A quick survey to assess search behaviour and domain extension awareness. Open to everyone who knows how to use the internet.

Search Behaviour & Domain Extensions

Hi all!

I'm trying to gain an understanding of how people search and find websites nowadays, with a short foray into domain extensions.

Here's the survey. It's only 7 short questions, shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Thank you!

Quick links in Google Docs?

Hi all,

I'm trying to add quick links in a Google Doc to another Google Doc on the same account. Notion does this easily by typing @DocNameHere, and it magically works. Is there a function like this? I'm getting tired of going to the Doc I want to link, hitting Share, copying the link, back to the Doc I was working in, paste. There has to be an easier way.

Thanks!

Lore is an award-winning, critically-acclaimed podcast about true life scary stories. Lore exposes the darker side of history, exploring the creatures, people, and places of our wildest nightmares, and has been adapted for television by Amazon, as well as published as a three-book set called The World of Lore by Penguin Random House.

Each episode examines a new dark historical tale in a modern campfire experience. With more than 33,500 5-star reviews on Apple Podcasts and over 415-million listens, that's clearly a good thing.

New episodes are released every two weeks, on Mondays.

Qwant - The European search engine that respects your privacy
  • @kindenough I'm currently using the Duckduckgo browser for 95% of my online stuff. Sadly it doesn't work with a lot of payment sites, so it's back to Chrome for that (I know Firefox has more privacy, I just never really got into it).

I also found Startpage recently, but they went the way of Qwant as well https://restoreprivacy.com/startpage-system1-privacy-one-group

    Have a good weekend too!

Turns out, the existence of Mannish Women goes back far further than our modern discussions about gender. Starting in the mid 19th century, women not only dressed in masculine clothing, but acting, speaking, and living in mannish ways, became a concern. A growing trend to embrace the fashion styles of tailored suits brought about mannish fashion in the 1890s. The "new woman" picked all of this up and added bicycles to the mix. Sometimes mannish women stood with suffrage movements and political efforts, tying together our modern image of the very un-feminine suffragette. These women weren't always seen as ideal during the Victorian or Edwardian eras, but they persisted none-the-less. Even when "science" was being used against them or concerns over the end of society were put forward. For many, it was a simpler and more practical way of dressing. Others saw it as a completely different lifestyle and worked to throw off the expectations that had been placed on them. Embraced by a number of famous sapphic women of the early 20th century, it likely had a hand in creating the butch lesbian of today. Simply put, mannish women have been around for far longer than we realize, and the concerns over them really haven't changed in 150 years. What are your favourite slow and complicated recipes?

There loads of recipes online on how to get dinner on the table in 30 seconds or less, but what are your slow and complicated favourites? Sauce that needs to simmer for two days? Low and slow braises? Pizza sourdough that rests for 5 days? What have we got here? 😬

How to get userscripts on duckduckgo browser?

I'm trying to move from Chrome to Duckduckgo browser, but I'm missing some extensions, among which is Tampermonkey. Does anyone have an idea how to get it to work? Thanks!

EU to set out legal underpinnings for a digital euro
  • Could somebody maybe ELI5 this? I don't get it, I haven't used cash in over a decade, what's the difference with the digital euro and... Normal non-cash transactions? Alternatively, how will this screw us over and make things more expensive? Thanks!

  • The Handmaid's Tale - meh?
  • You make a good point, abuse of women is normalised. I think in this particular case (book vs show), the show was a lot more visceral, whereas in my opinion it was kinda of 'glossed over' in the book. It might be part of the writing style - I usually read books in first person, so it's like you are the character. This story was written so detached, I didn't feel much for anyone.

  • Unofficial Subreddit Migration List (Lemmy, Kbin)
  • There's a kbin userstyle for PC (do they exist for mobile?) that gives you a sidebar of your subscribed magazines that groups them from different instances! You still have to find them first though.

  • [F20] I have adhd and I pick up and drop hobbies weekly to monthly. For this reason, I cannot find a career path I am actually interested in. How can I pick a career path??
  • To give a concrete example of a job* where you're doing all the things all the time (at least in my experience) is office manager at a start up company. It doesn't sound glorious, but it's super varied!

I currently do, among things I'll forget to mention :

    • invoicing and payments
    • basic accounting
    • hr
    • day to day office running (making sure we have supplies, watering the plants, organising lunch, answering operational questions)
    • set up and maintain the company knowledge database and teach people how to use it
    • same for client database
    • event planning (fairs, team building, company parties)
    • organise courses and learnings
    • research
    • agenda keeping for the CEO
    • man the phone
    • random things that you can't really pin down like remind people to clean their desk (we don't have a cleaning service), run to the supermarket because it's hot and the boss is buying us ice cream, give info to new employees moving to the country on where to buy the best coffee)

It's never boring and also not stressful (for me, I thrive on organising thing).

*I don't know if this is a career. Personally I just want to go to work, work, go home and get paid to have money to do the things I like. I don't need fancy new title or promotions that come with more responsibilities and stress.

    The Handmaid's Tale - meh?

I read the Handmaid's Tale yesterday, finally. I'm disappointed. I did not like the writing style at all, there was no real story, just descriptions. And then it just ended. No conclusion or anything.

My best guess it's because the TV show was so intense and well made (at least the earlier seasons), and the book was... Not? Episodes would stay with me for days, but I'm struggling to recall the book already.

Maybe the book is supposed to be unsatisfying to go with the theme. Nothing much happened after Gilead was created, every day just kinda goes by. Sure there was some torture and death, but... Eh.

Maybe I was expecting too much after all the praise it got. It's my first Atwood book, and way way outside of my usual genre (fantasy, scifi, horror).

What did you all think of it?

What would be the best way to protect a room from unwated visitors in a low-tech fantasy world?
  • Boobytraps. Rumours about a curse/ghosts/entry fee. Pretend there's something boring in there. Allow entry, but make the process the full force of German bureaucracy (you need to file form A on a blood moon, to get form A, you need document B2, no not that one the green one, you can get it from Location C but that's only open once a month for half an hour, and if you don't wear pink they won't help you).

  • How do you stay interested in something for a long time?
  • Have more than one interest/hobby! I can't imagine doing the same for months on end with no alternative. I naturally gravitate to a monthly rotation (not consciously, just kinda happens) of high interest in something, and then there's a few things I do whenever (read a book when I have a few minutes here or there, do some cross stitching while watching my husband play a game, etc).
