Born at less than 320ppm CO₂.

Programmer and bus driver. It's a long story :-)

Based northern UK & Scotland

Europhile, especially since I worked 1½ years in north Holland.

Currently: C#, C, the language that shall not be named

\#Assembly (for fun) on Intel PC and IBM #mainframe (emulated, these days. Download and unzip "TK4-" and you can play, as well).

\#rexx #PL1 #SAS too.

Also other things, including a compiler for a new language. That should be ready in a decade. Or 2.

How Would You Spec a Framework 13 for an Educational Use Case?
  • @FireTower @otter I have 2 USB-A adaptors, because I use an external CD drive with additional USB-A cable to deliver power. Same for the external DVD drive.

I also have a 2nd (spare) USB-C in my bag if I need it, or in case one gets damaged.

  • Plasma KDE for Framework 16 Laptop
  • @Darkbug @Feeee23 My FW13 is happy on 22.04 LTS, and 24 is too recent for me. After getting bitten by (what looks like) an optimisation bug with gcc -O3 in Fedora 40, I'm back on Ubuntu, and holding back with 22.04 LTS for a while longer :-)

  • Linux Compatibility on the Framework Laptop
  • @redd Fedora 39 here on an Intel FW13. It's my first Linux-only hardware and I only run Windoze (in a Boxes VM) for one application.

    No regrets.

Minor niggles only, one of them probably caused by me being hasty. It has never failed to do my usual (edit/compile/debug)

I never got VMware networking right (possibly due to lack of experience with VMware), so I stick with Boxes.

And I installed Win10 on a spare SSD, just to set up the fingerprint sensor. I've not booted that SSD since then.

  • Buying components separately, saving money?
  • @lemmytellyousomething I got the FW 13 DIY with a small SSD, then upgraded to 4TB from somewhere else.

  • WHY? My inner monk suffers
  • @sarmale @mineapple The only change I'd like to see is replaceable key caps on the FW13, so I can have a penguin (Tux) instead of a 'Windows' key.

For now I use a penguin sticker :-)

Why is the US \ so small? ;-)

Several countries have \ taller, and wider at the top.

My UK keyboard is the same, and I'm probably too old to adapt to a smaller \ and having the | \ @ ~ and # in (what I see as) the wrong places :-)

  • Notebookcheck: Framework Laptop 13.5 Ryzen 7 7840U review: So much better than the Intel version
  • @Rand @Nitrousoxide Just got my 13th gen with FW-supplied RAM (and a Corsair SSD).

Lost 2% in 6 hours using Fedora 38. I haven't tried Windows yet.

I had USB-C, 2 * USB-A and audio card inserted, then just shut the lid for a meeting and forgot all about it until I opened the lid in the evening.

So it can work well. I expect progress will continue, although hibernation would be nice as well.

  • [@framework](https://lemmy.ml/c/framework) Has anyone here got ideas about how to deal with a false delivery notice from FedEx?
  • @Contramuffin I decided to give it a go, and downloaded Workstation bundle and ran it. Installed OK, but running VMware it needs kernel-headers-6.5.10-300.fc39.x86_64 and I can't find that anywhere, so I guess it's a bit soon for Fedora 39 :-)

  • [@framework](https://lemmy.ml/c/framework) Has anyone here got ideas about how to deal with a false delivery notice from FedEx?
  • @Contramuffin Anyway, parcel undamaged/unopened.

Fedora 39 running nicely. Very happy :-)

I've had a thought--previous machine had Windows 8.1 Pro for one old app, and I need 1 copy of Windows anyway.

How about keeping Fedora as my daily driver, with #VMware Workstation running an image of my old Windows 8.1 Pro?

Any 'gotcha' I should worry about?

  • [@framework](https://lemmy.ml/c/framework) Has anyone here got ideas about how to deal with a false delivery notice from FedEx?
  • @Contramuffin Well, well!

Today, FedEx said the parcel was still stuck in customs, then 20 mins later someone who said he is a neighbour brought it around on foot, saying it was delivered to his pkace 2 days ago.

Vikki didn't recognise him from the local area...

  • @framework I've just had a reply to my support ticket confirming it's been escalated to their logistics team.

Maybe now I'll get some info :-)

I hope it's insured for this!

@framework Has anyone here got ideas about how to deal with a false delivery notice from FedEx?

No response yet from Framework via the support link in the order confirmation e-mail.

\#fedex have form for this. Someone (driver?) 'signs' for the package, which never arrives. Customer kicks up a stink, then FedEx sometimes find it down the back of a sofa 2 days later.

This seems very, very dodgy to me!
