New COP28 draft deal stops short of fossil fuel 'phase out'

A rapid phase out of fossil fuels is the only way to avert the worst damages of climate change and nearly 30 years of COPs have so far failed to articulate this as a goal, let alone set binding targets for it, despite overwhelming evidence of its importance.

French court suspends ban on climate movement accused of ‘ecoterrorism’
  • Unless violence against innocents is being perpetrated or threatened, the terrorist label should not be used. Property damage against industrial polluters and non-violent civil disobedience should never be counted as terrorism. Frankly, at this point, this kind of action is arguably a moral imperative.

  • What’s driving sudden flare of solar energy and storage in Colorado? - The Colorado Sun

"Large [solar] projects across Colorado are being driven by the ongoing shift in the fundamental economics of energy toward cheaper renewables, experts say. Lucrative tax credits and grants from the Inflation Reduction Act pumped in accelerants." via The Colorado Sun

How many Lemmy users are non-technical background?
  • I’m a real estate advisor so definitely non-technical though I do consider myself more familiar with the workings of computers and most other tech than the average person. I’m familiar with the Linux command line at a basic level and have run Linux on my PCs before. I’m also somewhat concerned about online privacy and frustrated over how capitalism is largely destroying the best things about the internet, something which seems to have accelerated as of late..

  • "North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies are going vertical again. And yes, I needed to extend the y-axis."
  • I imagine you noticed this but that second citation (from your edit) has this at the top of the article:

Update August 9, 2020: Please be aware that this article was published in 2010 and that its content is no longer considered accurate. As it still gets regularly linked to from other websites, we will not delete or "unpublish" it. Instead, here is the link to a better take on this topic published by our late team member Andy Skuce in 2013: Global Warming: Not Reversible but Stoppable.

  • Billionaires aren't okay — for their mental health, time to drastically raise their taxes
  • Exactly. The higher taxes should all go to healthcare, education and housing for working class people. And the leftovers should simply become dividends to provide additional support to the neediest. Oh and if people have issues with ‘welfare checks make people lazy’ or some other BS that’s repeatedly been proven to be nothing more than racist neoliberal propaganda then use the rest to fund something like the green new deal and all the jobs that will create. Or incubators for worker co-ops which are not only more fair and democratic in terms of allocation of wealth but make this kind of exploitative elite profiteering impossible.

  • YSK to play around with different sorting methods on your lemmy feed.
  • I seem to prefer top 6 hours personally. It gives you the most updated stuff but has a short enough time period so that you can still check it a few times a day and likely get different posts assuming you are subbed to a good number of active communities.

  • YSK: You can use Libreddit instead of Reddit for more privacy and no ads (and no traffic/views for Reddit)
  • This, along with LibRedirect, is still great for when you are searching for something and a Reddit post comes up. Like the direction Reddit is taking or not (and I don’t which is largely why I’m here), there are still some genuinely informative and useful posts on the platform and if you’re not willing to completely foreclose on viewing those ever again this is a great way to do so.

  • Toyota claims battery with range of 745 miles, charges in 10 minutes
  • While it’s true that Toyota is pretty far behind other car manufacturers in pure battery EVs, they still have the best hybrid drivetrain around by miles and they have great plug-in hybrids. I just got a RAV4 Prime and I love it. It has around 40-50 miles of electric only range and then switches to hybrid mode if you drain the battery before recharging where it gets 60 MPG and can go over 500 miles on a tank. Honestly my commute is way less than 50 miles so I drive electric around 90% of the time. The only time I kick in the gas engine is for longer trips and especially on road trips it’s nice not to have to worry about finding charging stations and waiting an hour or two for a charge.

Many of my communities that I am subscribed to do now show any posts when I try to view the community page on the app. When I view the pages on the website posts do show up however.

Installing Chat GPT AI Herika mod for Skyrim on deck?

I recently came across this interesting mod that gives you an AI companion in Skyrim that you can actually speak to. Check out this video for a demo: https://youtu.be/AQq8M88s3BU

Does anyone know if it would be possible to install this AI Skyrim mod on the deck? Obviously these instructions are directed at a Windows install and I’m guessing especially with the mod needing to utilize other resources outside of the contained folder that proton creates for its emulation that it wouldn’t be but I’m just curious.

New Tech Demo Uses AI to Let You Converse with NPCs

I figured this would be coming to games within the next 3-5 years but the fact that there’s already a tech demo out is kinda crazy. It’s admittedly a little rough around the edges but still impressive.
