Is numlock key actually useful?
  • I've set my computer so that holding caps lock lets me type in Greek

  • Lemmy.ml is blocking all requests from /kbin Instances
  • I don't know wtf "real communism" is, all I know is that the communism I advocate for is not that of Lenin, Stalin, or Mao

  • Looking for a spaceship/sci fi game to play. Any thoughts?
  • That would be weird for Outer Wilds. It's not really a game about figuring out a complex sequence of events that let you get the correct solution to the time loop, the way so many time loop stories are. There are a couple locations that can only be accessed early or late, but those locations only contain information; once you've reached them you have no need to go back on subsequent looks.

And since the game is about exploration, it doesn't really feel repetitive (at least it didn't to me), because you're always looking for something new

  • Remove one letter from the title of a video game; what is the plot now?
  • Meta Gear Solid -- a game about the metal gear series

  • On federation and fragmentation
  • Putting all the various "gaming" communities on kbin and Lemmy together on one page is a nice QOL feature but I'm not sure it's a good idea to present them to users as all the same thing. Gaming@kbin and gaming@lemmy and gaming@beehaw are different groups with different rules managed by different people and if users don't know that it's going to cause confusion in the long run

  • LemmyNSFW annouced that they would allow loli/shota and people on other instances did not react positively
  • As I understand it he starts out just living with them but then kidnaps the girl after the mother dies

  • We should defederate from lemmynsfw
  • They also don't have sex in that play. It's a romance, not erotica

  • Does kbin have any equivalent to multireddits? If not, I think that should be added to the eventual TODO list.
  • Honestly I think the choice to, in order to be more like Reddit, have subreddit equivalents tied to specific instances is in tension with federation. Trying to give each instance it's own host of micro communities instead of having each instance being a community that engages with other instances on cross-platform threads is going to give us headaches. Eventually someone is going to ask for individual magazines to federated.

That's not too say there aren't problems with that approach; in particular, moderation becomes more complicated. But just that we're trying to fit a square peg in a... squircular hole.

  • Will Reddit Accounts Go Up In Value?
  • Ah established Reddit account with real comments and lots of karma is less likely to be identified as a bot or sockpuppet, which is useful for people who want to run those accounts

  • i approve of this message
  • I'll take "statements that aged poorly" for $600, Alex

  • What retro games should everyone play?
  • MYST, and if you enjoyed that, Riven and Myst 3

  • Indie vs AAA games
  • I almost always prefer a quirky game that does its own thing to a bland game with mass market appeal. Most AAA studios, especially as game budgets have exploded, are afraid to experiment with their gameplay or do anything new. Nintendo is probably the largest exception to this rule, but it comes with the caveat that they generally don't release new entries unless they come up with something new, which is sad for, like, Star Fox and F-Zero fans. But ultimately the more a game costs the less room there is for the sort of risk that makes for the truly special games

  • One of Steam’s best strategy games is free right now
  • Some of them are. IMO the best are Way of Life, Holy Fury, Conclave, and Old Gods. If you want to play some who isn't a Christian King, such as a Christian merchant or pagan/hindu/muslim king, you'll need to get the expansion for that. Respectively, those are The Republic, The Old Gods or Holy Fury (either will unlock Pagans), Rajas of India, and Sword of Islam. That being said, if you like playing a Christian, Sons of Abraham is worth picking up. Finally, if you're the type of person who really likes optimizing these sort of games, then you'll probably want Legacy of Rome, which adds retinues, customizable standing armies that let a skilled player solve the combat system to punch way above their weight

  • One of Steam’s best strategy games is free right now
  • honestly i think having been in on the ground floor makes things easier. its way easier to learn the changes to mechanics you already understand than it is to learn mechanics that were designed to be, in almost all cases for Stellaris, more complicated than the original, already complicated mechanics.

  • One of Steam’s best strategy games is free right now
  • Paradox put a lot of effort into making Ck3 more accessible, and I think largely succeeded. of course its still a massively complicated game, but strategy fans are generally willing to put up with that. its being obtuse and impenetrable and confusing that's the problem

  • Describe a game in 5 words or less, and see if anyone can guess it.
  • 3/4 but i can see why you went with universe sandbox; paring it down to 5 words was tough

  • Describe a game in 5 words or less, and see if anyone can guess it.
  • Fight on both screens simultaneously

  • +1 for azgaar's.

A cool tip for generating more detailed continents with it is to generate several maps of smaller regions, stitch them together in your Photoshop clone of choice, then import the result back into azgaar's. You can get a much more detailed map that way than you could easily generate otherwise, and as a bonus you can have broad control over the shape of landmass!

Here's a map I made as an example
