GammaOS version 1.5.1. has some real improvements over version 1.3.3. The ability to change performance modes with the touch-screen, rather than a button combination, being one of them. However, when playing higher-end consoles, there is a notable performance regression. In this video, that can be seen with both GameCube and PlayStation 2.
If you want to stick with consoles up to the PlayStation or Nintendo 64, the upgrade to version 1.5.1. is a no-brainer. For higher-end consoles, you may want to stick with version 1.3.3. and put up with a few inconveniences.
Performance mode was used in all tests. Dolphin 5.0-21395 was used for GameCube and NetherSX2 was used for PS2.
Have you experienced this performance regression?
I've also made a bug report over at https://github.com/TheGammaSqueeze/GammaOS/issues/169

Back in the days when it was first released, I'm sure I read that it should be pronounced "Susie". That's the way I've always said it.
It's debatable whether the Wii U should be considered to be part of "retro gaming". It's my most up-to-date console. Nevertheless, I think it's worth getting this info out there.
I would suggest that it's easier to download carts from https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?cat=7&sub=2
https://onionui.github.io/docs/emulators/pico-8 says pretty much everything else I would say. It's also worth noting that you can rename .p8
files to .png
and they'll work the same. The advantage is that the .png
file also functions as cover-art.
The default configuration of OnionOS uses the fake08
core for PIC0-8 games. Its compatibility is good but not perfect. I believe it's possible to set-up the paid-for, official PICO-8 runtime, but I've never done it so I have no notes.
I agree. It is absolutely crazy to think that the Miyoo Mini can handle the DS. In other good news, with ArkOS installed, your RG351V can also play DS games; other custom firmwares may also be able to do so but I haven't tried with them.
I've spoken to Miyoo about this device. They say that it will be released in November and will be available both from AliExpress and third-party retailers (IOW, you'll find it on Amazon). I asked for specifications but none were forthcoming.
Miyoo have a long history of being optimistic with release dates so take "November" with a pinch of salt.
Well, I think you would be fine going blind as...
Sounds as if it may be worth giving a try sometime.
I do both, usually I re play old classics when I don’t want to think too much or I only have too little time to play to not being able to process stuff 😅
Have you also had been able to play some games that you always wanted to as a child, but couldn't, for whatever reason?
I hear a lot said about the Dragon Ball games, but I've never actually played one myself. Would someone unfamiliar with the mangas get a lot out of them?
I'm always curious about how people use their retro-gaming devices. Do you stick with games from your past, or have you found some previously unknown gems? For instance, I love the fact that I can replay the Metroid games, up to Fusion on the GBA, but I've also discovered that I thoroughly enjoy 1942 (Arcade) and its sequels.
It's amazing to be able to carry around a huge catalogue of retro games in such a convenient form-factor.
What are you playing while on your trip?
It's interesting to hear that the GammaOS developer has got his hands on one.
Koriki or Batocera but, yes, it won't run on GarlicOS until there's a release with GPU support.
I was disappointed to see the Koriki PS1 performance. Curious that it can play (some) N64 but has issues with most PS1 games.
It's interesting that they've added the active cooling here. Presumably, the metal shell of the RG405M provided enough of a heat-sink on its own. It also means that GammaOS will require additional porting work - I'd been hoping it would work out of the box.
Great questions, HexagonSun.
Arcade
There are a few things to check here.
- Your ROMs should be in the
Roms\ARCADE
folder on the SD card - the ROMs should be in the
.zip
file format - the file
Emu\ARCADE\config.json
should look like the following:
{
"label": "Arcade",
"icon": "/mnt/SDCARD/Icons/Default/arcade.png",
"launch": "launch.sh",
"rompath": "../../Roms/ARCADE",
"imgpath": "../../Roms/ARCADE/Imgs",
"gamelist": "../../Roms/ARCADE/miyoogamelist.xml",
"useswap": 1,
"shortname": 1,
"hidebios": 1,
"extlist": "zip"
}
- there should be a file in the
ARCADE
folder calledmiyoogamelist.xml
; this should contain XML entries for every ROM in the folder; the file names in this file should match the ROM files in theARCADE
folder (such asoutrun.zip
).
Cores
Most of the time, it's better to stick with the default core, but there are a couple of options for choosing a different one.
- Enable the Expert tab (
Apps -> Tweaks -> User Interface -> Show expert mode
): withGenesis Plus
installed, Mega Drive/Genesis games will show up in theExpert
section as playable with that core - use
Game List Options
(GLO): in the standard game list, bring up GLO by pressingY
, and choose a different core; this will only affect the highlighted game and is useful when there are a few games that don't perform as well with the default core.
Did you buy the BetterButtons or 3D print them?
I've been playing PICO-8 games just recently. Mostly for the purposes of testing compatibility.
Compatibility and performance are good but not perfect. Many of the games are so much fun.
Pictured is Bap the Ball Dragon. Real Mario Bros. vibes.
Do you know what caused the corruption to your retroarch.cfg
? It may be useful information for people who experience the same behaviour and stumble on your post.
Glad to hear you got it sorted and that it was just software.
Now would be a good opportunity to make a backup of the GarlicOS card you just made. See our guide if you need some tips.
The RG351M really does feel like a premium version of the RG351P. Very robust and great for GBA games.
Do you have custom firmware installed?
That's a great tip. Thank you for sharing!
I haven't used wefwef myself but, hopefully, someone will stumble upon this thread who can advise.
That's not one I predicted. If we find consensus around this pronunciation, I'll eat my........ lunch.
