Many external communities are stuck on "Subscribe Pending"
  • I’m repeating myself cos I said this in another thread but the pending subscriptions should still be showing posts in your feed when you select subscribed at the top, at least they do for me and someone else confirmed it was the case for them too. The pending is a visual glitch - I think.

  • Little June Beetle I found in the bath yesterday evening

These dopey summer chafers are in decline so I’m happy to have seen one! I thought it was dead at first but it’s probably only just emerged so especially clumsy. Hopefully it’ll find a mate and it didn’t get eaten straight after I took it outside.

  • Thank you for making this post. I saw it happen and found it very concerning. I didn't feel capable to address it myself so I am very glad someone else has raised the issue. I would like to hope that the vast majority (should be everyone but evidently not with what's happened) of our instance will be in agreeance that transphobia is absolutely not something we want to be associated with here. @[email protected] Please deal with this.

  • I’m truly sorry you’ve had this experience here. I saw your post and I saw how quickly it got locked. I also saw how you handled the situation in the other thread where they debated with you back and forth. I won’t pretend to be hugely knowledgable regarding the issues that the trans community face and that is on me, I need to educate myself. I just want to add that I think Tom may be on holiday at present and it might be that he isn’t sure how to respond to you. However, that’s not an excuse and I do think that the community should have been locked down at the very least. It’s unfortunate timing that an instance was created, it’s grown extremely quickly in numbers, and the lead admin is not able to give full attention to pressing issues like this. I hope a resolution can be reached soon.

  • Several communities I tried to join are stuck on "SUBSCRIBE PENDING" after 2+ days. Any thoughts?
  • As far as I know, it's a visual glitch and you are actually subscribed. Posts made to these communities should still be showing up in your main feed when you select 'subscribed' - At least that was the case for me with my pending ones.

  • Second home communities
  • I don't know how to do it, but there is a way to lock your community to 'mod-only'. This stops posts being created which is probably for the best if you don't intend to be here at all to oversee anything. As I understand it, Lemmy is currently at huge risk of an influx of bot accounts / it's already happening. Tom has added email verification to register with our instance but anyone on the whole Fediverse can still come here and post / comment whatever they want. If things start getting posted to your community and you aren't here to deal with it, is Tom supposed to do it for you? Definitely best to lock it imo :)

    The Wednesday Whinge
  • I don't always mind the smell depending on what they're smoking as I guess strains smell different but sometimes it's rank and when it's a few days in a row I start to feel a bit icky. My back is starting to improve slowly, thank you :)

  • The Wednesday Whinge
  • In the end I made an account on both instances too, but mainly because they don't seem to be federating very well. When I view lemmy.world communities from my feddit account stuff is missing and vice versa. So I use my feddit account just for here and my lemmy.world account for all the other crap I wanna follow across the fediverse lol.

  • 📷 A few pictures from a stretch of the Oxford Canal
  • It's really nice to hear that you found an appreciation for the changing nature even if it isn't usually something that's on your radar. I wonder where along the canal route you are compared to me!? I kept it vague with Cherwell District because you know, this is the internet. Lol.

  • Second home communities
  • Agree. What use is it to make a community and then leave with no intention of moderating it and leaving open to who knows what. Potentially creating a lot of strife for Tom if something goes wrong. You're only as strong as your weakest link, and all that. It's 100% the mindset of "I don't actually care about this community that I've chosen to make but I didn't want anybody else to make it. If you're lucky I'll come back one day". Eye roll.

  • [IMPORTANT] We need to apply the 'Undetermined' language option
  • I'm not sure. Sometimes, even if you post a comment without specifically selecting English beforehand, Lemmy autodetects it and puts English. To be honest with you I haven't managed to get my head around it. The language settings all seem very convoluted to me.

  • The Wednesday Whinge
  • I definitely advocate for moving somewhere else if you’re in a position to. We spend so much of our lives at work just to be able to exist and one day look back and think…wow I spent so long being stressed / unhappy. I know not everyone has the luxury of being able to leave a job if they aren’t happy - been there myself, but if you can, go for it.

  • The Wednesday Whinge
  • Aye, you gotta roll with the punches, right? Yeah I felt it was a shame that UKcasual was already made on lemmy.world rather than feddit.uk, so things are quite spread out / there's crossover. That's the nature of the Fediverse though! As I understand it from a comment I saw a while ago UKcasual already had 1k subscribers quite quickly so they didn't want to lose that by deleting the community to move it here.

