What are your thoughts on being called Lemmings if this platform becomes a staple?
  • I prefer this too. Lemming means a small rodent. It's one thing to be apart of a site with a rodent mascot but another thing to refer to myself as a rodent, lol. No thanks. Not to mention the other derogatory definition of the word. Lemmies is cute and close enough to Lemmy.

Edit: I misread the definition of lemming and thought it was a group of rodents that included rats, but they are different creatures belonging to the same superfamily Muroidea that includes rats, mice, and hamsters. But I still don't know if I want to call myself a Lemming. I've already seen people make fun of those here who call themselves Lemmings when I checked out the instance that was recently defederated from lemmy.world. I think it's a name that could be an easy target for those who want to hate on the Lemmy userbase. Why make it easier for them? It could turn off future users. Although I can feel sorry for the animals that their name has some derogatory definitions like being a synonym for sheeple, if we are to call ourselves Lemmings, we need to come up with our own definition of it that's more positive. Even then I don't know how well that will work.

  • All 12 LOONA Members Leave BlockBerryCreative
  • I'm glad they're all free now! I remember that impressive boycott the fans did of their last comeback that the members didn't want. It's sad LOONA had to end up like this, but hopefully they will all get to better places in their careers without BBC.

Could federation be a turn-off for more 'mainstream' users?
  • Wow, I didn't know defederation was a thing until reading the comments in this post. In that case, I agree with the OP that not leading with federation when promoting Lemmy is probably the best.

  • TWICE MISAMO - Marshmallow
  • I agree. Such a nice, chill summer bop. Loving their low voices in this. I wonder if we'll get choreography. Also thanks for creating this community! I hope more kpop fans will join us here soon. 🙂

Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators From Subreddits Continuing Apollo-Related Blackouts - MacRumors

www.macrumors.com Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators From Subreddits Continuing Apollo-Related Blackouts

As some subreddits continue blackouts to protest Reddit's plans to charge high prices for its API, Reddit has informed the moderators of those...

    > In a comment shared by r/Apple moderator @aaronp613, Reddit cited its Moderator Code of Conduct and said that it has a duty to keep communities "relied upon by thousands or even millions of users" operational. Mods who do not agree to reopen subreddits that have gone private will be removed. > > > If a moderator team unanimously decides to stop moderating, we will invite new, active moderators to keep these spaces open and accessible to users. If there is no consensus, but at least one mod wants to keep the community going, we will respect their decisions and remove those who no longer want to moderate from the mod team.

Reddit CEO slams protesters, says he'll change site rules
  • Yikes. I can see this going badly and leading to hostile takeovers of subreddits if not implemented with safeguards. Also, they already "fuzz" the voting on posts. Who's to say they won't fuzz the voting on this. I'm really happy I left reddit. u/spez will run it into the ground.

  • Lemmy has quickly surpassed 100k users.
  • Nice to see the growth! I came over from reddit, hearing about Lemmy when the blackout was being planned. Lurked a few days and finally joined today! I really like Lemmy.

I've been on reddit for a looong time (arrived there during the migration from Digg) and have seen other migrations from reddit and this one seems most successful and diverse. Way to go reddit for pissing off thousands of subreddits instead of just one or two. The upside of that for us is a variety of communities created in our new home so there's much less of a reason to go back to reddit. Many thanks to everyone creating, contributing, modding, and admining here!

Aside from maybe a few niche subreddits until they find their way over here or I find a replacement community somewhere else, as of now I don't plan on going back to reddit. I haven't been there since the day before the blackout. If I'm really curious about what's going on at reddit, I just check teddit as long as it's available.

  • Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?
  • Great list! I agree with all your points. These features too keep me on Android.

  • Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?
  • I like how Android allows more customization. Also, I use a Galaxy Note 9 that I recently got from eBay, so I still have a headphone jack and sd card slot. I hate Apple for starting the trend of removing useful hardware from phones and laptops while still raising prices and hate even more that Androids started copying that. I miss removable battery phones. This Note 9 is my first phone without a removable battery.
