Chinese coast guard ram and puncture Philippine military boats in disputed shoal
  • As bad as Trump is, he isn't championing and encouraging extrajudicial killings (at least not yet) like Duterte. That is however something your average Filipino voters were drawn to and supported with thunderous applause.

  • And they say English is bad
  • Well, the Union of South Africa were participants in the war against Germany, so that's still a bit weird. Don't know about the affiliation of the magazine in question, but the support for joining the allies wasn't clear cut, but only a narrow majority among the ruling white class.

  • Fallout TV Show Could Now Last Five Seasons After ‘Immensely Surprising’ Popularity, Say Creators
  • It's interesting that people are saying that this is so faithful, considering that they totally messed up the history of the California region. >!The series basically took place in NCR, but they just lazily disregarded the whole rebuilt NCR civilization and turned it into the east coast Bethesda wasteland. So what, did the NCR collapse back into wasteland in a decade or so too? Give me a break.!<

  • TikTok's CEO is feeling the pressure and users are freaking out
  • I think it's ironic this is posted here on Lemmy, which is what it is today mainly thanks to users of another service freaking out over how they will manage without their API access to bullshit aggregated content mixed with astroturfing.

  • Blockchain: the wave of the future
  • I know of one use case that seems viable, there is a digital housing market service in my country (called Dias). It uses blockchain to verify transactions related to selling and buying houses. That includes proof of sales, ownership, bank transaction status etc. The blockchain is operated by all the major banks. Their incentive is that it increases the security of the transactions thanks to the immutable digital trail, and also the fact that no single entity owns the "database" so no entity can alter it, or skim service fees etc from the others.

  • Blockchain: the wave of the future
  • Why this hasn't been done is pretty baffling to me.

Because the blockchain needs an incentive. Who is going to be taking part in the blockchain if there is nothing in it for them? That's why these tokens are often tied to crypto currencies, as mining is the incentive.

  • We Asked A.I. to Create the Joker. It Generated a Copyrighted Image.
  • People are smart enough to understand the difference between someone copying for personal use and a billion dollar corporation copying to generate millions while laying off all the creative people. The latter is what these non-open-source AI companies are enabling - for profit too.

  • Piiri pieni pyörii. Thomas Puha perustaa Pelaaja-lehden, palkkaa sinne Pyykkösen. Puha menee Remedylle töihin viestintäpäälliköksi, Remedyn yksi omistajista on Sami Järvi.

  • Discovery Channel’s ‘Shark Week’ Is Packed With Misinformation and Junk Science Scientists watched 202 episodes and found them filled with unreliable information
  • What really started the whole "fi-sci" (fiction-science) on Discovery was Mythbusters. I know many people don't want to hear it as they loved the show, but it was often very unscientific, especially their methods and the hasty and often false conclusions they made from their scientifically invalid tests.

  • It's interesting debate to observe from my perspective as my native tongue has no different pronunciations for letters, they are always the same regardless of their placement in words. G is always pronounced the same, and so is P. (Spoiler: it's hard G and hard P).

This brought another thing in my mind about soft G. Let's take for example Gin, which is with soft G I believe (it's hard G here because there is only hard G). Then there is the acronym GT for Gin & Tonic. The question is, in English language countries, is the acronym pronounced jay-T instead of gee-T?

  • ‘My voice matters’: Felons vote at polls for first time after voting rights restored
  • While there is plenty of debate about abortion, its legality & justification, there is no such debate that I'm aware of about rape.

There actually is, but it is not on the same level. It's on the definition level, as in what constitutes as rape. And believe me, there are lots of people who will be in agreement that rape is a terrible act, but will also defend a rapist because the legal definition of rape doesn't match what they perceive as rape.

  • ‘My voice matters’: Felons vote at polls for first time after voting rights restored
  • There are people who don't respect the judgement or voice of people who have abortions, or provide them. The former probably ask about the latter "why should we allow them to vote" too. That just emphasizes the fact that personal feelings are not good enough reason to limit a right. The right to vote should be the basis. As a right it needs no justification, on the contrary, any limitations to it are the ones that need to be justified. And justified better than "I don't respect this and that".
