  • My nieces and nephews convinced me to get Snapchat, and it was fun entertaining them with the funny filters for about a week, but I noped out of that feature first thing. I ended up deleting the app after the novelty wore off for them because it also sent a ton of promotions, and even though I don't think it could see my contacts with the settings I had, it seemed like the type of app that would abruptly opt me into things without warning.

Also, even with just basic notifications enabled, it managed to send me ads and promotions every week.

    I really dislike Snapchat lol

  • I've never been convinced by the "Why worry about privacy if you have nothing to hide?" argument. It seems to me privacy is a virtue worth protecting in and of itself. I always think about the bathroom door argument. I want to shit in peace. No, I can't explain to you exactly why, but on some level the ability to do that has value in and of itself. I don't need someone breaking down the door and then demanding I explain myself, and telling me things like "it's not an issue" or "it's not like somebody wants to steal from your home."

Example: I love my husband, but I don't need to take out my phone and check if he's on his way home, or had to take the long way around because of roadwork, or had a bad day and has stopped by the dispensary. There's no way that's not creepy to me, sorry. Conversely, he doesn't need to know that I've been struggling with money lately, so I stopped by Walmart for those pretty flowers.

Also consider that by sharing your location data, you are sharing your data with a nefarious third party who is using that data for things like targeted advertising, and likely with state agencies that may not have your best interests in mind.

While I'm aware there is no way to be truly private online, I do believe this community is about people who are concerned about this and are not just rolling over while the attacks on our privacy advance. I am especially invested in privacy as a LGBT+ person whose country is rapidly descending into fascism. I am invested as a feminist who cares about women's rights to their own bodily autonomy and healthcare. I am invested as a transgender ally who wants trans kids and adults to receive the acceptance and care that they need. Even if I didn't personally feel invested in matters of privacy (I do), I would hope that I'd pursue the trend nevertheless for the well-being of others.

  • Is this accurate? I don't know any young people in my family who wouldn't find it creepy to be cyberstalked

  • Firefox + uBlock Origin > Apps
  • I didn't realize for some reason that I could do this ayyy

  • Firefox + uBlock Origin > Apps
  • This is really great, thank you very much!

I like Jerboa, but I have two lemmy accounts, and this will be a great improvement for browsing my second account.

  • Can I block a particular domain?
  • I have two lemmy accounts, but I find myself using this one most often because beehaw blocks the really bad instances. I really wish they'd implement this feature because I'd like to block the dedicated porn ones as well.

Here's a link to the feature request: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2397#

  • Netflix Anti-Sharing in USA - It's Here
  • I unsubscribed and haven't had Netflix since June 18. I wasn't personally affected by their policy change since the only people who used the account were myself and my husband, but I canceled on principle. After years of declining selection and price increases for basic features, it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I have to say I don't miss it at all ... me hearties

Thank you for all of this

  • When an app asks for permissions, the OS should not only let you answer yes or no. Every category should have a "yes, but feed the app fake data" option.
  • This is why I use TrackMeNot on desktop, but I'm not sure it's available for Android, though there's probably a workaround

  • The obsession with EV range is all wrong
  • It's a sad fact that the rural midwest has become very car-centric, to the point that there are actual work duties requiring that type of travel

But I get it, because I've been in a similar position myself

  • The obsession with EV range is all wrong
  • It's true that we need more and better public transportation infrastructure in the rural midwestern US, but typically towns are within EV range. I'd much rather see resources being directed towards alternatives to personal vehicles. The status quo is inaccessible and, to be blunt, straight up discriminatory to certain demographics.

  • Facebook's Threads is so depressing
  • I'm glad I read this post because I certainly don't plan to visit the site.

Everything is bad, but a highlight for me is Ellen Degeneres posting "Welcome to Gay Twitter!" as if she is still relevant or respected by us LGBT+ people, and as if a site created by The Zuck to appeal to the type of person who thinks Miracle Whip is too spicy could ever be "gay" anything.

  • Could Ben and Jerry’s go down like Bud light, or is their ice cream too darn delicious?
  • They also pulled support for Dylan Mulvaney and anything LGBT+

    That whole arc feels bad

  • Nobody wants to work anymore 😭 rule
  • The term low-skilled labor is classist propaganda

But you are correct that this is how it's perceived through the warped lens of capitalism

UBI is not the answer. It's just liberals' way of propping up an inherently exploitative system

  • Nobody wants to work anymore 😭 rule
  • Also, gender studies is obviously a field we should be supporting more, given the prevalence of sexism in society and how many people are completely ignorant about the nature of gender

  • Nobody wants to work anymore 😭 rule
  • Also, "flip burgers" is a bad description of how hard it is to actually work in food service

You just know someone with a two-stall garage and boat who's always had things handed to them came up with that shit
