up but endangered or slowly dying: lemmy.globe.pub (community creation no longer works)

lemmy.globe.pub Trying to create a new community for satnavs - Globe.pub

Hello - I’m relatively new to this ghost town node :). I created [email protected] [/c/[email protected]] [https://lemmy.globe.pub/c/finance] a few months ago to have a place to discuss foreign exchange and making payments abroad, which was lacking in the whole threadiverse. Anyway, I’m...

lemmy.globe.pub is a tiny low-activity instance dedicated to travel related topics. Apparently some ass-hat created some community called “G's Chicken and Waffles” and spammed it with what’s claimed to be Ruby videos. So now creating new communities is dysfunctional, perhaps in response to that asshole. Of course with only 6 communities and like 6 or so users, this instance may be doomed.

I wonder if the signal to noise ratio were to improve, if that would enable the node to improve overall.

Hello, I'm Matt
  • Regarding scuba, it’s worth noting that it’s incompatible with air travel to some extent. I heard a story about a guy who did a scuba dive on vacation somewhere, then got on a plane and experienced intense pain as the aircraft gained altitude because the nitrogen level in his body can’t take the pressure differences (or something like that). The pilot was forced to fly at a low altitude for the entire trip to prevent the diver from suffering. It’s probably part of scuba training but thought it should be mentioned.

Trying to create a new community for satnavs

Hello - I’m relatively new to this ghost town node :). I created [email protected] a few months ago to have a place to discuss foreign exchange and making payments abroad, which was lacking in the whole threadiverse.

Anyway, I’m trying to create another new community with these parameters:

    • name: navigation_technology
    • display name: Navigation technology, SatNav, OSM, …
    • sidebar Everything about hardware and software used for navigation.

But when clicking the “create” button, it just spins for a moment and goes back to a create button. No error message, but will not move forward.

Has community creation been disabled? I noticed a strange new group called “G's Chicken and Waffles” which actually just has posts about the Ruby programming language. So I wonder if that possible spam/abuse might have led to restrictions on creating communities.

(edit) Perhaps it should be slightly broader than navigation tech, and be “travel technology”, which could then cover, idk, things like tourist review software or the ITA software app. Though it would probably still be primarily navigation tech that people discuss.

Is this a place to track ghost instances like wayfarershaven.eu?

This is a ghost instance: wayfarershaven.eu

It was apparently a lemmy server at one point, but no longer exists. Yet if you visit this community, it’s live:

    https://lemmy.globe.pub/c/[email protected]

You can post there but you’ll get burnt if you spend much time there because it’s just a ghost town. Would be nice if the Lemmy client would warn users that the original server is dead.
