Picture of a thing, but what is the thing?

Sorry for the bad quality.

My grandfather had this in his office. He worked as a computer engineer so I initally thought it was a zoomed-in picture of a computer chip or something, but maybe it is something large.

He's not alive anymore so I can't ask him. If somebody can help me out, that would be great.

Would anyone like a free subscription (for one month) to the Expanding Dan, the fantastic Steely Dan newsletter? It seems I've got two left to give away.

Subscribers can access the archive, so for instance you can read the complete interview with the technician who erased the Second Arrangement tape: https://expandingdan.substack.com/p/steely-dan-second-arrangement-erased-interview

Best thread I've seen thus far on the issue of Meta joining the Fediverse
  • That's exactly the Meta we're talking about. The most likely explanation is that Facebook wants to compete with Twitter and/or Bluesky and is planning to build an app using the ActivityPub protocol, which is what sites like Mastodon and Lemmy use to communicate with each other. Basically the idea seems to be that Instagram users will be able to communicate with the rest of the Fediverse.

Two weeks ago, it turned out a couple of mods of the larger instances had had secret (!) meetings with Meta. In a reaction, a group of instances decided to start a pact to preemptively block Meta.

All this conversation about #Meta on #Fedi feels like the worst parts of geek culture. So technical, without understanding context or what strikes can actually do. My thoughts: Meta will make a great app for Fedi because it has more money to throw at the task. People will start using that because i...

How many lifers do you guys have and when did you start?
  • I live in the Netherlands and see about 150 different species of birds every year. That sounds like a lot, but even fifteen years of birding adds up to only about 270 species total. Perhaps this is because I never go somewhere to see a particular bird, I just go to nature reserves because they are beautiful. I have a small list of birds I very much would like to see, but I don't go out of my way to find them.

How the beehaw defederation affects us
  • On Mastodon there was this whole thing about users calling themselves Twitter refugees, and people expressing their displeasure with the term. It does feel a bit inappropriate to equite youself with actual refugees. We're just moving from website to another.
