iCloud Mail vs Google Mail - what are your opinions?
  • I wrote a whole thing on this, but tldr; I switched from Gmail to iCloud about a year ago. Gmail is better at filters, search, web UI, and spam filtering. iCloud is better at native UI, offline support, and ecosystem integration.

Overall I’m happy with it but only because I’m willing to pay the costs for the benefits, which I think is pretty rare.

  • Michael Tsai Blog - Is It Safe to Store Passwords and 2FA Codes Together?
  • It depends on your password manager and sync method. With most if I take all your devices away from you, you can’t go to any public computer and access all your passwords using only what you know. You need to have one of your physical devices.

  • Michael Tsai Blog - Is It Safe to Store Passwords and 2FA Codes Together?
  • Password managers do have two factors: the vault (have) and the master password (know).

  • Assuming I was, or was related to, a stingy restaurant owner (I am not). What would be the most optimal way of skimping people on fries?
  • Thinner the better. It creates more places for air. Same for curly fries. Even a slightly bent normal fry hogs more space than a straight one.

  • Any apps for the whole fediverse? (Lemmy, Kbin and Mastodon?)
  • Technically all of them work already, just with subpar UI. If you follow a Lemmy community on Mastodon by searching for it like a user, the community’s posts show in your Mastodon timeline.

Each community post appears as a Mastodon post boosted by the community “user”. Threaded replies all work.

To make a post to a community, you tag the user in any top-level Mastodon post.

  • Apple doesn’t want want you to buy their headset (opinion)
  • I do think they’ll eventually sell a trimmed down Apple Vision if only because they’re launching with just Apple Vision Pro, but I don’t think the reasoning is that complicated.

Apple is not known for dead products or ecosystems, so there’s confidence in its success; developers will be on board. It was the same thing for the iPad, and it was the same thing for the Apple Watch.

The high price is just a reflection of the three compounding factors: it’s AR/VR, it’s Apple, and it’s the Pro version. So it was always going to be expensive.

  • What are your offsite backup solutions
  • Take a look at intelligent tiering for a good no-frills solution! Each item automatically determines its tier based on how often you access it.

  • Personal data... historian?
  • I’d look at karlicoss’s personal data infrastructure for inspiration (or perhaps deterrent).

  • Happy Autistic Pride Day!
  • It’s made by and for people with autism. The link details this.

  • Looking for a Markdown-based wiki
  • Obsidian is a fantastic note taking app that focuses on cross-linked notes, so is effectively a personal wiki.

It has a paid add on that lets you publish it to a website, or you can just do it yourself since the files are all Markdown.

  • BIFL Glasses

I use glasses for reading and driving only, which means I have them with me all the time but usually am not wearing them.

I hate bringing cases around, so I've got into the habit of getting frames on the thicker side so they can last being shoved in my pocket, sat on, jangled around with my keys, etc.

I've found pairs that surprisingly survive this behavior 1–2 years, and am curious if any frames can go even longer, possibly indefinitely. Any recommendations?

My 5.11 belt. Every day, 10 years, no sign of stopping.

Used to go through a belt every 1-2 years, now I don't think I'll ever buy another.
