Who here is still on X, formerly Twitter?

Pretty much the title. If you are, why do you remain on a platform that has become such a dumpster-fire of mis- and dis-information?

Many of today’s unhealthy foods were brought to you by Big Tobacco

A new study suggests that tobacco companies, who were skilled at marketing cigarettes, used similar strategies to hook people on processed foods. (adding archive link here: https://archive.ph/cRRVa)

  • Dudes look like they just got back from the crusades.

  • What are you reading this week? [7/23/23]
  • The Beekeeper of Aleppo , a 2019 novel by Christy Lefteri. It deals with the plight of refugees from Aleppo in Syria to Europe during the Syrian Civil War. While a work of fiction, it is based on the author's experience over two summers volunteering in Athens at a refugee center.

  • There are more than cultural differences. WeChat is a surveillance app for the masses by the State. This is not an exaggeration.

  • Fedora or Pop!_OS?
  • I have used many Linux distros, Old-school RedHat (floppy days) Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, etc. I used to like messing around with the kernel and configs, etc. Now I just want something that works so that I can get to work. I installed Pop_OS on an old Microsoft Surface about 3 weeks ago and I have been very impressed. It was simple to install, has a pleasing interface design, and no bloat software. I'm going to keep using it for my desktop and highly recommend it.

So where are we all supposed to go now?
  • I'm on discord but not for the sociability so much. However, there are some hyper specific subjects that get served up there. Personally, I find it very chaotic.

  • I don't think he called bullshit as much as he thought it has potential but not ready yet. Lol! I love the fediverse. Let everyone else find the next best thing that will, once again, get ruined.

  • Will Pop_OS run OK on an old Surface Pro
  • Thanks! I didn't consider putting a hold on the kernel. That is a great tip!

  • How many of you are still working full-time remote and how is it going? If not, why not? Was the decision made by you to go back to the office or did your employer decide for you?
  • In a large metropolitan area in the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA. The city itself has a decent bike program but not the wider area

  • I'm with @kestel7, that sounds really shitty. I hope things get better for you. Even if you get another remote job maybe you can make enough to go to a shared workspace.

  • How many people here have taken the refuge vows? Why or why not?

Just curious. I refer to myself as Buddhist-ish. I read some dharma at least weekly if not daily, struggle thru weekly seated meditation, and recite the Loving Kindness meditation daily. But I don't have a Sangha near me and likely wouldn't join one even if there was one available.

I am still working full-time remote. There are definitely some social aspects of going to the office I miss, but I really don't miss the commute or the shitty office politics. Overall I feel I am still more productive from home and happier overall.

How are you getting the links to stories in the title?

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but it pretty much says it all in the title. I've read a few guides but they don't seem to answer my questions about posting. I quit Facebook and Twitter over 10 years ago and this is my first social media account since then.
