I generally agree, but I do somewhat agree with Beehaw's decision as long as it is actually temporary. They say that they just don't have the moderation tools required to handle the influx of low quality posts from those instances. Considering the ballooning of active users on all 3 of those instances (Beehaw, lemmy.world, and sh.itjust.works) I could definitely believe that. Paring down the amount of potentially rule breaking posts until you have the tools necessary makes sense.

The idea that every instance can just cut ties for whatever reason, though, is scary for the reasons you have outlined.

You can search posts on lemmy using Google already. They are indexed as separate sites, so you may have to use "site:lemmy.ml" or "site:beehaw.org" in order to find a post. I do wonder if major search engines will try to handle federation more comprehensively in the future, though.

I'm excited to continue to have a community like this. Hearing fresh opinions on games that released like 10+ years ago is always engaging. And discovering games that got lost in the new release scramble is great.

I'm in a similar boat with an old HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF that was going to be binned at a previous job of mine. It has an i5-3470 and 8 GB of RAM running Windows 10 Pro. It only has a 500 GB internal HDD, so I have an external 6 TB hard drive plugged up to it. No USB 3.0 ports, though.

Similar thought process on the hardware upgrade side, too. It would be wonderful, but with pretty much just my household using it all I'm really missing out on is 4K transcoding.
