What book(s) are you currently reading or listening? July 08
  • I finished Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. It was pretty enjoyable, each short story was well-contained and lasted only long enough to tell the story without being drawn out too much.

I am now reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It reminds me a bit of Hunger Games in the initial setup, but I’m hooked!

  • Since last time, I finished Severance by Ling Ma. I thought it was a good read - sorta reminded me of Catcher in the Rye due to its bleak tone & main character’s… unwillingness to take responsibility / control of their life? Overall, I’d recommend it; it’s pretty short.

I’m now reading Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. These are a collection of short stories that have been really fun!

  • I finally finished Death’s End (book 3 of the Three Body Problem series). I have to admit, I was pretty tired of this series by the end. I don’t think I’ll read the 4th? Overall, I like the ideas presented, but found the story to be underwhelming and sometimes boring.

I just started Severance by Ling Ma. I’ll try to remember to post an update in a future thread when I finish!

  • Max Caulfield returns in Life is Strange: Double Exposure
  • I have been considering playing these… is there an actual recommendation on play order listed somewhere? I’m sure I could reverse engineer it from your tongue-in-cheek comment, but figured I’d ask since you seem familiar :)

  • I’ve been working my way through the Remembrance of Earth’s Past series (Three Body Problem books). I’m on Death’s End now.

Overall, I love the ideas explored by the series. I think the writing style isn’t really my jam. It’s a bit boring/slow in parts, almost “matter-of-fact” in its prose. I tend to prefer more descriptive, flowery writing. Granted, maybe some of that is due to being translated / cultural differences in writing style.

  • Cacio e pepe (Roman pasta with pepper and cheese)
  • My wife and I had the same issue when we started out. We’ve solved it two different ways.

Option 1: Use 3 parts pecorino romano, 1 part parmesano, mix in a bowl and then slowly add to pasta while vigorously stirring (pasta should be very hot still to melt cheese)

Option 2 (my personal preference): Combine a bit of cacio y pepe recipe with a bit of carbonara recipe :)

Mix your cheese with egg (we use 3 eggs + 1 yolk, 3oz pecorino romano, 1oz parm) until it’s a slurry. Add pepper to the mixture. Then add to pasta and stir vigorously.
