Just under 500 homes delivered in year one of the government's First Home Scheme

This is just shameful. Theres 60k + on the housing list, thousands more homeless and on the streets. The government is acting like 500 is an achievement.

Fairphone 5's key specs revealed by Geekbench
  • Does it have 3.5mm Headphone jack?

Does it have FM Radio support

Will it be supported for 5+ years

Those are the only features I want beyond the usual repairable, replaceable, FairTrade parts etc.

Also a shutter on the selfie camera or having the option to put a cover on it. The Fairphone 3 has a top bezel that allows enough space to get those cheap sliding camera covers on Amazon. The Fairphone 4 not having that is slightly annoying IMO. I do hope the 5 addresses this. Either bring back the upper bezel (which they won't) or have a physical shutter built in like how some webcams have.

    Minor grievances tbf but still

  • Just wanted to share this. Great video from a great channel that goes in depth about Irish geography.

Wanted to share something a bit different than the usual few news articles I post here. Let me know what ye think

  • Both for me I cancontinuously make a cracking sound with ankle if I twist my foot around in a circular motion. My knees only crack every few minutes though if I bend down and stand up again

  • Slackware turns 30 today
  • Cool to see.

I am curious though, does Slackware do anything that other Distros can't?

Is there a reason to choose it over say Debian or Fedora aside from it being around for so long and the nostalgia factor

  • What's the point of buying new phones every years?
  • The camera on the Fairphone 3 is only okay. But there is an upgraded camera module you can buy from Fairphone.

I'm not much of a photographer so it doesn't bother me. But if you take a lot of pictures, it's something to keep in mind.

  • What's the point of buying new phones every years?
  • Vanity, marketing and buying shit unnecessarily.

I have a Fairphone 3 that I got in January 2020. Its a great device. I want to using it daily for between 5 to 10 years. And I have no doubt it will do that.

Meanwhile my brother has bought 3 Samsung devices in that time. And each one still works fine. He doesn't need a new phone each time but he will still insist on it.

  • Teslas build quality has been hit or miss since they came on the market.

I will always respect them for showing people that electric cars can be viable and fun. But nowadays, I would never bring myself to buy one knowing that some of the profit is going towards that fucking imbicile who owns twitter.

While I'm not looking to get a new car rn. Down the road I'd like to consider something like a Toyota BZ4X. The first gen has a few issues that need to be ironed out. But a few years from now, I reckon itl be a great option

That or something like it from Honda. Those two brands are who I trust most in terms of reliablity and build quality if I'm going to make an investment in a new kind of car, I want it to be them.

  • Fairphone 3 gets 7 years of updates, besting every other Android OEM
  • Ive been using my Fairphone 3 every single day since January 2020. I did have a vibration motor wear out, but its replaceable so its fine. My battery is a bit iffy now. According to a battery scan app I use, its at 63% health. I'll be replacing that soon too since sometimes it will only charge up to a certain point etc. Still though, on any other phone, that would be a deal breaker, but since I can order a replacemt battery for like 25€, its not an issue.

Only other issue I have is sometimes the screen experiences ghost touches, where it will register a touch on the screen even when I'm not using it. Again, this will be fixed with a replacement later on.

I love my Fairphone and I strongly reccomend it for its repairablity alone. The sustainability and FairTrade aspects are just a bonus IMO.
