Price of solar dropped 89% in ten years
  • At some point decades from now maybe? I still think nuclear and fusion research are important for human civilization, I just think it's stupid to waste money on building power plants using nuclear technology in its current state.

  • Price of solar dropped 89% in ten years
  • The reason we don't build nuclear power plants anymore (including small modular), is because they're insanely expensive, produce only a small amount of power compared to you can produce with renewables, and always come with cost overruns. Nuclear power is the techsploitation of of tbe 60's and 70's. Most governments look at the economics now and realize they can do solar plus storage for a fraction of the immediate and long term cost.

  • Germany set to double Ukraine military aid
  • If you're going to stop Russia from invading Ukraine why aren't you putting German troops in Ukraine? You're not helping your partner your killing Ukranians to weaken America's enemy. Tell me what the difference between Israel and Russia is and what they're doing to their smaller neighbours is. And then tell me why Germany condemns one atrocity but supports the other. It's not about supporting a partner and I think you're being naive or disingeneous if you think so.

  • Germany set to double Ukraine military aid
  • Germany is now running deficits to support a war that's already been decided. Ukraine is a corrupt country where many weapons given to it find their way onto the international black market. The standard of living in Germany is getting worse. Using deficit spending on a non-productive good like weapons to a foreign country that is corrupt will accelerate Germany's decline.

  • ownCloud Infinite Scale 4.0 is released!
  • The guy who founded owncloud (Frank), sold it to american venture capitalists. When Frank didn't like how the VCs were planning to enshittify Owncloud, he forked the project and moved it back to Germany from Boston. The American VCs saw this, realized they couldn't exploit the software anymore, so they sold Owncloud to a group of German businessmen. Ironically for Frank there are now two german owned non-VC backed cloud software based on the same code. But yeah they're taking different strategic paths for growth.

But Ukraine’s president fears that some of his country’s Western backers are losing faith

Donald Trump will “never” support Putin, says Volodymyr Zelensky

"There is no way of predicting how the millions of Ukrainian refugees in European countries would react to their country being abandoned. Ukrainians have generally “behaved well” and are “very grateful” to those who sheltered them. They will not forget that generosity. But it would not be a “good story” for Europe if it were to “drive these people into a corner”."

Have the US and NATO managed to box themselves in with the Ukraine war?

Good analysis of what options (or lack of) the west has with their commitment to killing Ukranians.

You're lying down, trying to sleep. Some part of your body is itchy, scratching will wake you up, not scratching will remain itchy. Do you scratch or wait for the itch to go away?

I have this issue often. I know if I scratch, it will wake me up and take longer to sleep because of my body movement. If I don't scratch, my mind only focuses on the itch. Sometimes I'll wait 5 minutes for the scratch to go away and then I just cave and start scratching any minor itch I have on my body. Has anyone just not moved and let the itch subside or does everyone scratch?

How hard would it be to implement an emoji reaction system (like Telegram) instead of Up or Downvotes?

I recently read a funny comment and wanted to give it the 😂 reaction like I would on a Telegram post, but upvoted instead. Reddit had upvoting downvoting but wondering if Lemmy, being an open source innovative software, should evolve past the upvote downvote and allow for a wide range of emoji reactions to a post.

Does anyone in Malaysia talk about the film "Entrapment"?

This movie came out in 1998 - there's a very famous scene where they're planning a heist at the Petronas towers. I've visited Malaysia and I still think about that movie.

Do people in Malaysia have common knowledge about that film at all, or is it like a meh reference.

For context, there's a film called Canadian Bacon that most Canadians over a certain age are aware of.

Self-hosted version of Notion called Affine.Pro will have docker released at the end of the month

    affine.pro AFFiNE 0.7.0 Preview - Launch week - day 5/5 | AFFiNE

Discover the power of AFFiNE, the ultimate alternative to Notion, Miro, and Monday. This article introduces the latest AFFiNE 0.7.0 Preview, unveiling an upcoming feature: AFFiNE Cloud.

    AFFiNE 0.7.0 Preview - Launch week - day 5/5 | AFFiNE

I'm excited about this MPL licensed tool and wanted to share; it's aiming to be a replacement to Notion, but self-hosted. It's not as feature rich (still in Beta) but it's a modern KMS/Collaboration tool that's looks to be on par with other proprietary options in the market. They seem to have some sort of capital backing because they have a team working on development.

My concern is how the pricing model will work and what features they will lock. They say that it will be free to self-host, but I feel like they will lock some features (most definitely their cloud service.) But if they only lock cloud hosting but allow self-hosting it will be pretty amazing for the self-hosting community.

    Sweden in NATO? Maybe not

thehill.com Ukraine, Sweden, Turkey and NATO: It ain’t over till it’s over

Should the EU backslide on Turkish entry, Erdogan could well renege on his commitment to support Swedish accession to NATO.

Ukraine, Sweden, Turkey and NATO: It ain’t over till it’s over

There was a post from a mass media site the other day saying Turkey was approving Sweden to join NATO. This turned out to be a bit of wishful thinking.

    Demon Slayer Season 4

Just finished it. I like this show the comedy is pretty amazing and also it gets pretty emotional too without too much backstory. I did like the more backstory of the demons in seasons 2 and 3. I thought the humanizing of them gave an interesting perspective.

Looking forward to season 5, does anyone know the release date?

What would you consider your political ideology to be?

I'm just curious for the new or existing people? Lemmy.ml has taken a hard turn to the right since the reddit exodus. There's been a lot of pro-imperialist propaganda being posted on world news, and a lot less diversity of opinion. It feels more neoliberal and neo-con to me.

Does anyone want to share what their political leanings are?

I'll start; I'm anti-imperialist pro-state regulated capitalism. I believe we should have usage based taxes (toll roads, carbon tax) and luxury taxes, and I disagree with wealth taxes for people with less than $250 million. The state should spend more money on consumer protection in all industries (environment, health, finance, etc.) I believe in multipolarity vs. US hegemony.

    Featured Post of news sources?

I see like reddit this community is mostly western mainstream media news sources.

Unlike reddit this site doesn't have to ban alternative news sources or alternative opinions. Most people get their news from search engines that feature western mainstream media news sources.

I would like to help create a sticky thread that lists out all the available English media news sources and categorize them based on their geography and political ideology. I think this would help people discover new sources of news, while keeping in mind the underlying intent of how news is being reported.
