Ooo, nice! I've been meaning to learn more about cli/tui stuff, anyway. Thanks!
I have enough money to buy a more modern Lenovo laptop, but I'm definitely considering getting one renewed simply because of how cheap it is. I'd prefer newer age specs tho. Thank you!
Oh :( As annoying as that is I can't bring myself to completely take it off the board. Thanks for the warning, though! Nobody's mentioned that so far :)
Ooo, nice! Although I don't really want to use Ubuntu myself (nothing wrong with the distro itself, I've just tried others I like), the knowledge it's Linux compatible is amazing!
Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?
I'm considering getting a laptop for Linux and want to know a few things before I do. Some important info before I start: I don't plan on using the laptop for anything too intense, mainly writing, digital art, streaming, browsing, and maybe very mild video editing (cropping at least and shortening at most). I would also prefer the laptop to be inexpensive, preferably under 1000 USD
I mainly want to know if whether I should get a laptop by a manufacturer that specializes in Linux or a laptop that runs a different OS (exp: Windows) to install Linux on later. I've also scouted out quite a few distros and have a good idea of which ones I would like using
I've already looked at a few mainline Linux hardware producers like System76 but want to know if it's worth it before sinking money into it
VPNs protect your IP address, which is useful, but it ends there. Your IP is known to your VPN provider and can even still be found by those tech-savvy enough if you don't take the right precautions. Basically, VPNs are useful, but don't expect them to be the ultimate privacy multi-tool. It's more like one of many different tools to protect yourself online
Will probably use Reddit every now and again but Lemmy has been a MUCH more pleasent experience overall, I can't see Reddit becoming nearly as nice
Yeah, that's why I wanna dual boot myself, except there's some software I need on Windows that isn't available on Linux along with games. Also, what distro(s) do you use? I've already picked out a few candidates for what I'll use, but it's nice hearing firsthand experiences
Trust me, I know (I tried running Linux on my current NVDIA PC... Never again). While I plan on running Windows (mainly due to how much support it has for like. Everything) I do plan on running Linux on a laptop in the future and possibly dual booting
As sad as I am by how Reddit turned out, this was the kick I needed to start truly indulging in the fediverse! Everybody's been nice so far, and I hope that it continues to be that way
No, sadly. Besides, I don't know if I would go with that option even if it was. I've been wanting to build my own PC for a while and I am willing to run the risk, although it would be nice to have somebody with experience help
I would, but unfortunately I don't know anyone with experience in this area. But I won't be doing it by myself, and I've done quite a bit of research, so I at least think I won't mess up to the point of breaking anything
Probably. I hope that people start spreading to other instances cause, as nice as it is to have so many new people, it becomes a bit bloated. And besides, everybody using just one server kinda takes the jpy out of the fediverse
I figured as much, lol. You've all done an amazing job at keeping the servers going despite all the new traffic! The lag isn't too big a problem, I'm just happy it's not a problem on my end
That's what I figured as well! I'm both glad more people are joining Lemmy but also a bit sad it's taking so long to load.. I'm sure it'll sort itself out eventually
Is anybody else experiencing lag?
I've been getting a lot of lag on the site and want to know if it's something anybody else is experiencing lag as well
Thank you! And I was planning on getting cable ties, although the ones I was going to get were zip ties. Velcro ties do sound much easier to manage, though, lol. Setting the ram correctly somehow sounds both simple yet stressful
Thanks! Choosing a case that's small enough to be easy to transport but not hard to build in is a concern, but I believe my current case will do well! Setting up the bios is what I'm more concerned with, but I'm sure I'll manage. And sorry but the vagueness of the post, I'm generally looking for any advice instead of specific advice
Ah, thank you! I've already been using PCPartPicker, but it has been an AMAZING help. I don't think I could handle the stress of making a parts list without it
I care less for what happens to the website and more what happens to the users. Having a website where you build and found such large communities fuck you over like this must be heartbreaking
All your points are very true, unfortunately. It just saddens me seeing companies hurt the very community that even allowed them to rise to popularity
It's sad to see this happen but I'm (unfortunately) not surprised. Whenever a site/software/etc becomes the main/only thing most people use it starts taking advantage of that. I just hope it happens less in the future with the rise of decentralized nd federated social media
