(Opinion piece) Hello, PC gaming here: Are the consoles OK? With sales dropping and confidence declining, how close are we to the end of consoles as we know them?
  • Don't forget that games are significantly cheaper on PC, especially if you wait for the first sale (which'll come much quicker on PC). The upfront cost is indeed higher, but depending on how many games you buy you'll probably recoup that cost within one console generation.

  • What are the default permissions for / and /boot on Arch?
  • Good on you for getting it fixed. One of the reasons Linux is a great OS in my opinion is that everything is in the file system and not in some arcane hidden thing. So every problem is solvable without a reinstall if you're motivated enough to figure it out.

  • two party system is a scam
  • Not sure what you have against minimum wage, it works well in other countries (I'm from the Netherlands). Obviously it doesn't solve everything by itself, but it's definitely a valuable part of a range of measures to treat people fairly. It's a fantasy that everyone can be educated to a level above minimum wage.

  • Why has Firefox not removed third-party cookies, despite the fact that Chrome has begun phasing them out?
  • Firefox has been able to block all third-party / cross-site cookies for ages. It's just not the default because it breaks some sites. But dive into the settings and you can easily set it to block all cross-site cookies, or even all cookies if you prefer.

  • Laptop companies: which one?
  • Most of the delays are effectively from pre-ordering. I ordered mine just after last Christmas, got it the first week in January. Would have probably been faster without the holidays. Also, get the AMD model if you can, it's much better than the Intel offerings.

  • I use Linux
  • Kernel panics are pretty rare though, I've had a lot more bluescreens than kernel panics in my life. If you want to criticise Linux for being complicated go right ahead but implying that it's unstable is a really weird take IMHO.

  • We did it?
  • I've had it for a couple of months now. Sure, it sucks, and I can't work currently, but I'd much rather have this than die though. This will pass (almost everyone gets better in a couple of years max), death is rather final. Also, don't kid yourself about the people that had COVID but don't experience long covid. Many of them have permanent changes to their body too, they just don't know it.

  • Please recommend your cheaper, reliable SSDs 2TB+ (4TB ideal)
  • You can have all three of those, but you won't get great performance. The Samsung QVO SATA drives are a great example. I wouldn't use those for an OS drive but they're fantastic for NAS or media use.

  • Can I use two different drives?
  • If everything went fine during production you're probably right. But there have definitely been batches of hard disks with production flaws which caused all drives from that batch to fail in a similar way.

  • The Motorola Razr Plus is still the most fun foldable I've used - Android Authority
  • I think the kinks have been worked out. Samsung is on it's fifth generation of foldables already and Motorola has made multiple as well that haven't been released in the states. No idea about the custom ROMs though.

  • Are movie and show file sizes more efficient than they were years ago?
  • Be warned though, some x265 stuff out there, particularly at 1080p and lower, is a reencode of a x264 source file. So lower filesize, but also slightly lower quality. Scene regulations say only higher resolutions should be x265.

  • What happens when Linus dies/retires?
  • This used to be the norm, not a weird thing that noone has thought of before. If you do this your kernel will be a lot smaller, boot faster, and be a bit more secure. Once you're booted it won't make any meaningful speed difference though.

  • The best MMOs in 2023 - PCGamer
  • There are more errors. Eve Online is 20 years old, not 18. He even lists 2003 as the release year. And Palia has been playable for a couple of months now, so it could have included far more information than that.

  • Space is starting to look like the better mining operation
  • It really isn't. We know it's possible, we roughly know how to build one, it's only our material science that isn't there yet. But there are promising leads in that direction and with the right investments that problem looks solvable.

With FTL our current science is saying that it's probably impossible and will never happen. We might be wrong about that, but if we are it's not going to be cracked anytime soon.
