PSA: Alternatives for the most popular lemmy.ml communities
  • So I decided to go to sopuli.xyz. Viewing their all/hot is not much different than what I have now. However Sopuli is closer to what I expected .ml to be. There are some instances with zero defederations (completely unsensored), but I'm happy not seeing porn, discrimination, or ads in their feed. @[email protected]

  • I have noticed the high level of political memes and threads and don't care for it. I didn't understand why they were so common, I thought we were all trying to get away from politics.

I will try a different instance and report back.

  • I hear you. When I first joined .ml, they were pressing for people NOT to join it. To create their own instances so that .ml didn't become a central entity, and get overwhelmed with users. The latter did occur during the reddit exodus.

I also agree that they can curate and manipulate the instance to their ideals, which will limit casual users and their reach.

I don't feel like I'm being secluded, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. I have seen hate for .ml users and hexbear users, and I really don't get it. The fediverse shouldn't be segregating users based on what instance they're in. That's like saying all US citizens are awful because they live there.

  • Why we gave up on learning how to play an instrument?
  • That's a cool take on it. I feel like I just haven't found a solid hobby that's fun to me. I've tried several, the only things that have partially stuck are video games, programming, and DND, but they still feel like a chore to keep learning.

  • Why we gave up on learning how to play an instrument?
  • I'm exactly the same. Hobbies just don't stick, and I can't commit to the grind of getting better at them.

Have you been diagnosed with adhd by chance? I haven't, but I suspect it's one symptom.

  • The views of .ml mods have not affected me. I don't really check my subscription feed, only /all or /top->day, therefor im still exposed to all those other communities.

The only instances that I've noticed are missing are porn related, and as an asexual, I don't have an interest in them. If I did, I could just visit a different site, like pornhub or w/e

Not all .ml users are tankies, or communist, or foss enthusiasts. I'm just a guy who likes memes and tech

  • My fellings were similar
  • I had the opposite reaction. When i got a prescription, I went from 1080p to 4k. I could see and read just fine, but I can't see fine details.

Then I could see all the pores and blemishes on people's faces, and it was kinda frightening. For someone to see that their whole life, it's probably normal, but for me, it's like people were wearing uncanny masks, and I couldn't get used to it.

Also, glasses gave me a headache like no other.

  • It's been around a year since a lot of us quit Reddit, myself included. I'm happy with Lemmy, but I still feel a bit lost online since leaving the old site. Discussion?
  • Like others, being on Lemmy dragged me away from the constant stream of endless gratification. I still check it a few times a day, at most, but much less than Reddit.

What Reddit still has over Lemmy is a huge database of answers. While many people have left Reddit or moved on, their comments stayed, and that includes many searchable and genuine answers.

It also has more communities. Game devs still use Reddit to host a lite web page (subreddit) for example. While the fediverse has many communities, alot of them are duplicates. Every instance has their own Memes community for example, which pollutes the feed sometimes.

In the last year, I've made less than 5 posts on Reddit, mostly asking questions. I don't browse it, I just end up on it from search results.

I wish the fediverse agreed on unique communities. It's cool that I can communicate with several different websites, but imagine if there was 5 reddit.com's and they all made their own memes subreddits. Either you have to subscribe to all of them and get duplicate memes, or you sub to one and miss out of 4x more.

Because those 5 reddits are all divided, so is the potential user base. I'm not saying we should go back to a single website, but rather that each website in the fediverse hosts one major community.

Alternatively, have an instance that merges all the other instances' communities so that all the meme communities appear as one, and all duplicates are filtered out.

  • I don't bother reading comments anymore
  • I cant cut it out of my diet cold turkey. As kids, we are given food and told to eat it. Also, we dont yet have enough vegetarian options that satisfy the same needs.

In another life, I'd be a vegetarian. I think farming milk and eggs (but not with industrial level abuse) is fine.

  • I don't bother reading comments anymore
  • I still eat meat, but I'm aware of the meat industry. I would love if we could thrive on lab-grown meat (where we are only killing cells) rather than the current (killing animals). Now that we're no longer eating animals purely for survival, we shouldn't be taking advantage of lesser beings.

Imagine if aliens came to earth and harvested us for food. We can beg and plead, but to the alien minds, who are much more intelligent to us, they interpret our cries as joy.

There was a music compilation album called "Ultimate Dance" from 2004 that my family listened to. I maintain a YouTube Playlist with all the songs, some were difficult to track down, being that they are all published before 2004, and many are not of English origin.

What is the goal of FOSS?

I'm unbiased towards the subject. I'm genuinely curious about how long-term FOSS ideology would work.

I'm using FOSS but I'd still consider myself a casual user. It seems like most FOSS I've seen is a free, buggy, alternative to mainstream software, which resolves a problem the user had.

From my perspective, (and do correct me if I'm wrong) FOSS doesnt seem sustainable. Everyone can contribute, but how do they make a living? My guess is they do other things for income. And what about the few contributors who do 90% of the work?

What if every software became FOSS? Who would put in the free labor to write the software to print a page, or show an image on screen, or create something more complex like a machine learning advanced AI software?

Would it simply be that everyone provides for each other? Everyone pitches in? What about people who have bills to pay? Would their bills be covered?

This concludes my right-before-bed psychology inquiry.

[5E/Homebrew] Novice Player looking for group

    Hello!

I'm a novice player looking for a group. I can build a character and play the game just fine, but I'm still learning and will have questions. I'm open to DND 5E or your homebrew game (I'll need time to learn it, and I will probably have lots of questions).

I'm currently free every night except Tuesday. I'm open to 1-shots, short campaign, or long campaign (fresh start or mid-join up to level 5). I'm in PST, so I can join anything from PST to EST.

I enjoy campaigns with some sandbox, but with a defined goal or mission. I enjoy DMs that can paint a picture in my mind. (These are not deal-breakers.)

I don't like DMs who charge through areas, or give us too much information: "If you were to look in that well, you'd see..." or "Are you going to check out this (unassuming) wall over here?" (Also not deal-breakers, but I will probably not start another campaign).

    Bonus points:

    • Zombies / Zombie homebrew
    • PVP stat checks, but not PVP combat (when it's tasteful and not abused)
    • Good improv and fun people

    Deal-breakers:

    • Unfair screen time or players controlling the campaign
    • Extreme themes (Rape, slavery, child murder/abuse)
    • Sex RP (I'm ok with PDA, romance, touching, etc. I'm not here for horny)
    • Inconsistent playtimes and/or Frequent missed sessions (I'm totally fine with adjusting by 1 hour before or after, I'd rather do that than cancel or shorten a session. I also understand that life happens, and each person has their reasons for missing a session. I don't like when we miss 4-6 weeks in a row because 1 or 2 people have stuff going on every session. I have a hard time catching up and getting back in character when that much time passes.)

I'm also open to niche themes:

    • Anthro / furry (or anything in-between)
    • Anime
    • Cyberpunk
    • etc.
