition, it's smooth and solid again. With that I guess my personal version of Skyrim is pretty much done, or at least ready for play testing.

This bill passed second reading in the House of Commons. It is a serious threat. The age verification lobby is making its push, trying to bring this arrant nonsense to Canada before we and the rest of the world realise how little good and how much harm it can do.

    Enhancer for YouTube is gone

Yet another popular extension has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. It seems that its author might have requested its removal, but if so then even in that case the longstanding Mozilla policy of telling its users absolutely nothing about what happened applies.

It happened a month ago but it took me this long to notice since the feature I like best only recently stopped working. It's the sort of thing that requires periodic updates to keep up with changes to the youtube UI.

Does anyone know of another extension that can automatically resize the youtube player to fill the browser window? Or, for that matter, the invidious one?

I've spent most of my gaming time for the past year gradually applying more and more mods to Skyrim, and finally got around to trying Chanterelle last week.

It doesn't have much in the way of quests or npc dialogue, but everything it does have is top quality. Lots of wilderness to explore, a couple of dungeons to crawl. Somehow the landscapes feel more realistic than most of Skyrim. Recommended for those who enjoy walking around in the woods. There are many wonders to discover. Next new game I'm going to try starting there.

Adds support for the extended plugin (ESL) range introduced in game version 1.6.1130 to versions 1.5.97, 1.6.659, and anything in between.

    Backported Extended ESL Support

It allows older versions of Skyrim to handle files with the new plugin version number. Removes any temptation I might've had to install the update any time soon.

If you reverted to 1.6.640 for example and it was still crashing (as some reported) it's probably because they snuck a new .esl file in that you didn't notice, and this mod should fix that as well.

Even if we never get another Elder Scrolls game worthy of its legacy, Skyrim modding will continue.
