I'm just another nerd.

I'm a computer enthusiast. I love retro gaming, retro hardware and specially old thinkpads. I also love using/creating & contributing to FOSS. I'm a Linux fanboy aswell. Also a proud user of Fedora Kinoite.

What's Beehaw's opinion on Facebook doing NDAed meetings with fedi admins/devs?

So, recently some fediverse admins (mostly Mastodon) and the founder of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko (Gargron), where contacted by Meta/Facebook for an NDA meeting. We know nothing about it, but we're pretty sure that it was about this project92 thing that Meta/Facebook is creating to "compete" with Twitter.

So a lot of Mastodon admins already singed a pact to immediately block any Meta/Facebook activity in the fediverse as soon as it comes up. My Mastodon instance, fosstodon.org hasn't singed that pact and I'm pretty worried.

The following image is an screenshot of Gargron and dansup (creator of Pixelfed) talking about this. These posts were deleted, even from the wayback machine.

Megathread for Reddit Blackouts and News - Day 3
  • Man that prayer was fkng funny xD, specially mentioning Torvalds and Stallman is a gigachad move

  • The fight for our privacy and freedom in the free and open source movement
  • That's awesome dude, that's another benefit of FOSS, we can learn and enyoy technology way more. Also thank you for reading!

  • new Beehaw community icons!
  • That's a good idea, but I think having a single great logo is better for our identity

  • Whats a game that everybody seems to love that you cant stand for one reason or another?
  • This will be an extremely hot take for some: Almost all recent online games are complete garbage that solely exist to make profit and create addicted user bases and they hurt what videogames truly are, a revolutionary and interactive form of art.

  • The best open-source games you know
  • 0.A.D., Veloren and Xonotic are my favorites. Also Sonic Robo Blast 2 is freaking awesome

  • new Beehaw community icons!
  • I love the new icons, now they fit perfectly with the instance. I think that we also need a new logo, maybe a more minimalistic one (while still having the cowboy bee).

  • What are y'all's all time favourite game OSTs?
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has an amazing OST

  • so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?
  • It's the closet thing there is to Discord while being open source. It's not federated though and it still doesn't support E2EE at the moment. If you want to give it a try, visit https://app.revolt.chat

  • Any recommendations for low-end, Linux-friendly games to play?
  • Dark Souls Remastered should run just fine, one of the greatest games ever. Also make sure you play it with a controller!

  • The Reddit blackout has started for /r/joplinapp
  • Yeah, the blackout for subs like these is a bad thing for us users. This type of sub is a very valuable asset for everyone, since a lot of technical support on many things, we can only find it in these subs.

  • The Reddit blackout has started for /r/joplinapp
  • I don't really know why they don't make this a permanent blackout, or at least an amount of days enough to make Reddit lose a significant amount of money.

  • so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?
  • They are already shitting on their users, recently they disabled permanent invite links for non-comminuty servers, if you want to get permanent invite links, you need to make your server a community, which I think it will make it public (not sure). In the other hand, Discord is still a giant cesspool of malware.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • Copied from a response I made to someone else: If you think about it like Email, it's exactly the same. Why we have multiple instances? Well why does the United States has multiple states with different laws and governments? That's what federation is about. That is a big part of the freedom that the fediverse gives us to users and admins.

  • Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?
  • Lemmites is the best one

  • What distro(s) do you use?
  • I use Fedora Kionite. I was using Silverblue previously but Plasma 5.27 got me. I also tend to switch to Arch sometimes to play with tiling window managers.

  • so, which Big Tech company do you think is going to shit the bed next and popularize its Fediverse/FOSS equivalent in the process?
  • Revolt is it's own thing, it's not Matrix. You just create an account at https://app.revolt.chat and start using it, just like Discord. With Matrix you can do the same at app.element.io, you don't need to host your own server, even though that is possible.
