Nexus mods want feedback from Linux / Steam Deck users on their new cross-platform app
  • I've been fortunate that the main games I want mods for, support it rather seamlessly on linux. R2modman for Lethal Company and other unity games, and Mod.io for Deep Rock Galactic.

  • www.gamingonlinux.com Nexus mods want feedback from Linux / Steam Deck users on their new cross-platform app

I wrote about the brand new Nexus mods app before, as it's quite a promising and exciting development for the future of modding (especially for Linux and Steam Deck). And now, they want your feedback.

Nexus mods want feedback from Linux / Steam Deck users on their new cross-platform app

    > Yesterday, July 1st, they announced the Alpha release of this next-generation mod manager and their new Product Manager got in touch to mention they "would be really keen to get feedback from Linux users". So this is your chance to ensure Linux (and Steam Deck) finally become a first-class citizen for game modding.

    Headphone / Microphone Combo
  • Not a gaming headset, but I just use the Pixel bud A-series I got for free when I bought my phone. They work pretty well, and I haven't had complaints about mic quality.

  • Will anything dethrone the Steam Deck? Probably not -GamingonLinux
  • I do think that the future of handheld devices is ARM or RISC-V, but the software support isn't there yet and would severely limit what could be played.

  • It's heavily rumored that Microsoft is working on their own handheld, and it will be interesting to see how that shakes up the market. If microsoft just makes windows controller/handheld friendly, it will greatly improve all the windows handhelds.

However I strongly suspect that we'll instead see the microsoft handheld be locked down, only able to run microsoft store games. It'll still probably do better than all the other non-deck handhelds that way, but won't really be a handheld "PC" if locked down that way.

Third possibility is that Microsoft might do both, release and locked down handheld and release some lesser improvements for navigating windows with a controller. This outcome would make sense if they have different teams working on both at the same time.

www.gamingonlinux.com Will anything dethrone the Steam Deck? Probably not

While other vendors continually push out new handheld pc models, sticking similar internals into different shell designs and gradually bumping up RAM or the Processor, the Steam Deck just keeps selling like hot tasty cakes.

[Discussion] Double discussion this month, what games did you buy for your Deck during the Steam Sale, and what are you playing on Deck right now? - July 2024
  • I did, but I haven't actually watched it yet. I've been wanting to buy tunic/ow for years now.

  • Steam deck for a TV party game emulation machine?
  • I would assume it would work better, at least for that controller.

  • [Discussion] Double discussion this month, what games did you buy for your Deck during the Steam Sale, and what are you playing on Deck right now? - July 2024
  • That's what people keep telling me. It's been $6 on GoG for months now, but I really wanted it in steam instead. And thankfully, it finally went on sale for $6 on Steam as well.

  • Steam deck for a TV party game emulation machine?
  • I know the virtual pinball community frequently recommends steam decks to power their pinball cabinets. I would assume that means it's pretty decent compared to other cheap PC options.

  • Steam deck for a TV party game emulation machine?
  • Should work fine, although I found connecting 4 bluetooth controllers at once to the LCD deck didn't always work reliably. The OLED model has a better wireless chip, so this shouldn't be an issue. The OLED model also supports waking up when you turn on a controller, but this only works if the controller supports bluetooth low energy (BLE). Xbox controllers do, but if you're using a different controller you'll need to check if it supports it or not (if you want this feature).

Dock's have become much more reliable. The official dock is overly expensive imo, but it recently was updated to support CEC where the deck can turn the TV on and switch inputs to the Deck, which makes it a lot nicer for Docked play. I don't know if any of the cheaper 3rd party docks support CEC yet.

You mentioned switch emulation, but not all switch games run well. You'll need to check on the specific games you want to play.

When emulating, the Deck's built in controls will usually default to player 1. You can rearrange the controller order in both the quick-access-menu (on the deck press the ". . ." button, on other controllers hold the "home" button and press A), and in the steam input menu.

  • I had some friends who were huge into Kingdom Hearts growing up, so I'm kinda curious about playing it now that it's on Steam. However the numbering of the series makes it really unclear what games I need to play to experience the core story.

  • Bazzite 3.5 gets expanded handheld support (including Steam Deck OLED)

www.gamingonlinux.com Bazzite 3.5 gets updated NVIDIA drivers, expanded handheld support (including Steam Deck OLED)

Bazzite is one of the best options to get Linux on various gaming handhelds, and the 3.5.0 release is out now that has improvements pretty much everywhere with expanded hardware support.

Bazzite 3.5 gets updated NVIDIA drivers, expanded handheld support (including Steam Deck OLED)

Bazzite is a cool alternative to SteamOS, but it's only had partial support for the OLED Deck. Thankfully that seems to be fixed in the new release.

