It's wonky though, they have to first post it comment in your community, then you can add them there. In the web ui it shows up after clicking the 3 dots on the comment/post

It's not just you. I've had better luck entering the full url manually ( http://lemmynsfw.com/c/[email protected] ) than trying to search. Still sometimes fails though.

There's also a risk that being too loose with any questionably legal content could lead to blocking or defederation of this community/server, both of which I'd like to avoid

Yeah, boejakka and others from the reddit lewdgames community have done great work cataloging these.
