What IDE (Code Editors) do you use for programming?
  • I want to like vscode, and the vim bindings make me feel at home. I just don't like it though, I find it so slow for a text editor, and the intellisense seems to be very hit and miss as to whether it's going to work.

Every few months I open up vscode and give it a try, then go back to vim.

  • Where's the first and the oldest Lemmy instance?
  • Yes, the rest of the world got the extra security restrictions in order to fly. I'm in Europe and we generally have better, faster rail networks than the US (and everything is closer together) so we don't fly as much as Americans.

I used to work in the US about 10 years ago, and the contrast between that and when I visited in the 1990s to go to Graceland is pretty stark. It takes forever now to get through those TSA queues and immigration. You could also smoke on the transatlantic flight in the 90s!

  • To fellow penguins, What is your distro?
  • Debian on servers, Ubuntu on desktop. I've used Linux exclusively since about 1998 and I used to really enjoying dicking about with it and trying other distros but now I just want things to work with the minimum messing about.

  • What screams "poorly educated"?
  • I mean, you can sum it up in a sentence. Is it really that complex?

"People with poor knowledge, experience or skill in an area tend to overestimate their ability in that area."

Is your beef that people tend to conflate lack of skill or knowledge with low intelligence, which is not what the DK effect says?

  • r/The_Donald now on Lemmy (edit: not anymore)
  • it's really easy, I spun up my own instance in a morning. Ok, I am a sysadmin and programmer, but it really wasn't very difficult and didn't require much beyond creating a VPS and DNS entry along with basic abilities at the command line to use the ansible playbook.

  • Is a VPN necessary for torrenting?
  • You all seem to be starting from the basis that downloading a torrent is illegal. It is not, it is only distribution/upload that's an issue. If you behave as a leech and kill it after you're done the worst you're going to get is a complaining letter from your ISP.

I torrent without a VPN and haven't had a single email from my ISP, but I presume it's because I'm a business customer.

  • Pentagon orders AMRAAM missiles worth over $1 billion for Ukraine
  • It’s also awful that tens of millions of Americans can’t afford to go to a doctor, but I don’t see you calling for us to spend less on war in order to bolster the welfare of our own people.

Yes, it's such a shame that countries can't fund two things at the same time. 🙄
