Train Rule
  • That sucks. That's why I think we should build more bus stops instead of millions of acres of parking lots and forcing everyone to spend thousands of dollars a year to own and operate their own personal heavy machinery.

  • Train Rule
  • This description of self-driving cars sounds like taxis, but less resource efficient, more error prone, and exclusive to those who can afford to own one.

Additionally, trams/streetcars have been solving the last mile problem since the 1800s. Sure, you run the risk of needing to walk 5 minutes instead of being driven straight to your destination, but I really don't see how that justifies paving over millions of acres of land merely to have a convenient place to stick our cars.

  • "The US is Ugly. THIS is Why." (hint: it's car-centric development)

Bad land use will be the death of us
  • I own a Condo and am within a 15 minute walk of 90% of the things I care about.

For the remaining 10%, I can access 90% of that by train or bike.

For that last 1%, one of the things within my 15 minute walking radius is a car rental spot.

100% of my transportation needs are met, and I save probably 10k a year by not needing to give a shit about parking, gas, insurance, or car payments and traffic is something I never have to think about.

Genuinely, if I were completely dependent on my car to get around, I feel like I would be paying a small fortune to give up a massive amount of freedom and mobility.

I get the appeal of having a house and a yard, but I don't think I'd ever be able to accept the trade-off of feeling so far from the places I love.