  • The Wednesday Whinge
  • I slipped a disc in my spine a couple of weeks ago and my mobility is still limited and the pain is still bad. Our downstairs neighbour doesn't seem to understand the concept of doorstops and instead he just slams his doors all day over and over again, maybe he's pissed off at me because I stomped on the floor when he was playing loud music at midnight. On top of that there's the bloke next door who has one of the most vile sounding smokers coughs I've ever heard, gets up for work at 4am and sounds like he's wretching, lovely to be woken up by that. Plus the whole building constantly stinks of weed from another downstairs neighbour. Oh and we're on the top floor so it's been a million degrees. Urgh I can't wait to not live in a block of flats anymore...but oh wait mortgage rates are fucked so no house for us yet - if ever. This thread is a good idea, thank you. I was able to talk about happy and positive things in this thread, and then come here and have a good moan.

  • 📷 A few pictures from a stretch of the Oxford Canal
  • It really is. I moved here from a rural town in the Derbyshire Dales - population less than 4k. Where I currently live the town is much larger and so busy, almost 55k and surrounded by industry and the M40. I go on the canal to escape and feel like I'm back in nature again.

  • PCOS @lemmy.ca juniper @feddit.uk

    Experiences with Inositol?

I thought I would post here to ask if anyone has tried inositol powder or tablets to help with PCOS related symptoms?

1 teaspoon of myo-inositol powder - dissolved in water - taken each morning seems to have completely obliterated my intense cravings / constant want to eat. It appeared to take effect the very same day that I started it. Initially I had some stomach upset, usually within 15 minutes of drinking it on an empty stomach. A week later this has settled down. I drink it slowly and have a breakfast such as porridge soon after. The real test will come after I next ovulate - whenever that is. If I still don’t experience any cravings then, I will be truly amazed.

I have also experienced a slight increase in headaches but this could also be due to dehydration. My biggest concern at the moment is hair shedding. I do lose a fair amount of hair but I feel like it may have increased. I can’t be sure if this is linked to the inositol or not but for now I will continue with 1 teaspoon daily and see how it goes.

    Stuttgart 2023 Final - Tiafoe d. Struff 4-6 • 7-6 • 7-6

Frances Tiafoe will now reach world ranking #10 after winning the Stuttgart Open - His first ever grass court final. It was a great match to watch, brilliant shots from both players. The crowd was really behind Struff, obviously. The championship point was fantastic.

📷 A few pictures from a stretch of the Oxford Canal

I went for a little walk on a stretch of the Oxford Canal in the Cherwell District area today, so I thought I would share a few pictures that I took. It was very peaceful. It makes my day when friendly boaters say hello when passing by.

I don't have a fancy camera or anything but I still like taking some pictures while I'm out. :)

Do you follow any other grass tournaments in the lead up to Wimbledon?

I'm just watching some coverage of Stuttgart and it made me wonder what tournaments everyone else likes to watch. In the past I have only watched Wimbledon but as I've gotten older I enjoy watching a variety of tournaments and slams.

Looking forward to Tsitsipas - Gasquet later!

I have to laugh at myself. When I was a kid I would get annoyed at my mum wanting to watch Wimbledon because it meant missing The Simpsons for two weeks (lol). Now I watch more tennis than she does!

We need to apply the 'Undetermined' language option

UPDATE: Tom has now added the Undetermined language option to our instance. To make sure you can see the majority of Lemmy content from within your feddit.uk account, do the following:

Click your profile name - click settings - scroll down to the Languages box (not interface language) - hold down Ctrl (cmd on Mac) and select both English and Undetermined. On mobile browser: Tap the Languages box and make sure both are selected - scroll down and click save

You can also select any other languages which are beneficial to you.

If you don't see everything listed in the box, try refreshing the page.

    --

    Original Post

When viewing profile settings, you will see a box which says: >Warning: If you deselect Undetermined, you will not see most content.

On feddit.uk we currently have no selectable language option other than English. This means that (sometimes?) we will not see a lot of posts / comments on other instances / communities where the OP did not specifically select English before posting

See also: This Lemmy documentation under 'Setting up your profile' >• Languages: Select the languages that you speak to see only content in these languages. This is a new feature and many posts don't specify a language yet, so be sure to select "Undetermined" to see them.

Ideally, we need the ability to select English (or whatever language) AND undetermined - you can select multiple, as long as they are available.

When I view X community@instance from my lemmy.world account (with Undetermined language selected in profile settings), I can see all posts and comments. When I view the same community@instance from my feddit.uk account, there are missing posts and often 0 comments on everything. This needs addressing if possible!

My spider plant gave me flowers this year!

I think there's probably been about 10 flowers in total. It's a shame they don't stay for longer but it's been lovely to see them!
