Why? Are we not doing enough?
  • Decentralization isn't left wing or right wing, that's just a moronic analysis. Decentralization has a wide appeal but unless it gets simplified and standardized it will never become adopted by the mainstream. Places like Lemmy which are littered with gatekeepers like you doom this place to forever being a niche. If this place ever hopes of rivaling reddit, it needs to appeal to more than political extremists and tech nerds

  • Why? Are we not doing enough?
  • There are few things the developers could do. For example, they could make the platform easier to use. Many people don't even reach this place because they're not that tech savvy or simple don't care enough to figure it out. It's much easier for them to just create an account and get started on Reddit or elsewhere. This leaves extremists with nowhere else to go and tech bros... which are the two groups that dominate this place. The process of getting on board and finding instances/communities needs to be easier. There needs to be something like centralized site/app that is easily accessible and shows all the different instances and communities in one place.

  • Why? Are we not doing enough?
  • This is why Lemmy will never be anything more than tiny a niche platform. It's a place for the far left by the far left. There's nothing here in place for anybody else. I don't just mean politics wise, I mean everything. There's nothing for fandoms, shows, movies, sports, or anything really. You have to be privacy/tech nerd or some left wing extremist to really enjoy this place more than Reddit. Since the portion of the population that this platform is trying to appeal to is extremely small, this platform will always be small. There's little to not attempts by the devs or the community to make this place appeal to everybody else.

  • Defederation from Lemmygrad.ml
  • Marxists are the bane of this site. I understand that the developers are Marxist and so this always be a persistent issue, but you have to understand one way or another that there's a reason why Marxists aren't welcome in most places. There is a reason why people all around the world despise them and it isn't because they're just immature or annoying.

Even if ignore all the horrific history that happened under Marxism and the implications of supporting that, and focus exclusively on modern Marxists on this site, you'll immediately see some of the most vile shit on the internet. You've got crime and violence advocacy, dictator apologizers, tyrannical regime support, terrorist sympathizing, victim blaming, antisemitism, genocide denial, disgusting amounts of hate, conspiracy theories, literal propaganda, and all of this is packaged with zero amounts of decency. Marxists on the internet somehow manage to be worse than /pol/ in toxicity, and /pol/ is notorious for how toxic it is.

I personally have a high tolerance for bullshit views. I am willing to engage with Marxists if they appear to at least have a moral compass, but the reality is that most of them don't. They really are either mind numbingly stupid or straight up evil, and a lot of cases it's both. Marxists are in the same tier of trash as neo nazis and theocrats. Equally as stupid, equally as violent, equally as ignorant, equally as hateful, and equally as tyrannical. They are the lowest of the low. This was something that was supposed to happen a looooong time ago. I'm surprised it took this long for this instance to defederate, but better late than never.

  • Paradox of tolerance
  • This is such a stupid perspective because it's literally just guilt by association. No, sitting down with someone with vile views does not make you endorse, condone, or otherwise suppoer those vile views.

  • Five years after killing a journalist in cold blood, Saudi Arabia is stronger than ever
  • This is a brain dead take because it's just guilt by association. Having diplomatic relations with countries around the world doesn't mean that you endorse or support their government. A country that's ruled by a shitty ideology like Fascism or Marxism is something to be weary of, but these countries do in fact exist and they do play a role in global politics and economics. For example, the UAE and Israel normalizing relations doesn't mean that they support each other, but they recognize each other's influence and understand that diplomacy and cooperation is more beneficial and productive than shunning each other.

I mean we tried to sanction, shun, and ignore authoritarian countries like Cuba and North Korea for decades... How has that worked out for us? My point is that we can't cut relations with every country we don't like. There are situations where that should be the case and there are definitely arguments for us to be more cautious when dealing with these types of regimes, but we can't cut ourselves off from the vast majority of the world (which is authoritarian) nor can we force countries to adopt our ways (we tried with Iraq and Afghanistan, it didn't work).

  • Or just anyone who likes the convenience
  • YES! Marxism is definitely solution. It generates weal... uh uhhh it is sustain... uh uhhh it is efficie... uhhh it is innova... uh uhhh it wor... uhhhhhh wait, Marxist doesn't do shit because it's failed ideology. Cry harder tankie.

  • xkcd #2832: Urban Planning Opinion Progression
  • I'm not talking about the post, I'm talking about the anti-car movement in general. There are a lot of people who really do boil down their worldview to "car bad, no car good" without any regard to nuance or context. The number of these people is increasing and they're annoying

  • Don't ask
  • Or the invasion of Vietnam... Or the annexation of Tibet... Or the bullying of Southeast Asian countries... Or the great leap forward... Or the communist land reforms... Or the anti counterrevolutionary campaigns

The CCP leaves you no end of really good options to pick here.

  • xkcd #2832: Urban Planning Opinion Progression
  • Are you an idiot? I'm criticizing the mentality of the movement. The anti car movement is heading head first into extremism by removing nuance and only viewing things in black and white. Your comment actually demonstrates my point.

  • xkcd #2832: Urban Planning Opinion Progression
  • This anti-car shit is starting to become another brainless cult. The issue with North American urban planning was never with the cars themselves, but rather with our over reliance on them. Bike paths, public transport, better walkability, and mixed zoning are all great things but cars are still very useful tools. Banning them entirely will cause more problems then it will solve.

  • Listen here, kulak...
  • The US > literal any socialist state, and it's not even close. The US is so far above any socialist state past and present that it's comical when brain damaged Marxists try to compare the two and think it's a gotcha for them. No, despite all its flaws, the US is objectively a great country, and that's largely because it's a liberal democracy. What's funny is that it's not even the best liberal democracy, there are others that are better. But even a mediocre liberal democracy is better than anything Marxist. Hell, even a bad liberal democracies are better than anything Marxist. I'd rather live in modern day Botswana or Peru any day of the week over modern day Cuba or any time during the Soviet Union.
