Can you drive a manual transmission?
  • Mid 30s, US. First car was a manual, but I have an automatic now. I do miss it, but I probably drive much safer now that it's less fun. Even though it was just a beat up old passat I always felt like I was in forza driving the manual

  • anyone else using a tortilla press?
  • Instead of using the wax paper, get a large zip lock type bag. Cut it in half along the seams to make a sheet of plastic and then use that between the press and the tortilla. I usually rub the bag with a little bit of fat (lard, oil, etc) to keep them from sticking as much. It's more necessary for corn tortillas but I think it helps either way.

  • Without using pronouns (me, he, she, it, etc) or articles (a, an, the), how did you come up with your user name?
  • Oldslewfoot name of song about big bear named Old slew foot. Good song, good name. Oldslewfoot not bear, but man in bear shape, stole name.

  • Is there a business in your town, which you are 100% sure is a front?
  • Where I live they legalized marijuana, but didn't issue licenses for legal dispensaries for almost two years. Nearly every corner store and head shop is a front . There's even a pizza shop near by with weed for sale openly.

  • How many Lemmy users are non-technical background?
  • Stay at home parent, former chef. The closest thing to tech background I have is electrician training in night school.

  • My GF says I look hot when I do chores. Is this just a ploy to make me do more chores or is it an actual thing?
  • My wife calls it "chore-play" and it seems to really work for her. Even if its a trick, the house will be clean and everyone gets a little fun, what's the harm?

  • What podcasts are you listening to?
  • Honestly I'd start at the beginning, it's quite a fun story and I feel like a lot won't make sense if you dive into the middle. I'm a little more than halfway through. I first listened to Rouges Gambit and after that campaign was over I ended up getting really into the Aerois campaign.

  • What podcasts are you listening to?
  • High Rollers(DnD), Behind the Bastards, The Other States of America, The Daily Zeitgeist, History Unplugged, Empire

  • What is the last movie you watched and how was it?
  • The Banshee of Inisherin, I really enjoyed it. Very odd and funny in an uncomfortable, uneasy way. I especially enjoyed Kerry Condon as Siobhán, her performance was a great emotional counter point to the dead pan comedy between Colm and Pádraic.

  • Bannerlord merc campaign - how to gain first territory

So as the title said, I'm playing Bannerlord as a Battain clan. I have progressed to a tier 3 clan, and have entered the service first of the Battain king(but he was always fighting half the world and I kept dying) and now to the Vlandian king as a merc.

My question is how to best proceed towards having my own villages or cities? I have 105 troops so I can't exactly take a whole city or castle by my self. I'm not sure what I'm meant to do. I just keep fighting in the wars that pop up then hunt looters and win tournaments, but I am not sure if thats a good strategy.

Are there any musicians in this group? what do you play?
  • I've always wanted to learn banjo, but for some reason my brain gets so lost with 3 finger rolls. The next instrument I'm gonna try and figure out is mandolin, then I can still use my big clunky flatpick.

Are there any musicians in this group? what do you play?

Here's my guitar, Martin D-16. What's everyone's favorite tunes to jam? Anything you're trying to work on these days?

I'm trying to fill out some content here but posting videos hasn't picked up much involvement or traffic. Let's get this group going with a bit of discussion.

Edit because I asked questions I didn't myself answer:

The first tune I think to play when I'm practicing is usually "Red Haired Boy" or "Salt Creek". I like to mix and match A and B parts from tunes in the same key. These are my favorite "G" warm up exercise.

I'm trying to learn how to play with more focus on melody and avoid just stringing together other people's licks.

Yonder Mountain String Band - Half Moon Rising

Reaching back to my bluegrass awakening with this one. I grew up with the Grateful Dead and punk rock, Yonder was the first bluegrass adjacent group I had the pleasure to see. I still have a hard time with some of these old performances, but every once and a while I just get to missing this time in my life. RIP to the great Jeff Austin, I wish I could still see you make music.

TIL about Carrie Nation, a temperance advocate who was known to attack bars and taverns with a hatchet
  • I first heard this story after looking up the band "Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy" and finding temperance warriors instead.

Here's the band, if anyone's interested. They're sort of like if Folk Punk had horn sections like a jazz band, super fun and chaotic.

  • Those ducks in the pool, they had him in therapy for years

  • Mount & Blade - a community for all things related to TaleWorlds' cult medieval sandbox RPG
  • I just joined, I'm doing my first Bannerlord campaign now. Maybe once the group fills up someone can help my tier 3 clan become landed, I can't figure it out yet

  • Willi Carlisle - “What The Rocks Don’t Know” (Haw River Ballroom | Saxapahaw, NC 7.6.22)

Music @ 1:30 or so, but I love a good rambling intro from Mr. Carlisle.

This fella is hands down one of the best performers I've ever seen. Electric energy the whole way through.

Matt Heckler, "Haw River Ballad," // GemsOnVHS™
  • I saw Matt open for Devil Makes Three a few years back and I was blown away by his stage presence. I have been a fan of DM3 since their first record, and could have left right after Matt's set.

I hope he gets the recognition his work deserves. GemsOnVhs has introduced me to some of my favorite new music, Matt is definitely near the top of that list.

  • The Tony Rice Unit - Blue Railroad Train

Some of the finest playing, especially Sam's mandolin break. If Tony growls a quick "YEAH" after your break, you're doing something right

.357 String Band | Down On A Bender
  • Have you heard Joseph Hueber's solo work? It's not quite as punchy and wild, but the songwriting is top notch none the less. Thanks for sharing!

  • Favorite Dead year/tour?
  • I'd have to agree on 83, the more I listen to the Brent years, the more they become my favorite. I love Pig and Keith, but what Brent brought to the band really lit a fire in Jerry. Those two could really play off of each other so well.

  • Colter Wall
  • I think Coulter has been doing a great job with the western material. It feels more natural for him than his earlier stuff. I'm especially fond of "Diamond Joe" off the Western Swing & Waltzes album

I stumbled across this community, and I figured I'd put in a post to help get it going. Here is Nick Shoulders with his "Empty Yodel No. 0"
