Is this discoloration a problem?
  • We had the roof replaced two years ago. I believe they redid all the flashing at that point. So there's a chance this could be old? If the leak is resolved, which I'll verify, do we have to do anything to the wood or are we good?

    Is this discoloration a problem?

Renovating the bathroom and found these dark patches in the joists and roof lumber surrounding the old vent pipe. The PVC part is new.

Anything bad here? Anything we need to address?

    Heat damage or something else?
  • Oh interesting. I thought electrical tape was the only thing. I also like to do "code plus." I'll get some friction tape.

Yeah once the micro is plugged in this never gets touched. And it's on its own circuit.

  • Heat damage or something else?
  • I am lucky. I had no idea this was going on back here. Here's the back of the scorched cabinet.

And here is my new cap job.

I'm going to cover it with a plate and cut a hole in the melamine just as you suggested.

The blue box is one of those kind that is supposed to latch into the drywall, but the melamine is cut too tight for that to have ever worked so it's just busted out when I pulled on cabinet.

    Heat damage or something else?

I'm cleaning this cabinet above the range/micro and noticed this mark on the back. I mostly keep cooking oils, vinegars, etc in here. Does this look serious?

Update: well it ain't pretty, but it shouldn't burn the house down. For anyone concerned, my electrician approves. Thank you all for your help today.

HR Monitor Cuts Me In Half
  • I had an older model watch that required a chest strap before that. I think it was my old Pebble. The way I tested was I wore the two watches at the same time and pulled the chest strap data from the older watch and compared it to the wrist monitor data from the new one. I couldn't see any meaningful difference over about a week of running, so I happily gave up the chest strap.

  • HR Monitor Cuts Me In Half
  • When I got my first wrist monitor I wore both for a few days and didn't see a significant difference. Unless you're running professionally it should be good enough accuracy. And boy do I never miss the chest strap.

  • The racing season is over for me and now I'll spend the rest of the year building up miles as I try to hit my goal distance for the 2023. I'm trying not to lose any of the gains from this year by maintaining two speed workouts per week while also increasing mileage. The objective is to avoid injury by doing shorter speed working and slowing way down on the easy miles.

    Any recommendations for joint compound?

I need a small amount of joint compound for random drywall repairs. Is there any real difference between different brands? Do any of them last longer than others after they have been opened? Any other considerations with knowing? Since I don't need a lot I don't mind spending a few extra bucks, but I'd like to know if it's actually worth it.

Anyone who tried going without diapers during sleep from the first day of potty training, would you recommend it?

When our first child learned to use the potty we used diapers during naps and overnight. The nap diapers faded after a month or so, but the overnight diapers took like a year. What's worse is that he started pooping only when he had the diaper on, usually in the morning before getting out of bed. This was... not ideal.

I imagine that if we just ditch the diapers entirely then we would have a few days of wetting the bed, but maybe that's worth it? Or does it become a persistent problem? Or does bed wetting at this stage create unexpected problems? Any experience or advice would be great!