  • The new season of DRG has suckered me back in, and some more of my friends just bought it as well. I hope you have a good time with it, it's possibly my favorite game of all time.

  • Return of the Obra Dinn is on my list, but I haven't played it yet. I did play through Forgotten City earlier this year, and it was really good.

  • I bought Tunic and Crosscode.

I jumped straight into Tunic, and am having a great time. I recently finished Outer Wilds and was wanting another knowledge based progression game.

    • Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart (40% Off)

Frame generation is usually only beneficial if you already have a reasonably high fps, but the author of this article mentioned that it actually worked really well for him in Spiderman on Deck and let him hit 60fps.

Paramount Plus is getting yet another price hike
  • Do people actually pay for Paramount+? I figured people just got it for free with Walmart+.

  • The 8-Bit Guy: How Cathode Ray Tubes Work [18:32]
  • Now the question is who did it better, 8-bit guy or Technology Connections?

  • Girl, 15, speaks out after classmate made deepfake nudes of her and posted online
  • AI generated csam is still csam.

Idk, with real people the determination on if someone is underage is based on their age and not their physical appearance. There are people who look unnaturally young that could legally do porn, and underage people who look much older but aren't allowed. It's not about their appearance, but how old they are.

With drawn or AI-generated CSAM, how would you draw that line of what's fine and what's a major crime with lifelong repercussions? There's not an actual age to use, the images aren't real, so how do you determine the legal age? Do you do a physical developmental point scale and pick a value that's developed enough? Do you have a committee where they just say "yeah, looks kinda young to me" and convict someone for child pornography?

To be clear I'm not trying to defend these people, but it seems like trying to determine what counts legal/non-legal for fake images seems like a legal nightmare. I'm sure there are cases where this would be more clear cut (if they ai generate with a specific age, trying to do deep fakes of a specific person, etc), but a lot of it seems really murky when you try to imagine how to actually prosecute over it.

  • SteamOS 3.6.6 Preview for Steam Deck has fixes for ELDEN RING, system memory leak and more

  • www.gamingonlinux.com SteamOS 3.6.6 Preview for Steam Deck has fixes for ELDEN RING, system memory leak and more

Valve has launched another small update for the Steam Deck with SteamOS 3.6.6 Preview now available for testing which may be essential if you're playing ELDEN RING.

SteamOS 3.6.6 Preview for Steam Deck has fixes for ELDEN RING, system memory leak and more
    • Fixed a an issue with a rare session crash during early startup of ELDEN RING
    • Fixed a general issue affecting all units on 3.6, and OLED units on 3.5, causing a slow memory leak during gameplay
    • Fixed a DSP firmware crash with previous 3.6 versions that could result in internal sound disappearing until next reboot
    • Improved responsiveness of session restart in case of session crashes caused by certain GPU errors
    • Fixed an issue that could cause videos to stutter in titles such as BlazBlue Centralfiction

Some pretty good fixes. Unfortunately you'll need to be on the beta/preview channel to get them, but hopefully it won't be long before they come to stable.

New stable Steam update for Steam Deck - adds battery indicators for Bluetooth controls, ability to toggle Bluetooth wake on-off for individual devices, and more

www.gamingonlinux.com Steam Client updated with improvements for Steam Deck, Linux, VR and Steam Input

Lots and lots of improvements and bug fixes have arrived in the latest stable update to the Steam Client for Linux, macOS, Windows, VR and Steam Deck.

Steam Client updated with improvements for Steam Deck, Linux, VR and Steam Input

    Steam Deck specific changes:

    • Show battery information for connected Bluetooth devices under Settings->Bluetooth and in the Quick Access menu.
    • Added a per-device toggle to Settings->Bluetooth that controls whether a device is allowed to wake SteamDeck from sleep.
    • Fixed a bug that would cause the UI to show stale data for Bluetooth devices.
    • Fixed clickable screenshots in the post-game summary and library screenshot section not opening the screenshot dialog to the correct item.
    • The magnifier scale can now be configured in Settings->Display.

This update has replaced 3 different Decky plugins for me: Controller tools (for showing controller battery), BT wake control (for controlling what BLE devices wake the deck), and the Bluetooth plugin (used for quick connections to Bluetooth devices that don't automatically connect).

The update also has a lot of desktop changes, click through to the article to see them all.

God of War Ragnarok Has Been Announced for PC with FSR 3.1 - Steam Deck HQ

The company who's handling the port is the same company that ported the previous God of War. That one ran pretty well on the deck (other than a memory leak requiring a larger swap file in some cases), so I'm hoping this one will run acceptable with the addition of FSR.
