What are you reading this week? [7/16/23]
  • I just finished Thief, Liar, Lady and I would not recommend it. It’s a retelling of Cinderella that has a lot of fantasy elements and political intrigue, however none of it is fleshed out. It was an interesting concept, but by 50% you can tell the author doesn’t know how to resolve it, characters lose their voice and motivations, and there are some pretty questionable themes surrounding consent to top it all off.

  • Has anyone managed to recover from а serious burnout without taking a sabbatical? How?
  • I’m not sure if this information is helpful- but to tack onto what the previous commenter said one day I realized the work wouldn’t end and that was the point of my job. I know that’s sounds kind of obvious.

I have a bad habit of sort of racing towards an end goal and never stopping to be present. I do this at work as well and realizing the above has made it easier to enjoy the aspects of my position I do like, and get past the ones I don’t. All you can do is what you can do and what’s left will be there tomorrow.

And a note on hobbies- is there a way to portablize yours more? For example I love drawing, so I got an iPad and I’m able to pull it out and draw wherever. Similar story with my boyfriend buying a laptop has really increased his ability to make music. I’m not sure what your hobbies are but it may be worth treating yourself to whatever makes it easier to fit them in the pockets of time you do have.

  • did anyone else from the USA grow up being forced to say the pledge to the flag in school?
  • I was never forced which is kind of notable since I’m from Alabama. I think my school was terrified of getting slapped with a lawsuit.

  • Jumpscares
  • Seriously that moment with Bilbo still makes me jump!

  • The cringiest presidential campaign ad video you will ever see, courtesy of Ron DeSantis
  • Worth noting also that Achilles (Brad Pitt’s character) is thought to have been gay (or at least in a couple of homosexual relationships). Obviously not 100% certain of this, but at the very least it’s how he’s viewed through a modern lens. So it’s weird that someone specifically went after this specific clip rather than any other ancient fighter in a movie? 300, Gladiator, I mean there were options.

All I know is this ad is going to live rent free in my head for a while.

  • You are now an RPG character, what does your character sheet say?

  • What's your most-loved non-star movie/show?
  • This is true- the premise isn’t scientifically sound in any way. But the movie isn’t really about that. It’s about the journey through space under the stress of this being earths last chance and also kind of eldritch horror. Plus probably my fav roll for Chris Evans. He does a great job being an unlikeable guy who is technically right so you can’t really be against him. I liked it lol.

  • What's your most-loved non-star movie/show?
  • I love this show so much! It seriously has is all and like no one knows about it. I’m about to make my boyfriend watch it actually.

  • Necromancers
  • This is making me want to go back to Druid! Initially I started with the Druid, then my boyfriend wanted to change his class so I tried sorcerer. I really love the sorcerer, it’s so much fun, but shapeshifting was so much fun too!

  • What's your recurring nightmare? What do you think it means?
  • My reoccurring nightmare is being surrounded by a swarm of bugs. It’s usually wasps, but it can be other stuff too. It always takes place in my childhood bedroom. I always clamp my hand over my mouth because I’m afraid if I scream they’ll fly in my mouth. But I always end up screaming and they fly in my mouth and I wake up.

I’m not sure it has a very deep meaning to be honest. When I was a kid part of my room was a finished attic that was connected to our real attic which apparently had a very bad wasp nest. Everyday during warm months I’d find one or two in my room and have to deal with them. Now that I don’t live in a place with bugs I don’t have this dream anymore.

  • What do people use to track their reading?
  • I know a lot of people that bullet Journal their reading lists. And it’s also possible to digitally bullet journal with apps like goodnotes.

  • What's something good that happened to you today?
  • Today but also over the past few days: I’ve had three people stop me to compliment my hair. I dyed it purple myself so that felt very validating :D
