wefwef is so good it should be an app and not a web app
  • You might already be aware, but Lemmy can send you an email every time someone replies to your comments.

Just go to Settings in Lemmy and make sure the ‘Send notifications to Email’ box is checked. Assuming you have notifications turned on with your email app, then you can be notified in a timely fashion.

I know it’s not as good as in-app notifications but it’s a workaround that is good enough for me.

  • Should we change app names?
  • Well I honestly don’t understand your take lol. Tell me if I’m misunderstanding something, but you seem to be holding two contradictory views at the same time.

On one hand, you are saying that it doesn’t matter what the app is called. You point out that we previously used a site called ‘Reddit’ and that didn’t have anything to do if we used it or not. You insulted the people who care about the app name by suggesting that they might be 12 year olds who were worried what their friends might think……

And yet, at the same time, you also very strongly hold the view that the app name can’t be a boring/bland name. You went off on a rant about how anyone who does like a so-called “boring” name (well, boring according to you) must be “simple-minded and devoid of all fantasy and joy” and that these people must live sad lives…… But this contradicts your first point about how the name of the app doesn’t matter.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you seem to be criticising others for caring about the app name whilst simultaneously also caring about the app name yourself. So the next time you argue that an app name sounds too generic and boring, someone might reply “Are you twelve, and worried about what your friends will think about you when you're using an app with a boring name? Who would give a f***?”

  • Should we change app names?
  • I’m also new to Lemmy (I signed up during the two-day Reddit blackout), but I’m already getting the sense that Lemmy is a classier place than Reddit :)

I just hope that Lemmy will continue to grow, but without picking up the toxicity found in Reddit (and other social media platforms).

  • Currently, people looking for alternatives for Reddit on Google will see Lemmy listed first.
  • Yeah, it’s most likely caused by Google profiling OP and showing what it thinks OP wants to see.

Out of interest, I just entered “Reddit vs” into DuckDuckGo (which is a search engine that doesn’t profile its users, and it gets most of its search results from Bing). I got the following search suggestions:

    • reddit vs quora
    • reddit vs twitter
    • reddit vs discord
    • reddit vs anime
    • reddit vs facebook

I can’t believe that anime made the list but Lemmy didn’t lol

  • Google admits Reddit Blackout made search results worse: Report
  • Thanks for confirming that it’s not just an issue for me :)

At the time of clicking this post, it had 10 upvotes with 100% upvote percentage…. So this makes me think that most people don’t click the link to the article. They just see the headline, upvote and move on.

  • Google admits Reddit Blackout made search results worse: Report
  • Is this link broken or is it just a problem with my phone/app? (I’m using wefwef)

I was looking forward to seeing news about Reddit taking a hit on Google’s rankings but when I click the link it takes me to an unrelated story with the following headline: “Right time to bring UCC, Opposition should refrain from communal politics: Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi”

Am I the only one having this problem?

  • Should we change app names?
  • I respectfully disagree with you on the memorability of the name.

I would respectfully suggest that if someone hears the name of this app for the first time, and then had to mention it a week later, they might think “oh what was that silly name of the Lemmy app? Was is wepwep? wiffwaff?”… whereas I would find Voyager to be more memorable, and there isn’t confusion as to how it is spelled.

That being said, there is one area where I concede that wefwef would be a better name than Voyager, and that is SEO (search engine optimisation). If you type “wefwef” into Google (well I prefer to use DuckDuckGo lol), then you’ll find the web app on the first page, whereas searching “Voyager” will give you lots of Star Trek stuff to scroll past.

So if I were making the case for the name wefwef, I would argue the SEO aspect rather than the memorability aspect.

  • Should we change app names?
  • I think wefwef is a silly name and I’m surprised that so many people in the comment section like it, because I find the name to be cringeworthy (sorry).

But of course, I will still continue to use this app regardless of what it’s called, just like I still use DuckDuckGo as my search engine, despite it having a ridiculous name lol.

  • PSA: Let’s fill Kbin/Lemmy with content to attract and KEEP new users
  • It’s a mobile web app, so iOS users can visit https://wefwef.app using Safari, then click the Share icon, the click ‘Add to Home Screen’.

I don’t use Android so I don’t know if there’s a similar process to turn a link to a website into an icon on the Home Screen. I just did a web search and found this website, which I hope is useful for you https://beebom.com/ways-turn-any-website-android-app/

(Also I’m new to wefwef and this is my first comment using it)

  • Tomorrow's API Change
  • I’m not the guy you replied to but I just wanted to say thanks for mentioning wefwef. I hadn’t heard of it before but I just looked it up and gave it a try. This app (well, mobile web app) looks amazing! The UI is very similar to Apollo and I think it will help me through this painful transition from Reddit to Lemmy. Thanks again :)

  • Nice update
  • Well that’s strange.

If you happen to have another iPhone, you could use it to rule out your theory that the issue is caused by the caching.

So if you download the Mlem app on a separate iPhone, then it shouldn’t be affected by the cache, which I assume is stored locally on your current iPhone (although I’m also not a iOS dev, so I wouldn’t know if that’s true).

  • Nice update
  • Hmm I didn’t think it was possible for cached app data to remain after the app has been deleted, but I could be wrong.

I was going to suggest that maybe your Lemmy server was busy so you should try again later, but I see on your GitHub issue that you’ve tried two different instances, so that’s probably not the issue.

I assume you’ve already tried restarting your phone, and I assume you are already using the latest version of iOS. I’m not sure if there’s any benefit to deleting and reinstalling the TestFlight app as well?

Sorry, I think you’ve done all you can do :( I hope the Mlem devs are able to fix the issue soon.

  • Nice update
  • I don’t know if this is expected behaviour or a bug, but I lost all my favourite subs too, so you’re not the only one who has been affected.

I was only using the favourites feature because I wanted a way to list all the communities that I’m subscribed to. As far as I’m aware, there isn’t a way to view your subs list yet (though please correct me if I’m wrong).

  • [Community Update] Some testing numbers and more info from the Mlem Team!
  • Great work. Thanks for your hard work.

I’d like to make a couple of points if that’s ok:

    • I had marked some subs as favourites within the Mlem app, but they have been removed from my favourites since the update to version 0.0.7 Beta (I’m not complaining btw, just wanted to make you aware in case it affects other users too).

    • I noticed that the posts themselves support Dynamic Text (a feature that enables users to choose the size of onscreen text in iOS) as well as the text box to leave a reply…. But the actual comments on the posts are always at a fixed size. It makes it difficult for people with visual impairments because they can’t increase the size of the font in the comments. I can’t find this issue mentioned on the Github board. Am I allowed to request the feature there even though I’m not a dev?

Again, thanks for your hard work.
