TIL Costa Rica has had no military since 1949
  • I don't believe this claim to be true. If you insist that it really is true, could you please point to the exact place in the US constitution that prohibits a permanent standing army?

  • Beyond enshittification, why does tech oftentimes suck?
  • Why is it so pervasive? And why does some of it seem to be ignored for literal years?

    Considering that you know that these problems have not yet been fixed, you must still be using these products despite these problems not yet being fixed and there's your answer: What would the motivation be to fix problems that aren't severe enough to make you stop using the product?

  • Comenting code
  • Doesn't need any comment:

    int getCount() { return count; }

    Absolutely needs a very extensive comment:

    double getBojangleFlux { return fubar * .42; }

  • [OC] Lund, Sweden
  • Fantastic argument! 🤣

    On the other hand, I've worked together with a lot of IIT guys and there was definitely nothing wrong with their technical education.

  • [OC] Lund, Sweden
  • On a side note, "Lund" means "penis" in many Indian languages.

    David Batra, comedian from Lund with an Indian father, has ensured that the people of Lund are well aware of this. 😉

  • Clever guy
  • It had a wonderfully bizarre name: fsn

  • Which are lesser-known movies that are well worth seeing?

  • Which are lesser-known movies that are well worth seeing?
  • The question was about "lesser-known movies", but Wong Kar-Wai and his movies are (for obvious reasons) very well-known.

  • Smart TVs take snapshots of what you watch multiple times per second
  • Okay. So how do we turn it off!?

    This is probably not the reply you want, but as someone who (in the past 40+ years) has never owned a TV, I simply can't refrain from asking: Have you considered simply not owning a TV?

  • NIST proposes barring some of the most nonsensical password rules
  • Please ban all the stupid password rules.

    Yes.

    I would rather just get hacked […]

    Eh, no.

  • People still working in IT, thoughts on IPv6?
  • Both my employer and my home ISP use IPv6 since many years now and so does all my own stuff, it's wonderfully convenient to have a globally unique address for everything that I connect to the network.

  • What is your favourite open source software that you discovered in the past year, that you can no longer live without?
  • Bitwarden / Vaultwarden, no other password manager I've tried before has really worked for me.

  • Does Amazon really think anyone out there wants a PC with AI bloatware on it?
  • It seems unlikely to me that Amazon doesn't have very good data on whether their marketing works in their favour or not.

    Fire kongeørnangrep på fem dager: – Helt abnorm adferd, ifølge ornitolog
