Fury 325 - Engineering Analysis and Response
  • Interesting analysis, it does make you wonder why the support was shaped that way at all.

  • Up to 85 credits, having a great time this season!
  • really feels like BGW is coasting on the "most beautiful park" tagline meanwhile they didn't theme or landscape Pantheon like, at all...

  • Favorite kind of coaster?
  • I really love hypercoasters from Intamin and B&M, and B&M inverts. Sustained floater is definitely my favorite type of ride force

  • What's everyone anticipating most this coaster season?
  • Finally getting on Pantheon was what I was most looking forward to this season. I think it's a better ride than Velocicoaster disregarding theming. Unfortunately the operations were pretty bad when I was there, either slow two-train ops, or agonizing one-train ops

  • Are you able to physically relax your body when you go on rides?
  • It depends on the ride. On something smooth and comfortable like a B&M hyper I can definitely relax. For example, Candymonium at Hersheypark is a great ride to practically ragdoll on. Also, putting hands up is a good start even if you're tensed up. When you realize on some level that holding on isn't doing anything but letting you tense your muscles unnecessarily you'll start to feel more freedom on rides. Also, as you become more familiar with ride forces, you can better predict how upcoming elements will feel and you can brace for them in a more relaxed way, rather than trying to stay totally rigid in your seat

Not a coaster, but on an S&S screamin' swing I notice that I tense up totally involuntarily. Something to do with the amount of airtime and the feeling of the restraint. It really depends on the ride.

  • Up to 85 credits, having a great time this season!

So far this summer I've gone to Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Hersheypark and Disney World, which has brought my count up to 85. New ones for this season were:

    • i305
    • Twisted Timbers
    • Reptilian (formerly avalanche)
    • Grizzly
    • Anaconda
    • Pantheon
    • DarKoaster
    • Wildcat's Revenge
    • Tron Lightcycle Run
    • Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
    • Space Mountain (Alpha track)

For immersive rides, while I really loved Cosmic Rewind and Tron (though it was just OK during the day, the night ride makes it 10x better) neither beat out Hagrid's for me.

For conventional coasters, I was glad that i305 lived up to the hype, the camelbacks on Twisted Timbers were nuts, and Wildcat's revenge was completely awesome in every row I tried.

Pantheon was an excellent ride, but pretty shaky operations really made the experience unpleasant. With two trains it was constantly stacking or loading full trains from quick queue, and most of the time it was running a single train.

    DarKoaster was mid.

PatientGamers appreciation post + my experiences with playing "backlog" games
  • I played assassin's Creed 2 and Dishonored, which have been in my backlog for ages. The Steam deck has really rekindled my love of PC gaming

  • How many steam deck folks are here and what are you playing?
  • Just finished Dishonored and now I'm on to Dishonored 2

  • Katamari Damacy and Katamari Damacy 2
  • Katamari is just such a gem of a game. Totally novel concept, amazing presentation, lots of replayability. Really hard to follow up on that

  • Suggestions for slightly older AAA games for Steam Deck?
  • I just played through Dishonored, which worked great! Also Assassin's Creed 2 was a fun one to finally finish from the backlog. It was the first game I completed on the steam deck and enjoyed messing around with configuring the controls to take advantage of the touchpads (used the left one to select from the weapon wheel)

  • Say hello to Chester and Phoebe!

We love our rabbits, Chester (brown) is very laid back, and Phoebe (REW) is more feisty. She likes to pretend that she's tough by grunting at everything and everyone, but she melts for pets

Tobyn Jacobs creates giant paper cutouts

This video was a total rollercoaster ride. I started watching expecting the usual youtube cringe commentary, but wound up with a pretty compelling story of a guy who just really enjoys making art, and his family who supports him

  • Where is Phantom Hourglass? I loved that game!

  • What open source project(s) are you working on?
  • I've started contributing to logseq, and I hope to start making contributions to castopod

Both are projects that I'm actively using, and I want to help them improve!

  • Which distro has the best GUI in your opinion?
  • I'm pretty sure KDE neon is only meant for testing KDE applications and so isn't guaranteed to be stable with anything but those packages. Other distros should be maintained with more general-purpose use in mind

  • Which programming languages do you use?
  • For work I currently use C and python mainly, and for some personal projects I've been using python backends with JS/Vue frontends.

I really enjoy Python, but as I use it more I've found the quality of the docs to be an impediment. They're hard to reference quickly.

I really want to start using Rust, but it's not really applicable to the kinds of projects I'm currently working on. I've started picking up some Clojure and PHP for two open source projects that I've started contributing to.

  • Anybody else knit or crochet?
  • I have dabbled with crocheting amigurumi, but it started to feel like it was giving me an RSI, so I haven't done it in a while

  • Castopod is a great way to self-host a podcast which interacts with the fediverse

    castopod.org Castopod | Your Free & Open-source Podcast Host

Castopod is a free and open-source hosting platform made for podcasters. Engage and interact with your audience whilst keeping control over your content.

Castopod | Your Free & Open-source Podcast Host

I spun up an instance on my personal server to host a podcast that my wife and her friend started, and it's been working great! Has a few rough edges, but it does everything one needs to inexpensively get a podcast out onto the internet without relying on a non-free hosting platform. Feel free to check out my wife's podcast at https://podcast.tworooms.online as an example.

welcome, influx of new users, to Beehaw!
  • Glad to have another excuse to drop a walled-garden platform. After a few months my mastodon feed has become more engaging than my twitter ever was, and I'm looking forward to joining some communities of excellent people here!
