Queensland Government promises to build yet another (probably tolled) fucking car tunnel.
  • @Pistcow not confirmed that this will be tolled, but it's going to start from the end of one existing toll road which, yes, was built by a mix of public & private funds and is now privately-owned and tolled. I expect this will be the same.

But my objection is *primarily* about the fact that it's being built at all, rather than about who's paying for it, per se. Even if both are bad.

  • @brisbane this announcement comes right in the middle of widening Gympie into an 8-lane monstrosity through this section. It needs a *serious* road diet. One 24/7 bus lane in each direction, a bike lane in each direction, and it would *still* be a 4 lane major road. But instead, we get peak-hour-only bus lanes and you can navigate some winding back streets (give way every time you cross *any* road!) if you wanna cycle to Chermside.

Fuck this makes me \\so\\ angry. We KNOW this doesn't work. You want to solve congestion, road diet the existing roads. Build good bike infrastructure. Build good public transport. How does this happen with a single off-the-cuff announcement when \months\ of back-and-forth debate over public transport network with the NWTC went \nowhere\.

    Foggy Brisbane last Thursday night!
  • @brisbane I couldn't figure out how to get them to post directly from Pixelfed to Lemmy how I wanted, unfortunately, so I'm posting a link to that from here.

And it also doesn't seem that my double x-post to pics worked. 🤷‍♂️

  • UQ's Camp Solidarity still going strong. The pro-genociders seem to have given up though.

The longest-running scientific experiment, the Pitch Drop at the University of Queensland, Brisbane
  • @Spitzspot yeah I dunno why exactly the Pitch Drop experiment gets the label "longest continually-running experiment". Probably some kind of technicality about what exactly counts as "experiment" and "continually-running". There are some even older than Beal's listed on Wikipedia, depending on how you define it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-term_experiment

UQ students standing in solidarity with Palestine
  • @ziltoid101 went for another walk past it this evening at UQ. It's still there. One of the marquees was donated by the federal MP of the area (Greens party).

There's also a pro-Israel camp over the far side of the Great Court. I'd estimate it's about half the size.

UQ students standing in solidarity with Palestine

UQ has a very strong relationship with US weapons manufacturer Boeing. Students are protesting this relationship, as well as showing general support for Palestinians, by staging a camp-in on campus.

Some photos I took of the camp as I walked past them this morning.

edit: 2nd & 3rd images linked for Lemmy:

A clever solution to BCC's cowardice
  • Additional image.

I had heard about the ghost bikes being repeatedly removed, but I rarely travel Nudgee Rd myself. Happened to drive down it last night and spotted this ingenuous solution to the problem. Had to stop and capture it.

edit: hmm, looks like Lemmy can't show images attached to replies. Shouldn't be too much of a surprise I guess. See it in reply.

  • A clever solution to BCC's cowardice

A clever solution to BCC's cowardice

BCC has been repeatedly removing ghost bikes from a site on Nudgee Rd after a cyclist died at the location last year, despite years of warning from cycling advocates that improved infrastructure was needed in the area. To stop them from removing the ghost bikes, highlighting the blood on BCC's hands, \and\ highlighting the absurdity of how storing private property on public land is completely ok if it's a car, someone installed this ghost trailer. @brisbane

  • @brisbot much better this morning. Woke up early and managed to get myself outside for a quick half River Loop ride. Always feel good after doing morning exercise, as hard as it is to get up to actually do it.

  • @brisbot Urgh mornings suck. Usually I blame it on my tendency to go to bed late, but last night I was in bed early and set an alarm early to get up for some exercise. Morning arrives and I immediately re-set my alarm and go back to sleep until I have to be up for work.

  • @brisbot how exactly does Mastodon–Lemmy interaction work? This is a comment reply because I searched for it, but is there an equivalent to subscribing to a Lemmy community? A way to post in a community?
