How some people afford to travel around the world for months without working?
  • I've seldom met travellers with a trust fund. And I don't have a trust fund myself, nor have received loads of money from parents to fund my travels. This is just such a bullshit answer that always pops up.

  • How some people afford to travel around the world for months without working?
  • I have travelled for very little money in the past, hitchhiking my way around, sleeping behind gas stations or in nature, or utilizing sites like Couchsurfing where people can host you for free (in exchange for cultural exchange). I've crossed all of Europe and into the Balkans this way, as well as went up and around the western states in the US. While I realize this isn't the most fun way to travel for many (but for me it is!), travelling is still doable on a very low budget if you know how to travel and prioritize the concept of travel before your own comfort. I've done a lot of regular backpacking as well. Of course, the situation complicates itself if you're from the US, have a family, lots of student loans or health care debt to pay off, and have very little PTO. In Sweden at least, as with many other countries in Europe, we have a minimum of 5 weeks PTO. And either way, it's customary for people between high school and university to go on a gap year travelling the world.

With some proper budgeting and staying at hostels, or doing things like Worldpackers where you volunteer at hostels for room and sometimes food, you can travel the world for $10-15k per year easily. If you only do half a year or whatever, it's really not that much money if you prioritize travelling and saving up before other stuff. For some it might still be a lot of money, but it must cost something if you want to go for such a length of time. Otherwise you'll just have to become a busker and a vagabond, hitchhiking around. Australia even has a working holiday-visa for 1-3 years up til the age of 31 that is very popular for people to go on, where people work odd jobs in agriculture and what not, often with accommodation included and very good pay (even if the work can be tough), which then is used to continue travelling.

For the guy in the video, biking around is quite cheap compared to flying and whatnot. If you're camping by yourself, your only expense is food, if you've done off with all the other obligations in life like rent and loans. This means you can do it very, very cheap as well. I don't know his situation, but he probably sold off everything else, gave up his place or rented it out. Travelling that way inherently means some risk-taking. And for many people it's worth it.

  • Not everyone is American with 1 week PTO and horrendous health care debts or student loans to pay off. In Sweden at least, it's customary for younger people to take a gap year between high school and university for example, and backpack around the world. With some proper budgeting and staying at hostels, or doing things like Worldpackers where you volunteer at hostels for room and sometimes food, you can travel the world for $10-15k per year easily. Does it matter which Lemmy I'm in?
  • As of now, it does matter. I'm on kbin.social, but atm I can't see most content and comments from lemmy instances. Something is not federating correctly.

  • Is federation broken again/still broken?
  • It definitely feels broken. There are still huge amounts of contents and comments not showing up. I posted about this the other day, and the answer that it was working as intended, but there's just too much content missing for it to feel true. I can go to !technology, and see a post with 50+ comments on beehaw.org, but Kbin only shows 3. If that post is even on here.

  • Is Mr Beast a good person?
  • Yes, indeed. I'd heavily recommend Thoreau's critique of philantrophy: https://thecuriouspeople.wordpress.com/2014/06/03/thoreau-philanthropy-is-overrated-walden-44/ . While it's written 200 years ago and on a religious foundation, he has a point.

“Philanthropy is almost the only virtue which is sufficiently appreciated by mankind. Nay, it is greatly overrated; and it is our selfishness which overrates it.” — Henry David Thoreau, “Economy,” Walden

  • I just wish OMW or something similar to Android was still in development. Anyone that knows anything about this?

  • What's your email client of choice?
  • K-9 on Android, Thunderbird on desktop!

  • Automatic forward to /sub from kbin.social when it's set as default in settings?
  • It works when I press the kbin logo to go back to the homepage, then it's just /sub. But if I type "kbin.social" in the address bar, it doesn't redirect to /sub automatically.

  • What's up with "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."? Is this working as intended or is it a bug?
  • So it's basically working as intended? It does feel like an annoying "issue" though. Thanks for explaining anyhow!

  • What's up with "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."? Is this working as intended or is it a bug?
  • Thanks for the clarifications. Regarding 3, why does some new content from e.g. [email protected] gets pushed to an instance like lemmy.world, but not all new content? I mean, if some content gets pushed it seems to be aware of that instance. Or is it random which content gets pushed? Does this mean that the other instance will never get all new content? This seems like quite the issue?

Edit: ok, I think I get it. So if someone from a random instance posts to e.g., [email protected], and that instance doesn't know about kbin.social, it won't get pushed to this instances representation of the [email protected] magazine?

  • What's up with "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."? Is this working as intended or is it a bug?
  • I've heard this as well, but this is regarding new posts and comments not showing up. Not the old ones. And when they do show up after some unknown time, it might still be incomplete.

  • What's up with "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."? Is this working as intended or is it a bug?
  • Yes, but this is regarding magazines from e.g. lemmy.world, which to my knowledge is not defederating from kbin.

  • What's up with "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."? Is this working as intended or is it a bug?
  • I think the main issue is that I'm not getting all comments or posts from the other magazine, even though all the posts and comments are from that same magazine (but on the other instance). There might be some delay involved and that it sooner or later will retrieve them as older posts seems to have more comments on them.

What's up with "The magazine from the federated server may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance."? Is this working as intended or is it a bug?

I've been seeing this for quite a bit, and thought it'd resolve itself once CloudFlare was taken off, but I'm still seeing it on many external communities from e.g. Lemmy. Not all posts or comments are visible from Kbin. Any idea on what's going on?

Edit, clarification: when I visit e.g., https://kbin.social/m/[email protected] the above mentioned sentence shows up, and I'm not able to see threads created even 13 hrs ago, like this one on the original instance https://beehaw.org/post/927935?scrollToComments=true. New content doesn't seem to be pushed to this instance at kbin.social. This is the issue I'm referring to.

Edit 2: This is probably the answer: https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/131241/What-s-up-with-The-magazine-from-the-federated-server-may#entry-comment-517045

Automatic forward to /sub from kbin.social when it's set as default in settings?

If I now enter kbin.social in the address bar, I'm taken to the main page (all magazines), even if I'm logged in and have subscribed magazines set as default front page view. Is there a way to fix this? Or something planned?

  • Where will nsfw content end up if it's in the end banned from all major platforms? E.g. reddit (likely sooner or later with the API changes), imgur and tumblr (already happened), twitter might happen too but might just burn down before they can make that change.. The internet is surely shifting to a shareholder-friendly corporate space.

What's your tradition and how did you make the choice?

I practice Chan, Chinese Zen. The Chan temple was just the Buddhist centre closest to me, but I've never regretted the choice. I like the bodhisattva vows, and appreciate the focus on meditation. I'm also a fan of Chinese culture, and I like the traditions of Chan more than Japanese Zen. What about you?
