Calling all St. Louisans!
  • Well, I added "The Lou" for two reasons - 1) Some other person had started up a /c/saintlouis community (and let it dwindle) and I wanted this one to visibly stand out from that one in search results, and 2) I also started /c/missouri and named it "Missouri | The Show-Me State", so I wanted a nick name to go along with this one as well. I haven't heard anyone call it "St. Louie" in a hot minute, so I went with a newer one.

What do you think of using "Gateway to the West"? That's probably the most tried and true city nickname I know of.

  • Where'd you go to Highschool?
  • For the record, I'm not commenting on this only because I'm not going to doxx myself. 😉

Thank you to the Missouri Family Health Council for making this possible.”

    > Des Peres aldermen voted 5-0 Monday to give voters the option on Nov. 5, 2024, the first date allowable by Missouri law. Alderman James Osherow was absent.

    > The move was cheered by about 50 residents who have for months raised concerns over the dispensary’s proximity to a youth math tutoring center and that it could increase crime by becoming a target for burglaries.

    Calling all St. Louisans!
  • You do what you will, don't let me stop you. I never called anyone an outsider, but I also wouldn't have the hubris to start an online community on a growing social platform about a city I recently moved to, then tell people repeatedly how I don't know anything about the city and otherwise contribute very little to that sub.

  • Libraries say they never offered ‘obscene’ materials, but Ashcroft’s rule has them scrambling
  • It's infuriating that we're letting these christo-fascists determine how the rest of us are allowed to live our lives. I wonder what it will take for us to reach that "Have you no sense of decency?" moment with them. But of course they don't, because that would require a conscience.

  • St. Louis County town tows cars from driveways with expired tags
  • Now I know that we're at meme status when it comes to expired temp tags, but this seems a bit much. Where's the victim in that crime? Does it really warrant stealing someone's car from them? If the person couldn't afford the taxes in the first place, how do they expect them to afford to get it out of the impound and pay the taxes, when they can't drive to work? I suppose the answer is that they don't, and they just like ruining lives.

I wonder, will it change anything now that dealerships are required to collect taxes at time of sale? I guess that still won't affect personal sales.

  • Feedback on performance
  • Been doing alright so far. Haven't noticed any blips since late yesterday I believe.

    > When Nick Akers set out to buy a business in late 2021, his search process had a 24-month timeline attached to it. He figured he wouldn’t need that much time, hearing that those in a similar situation typically are successful around the year and a half mark.

    > “That’s exactly how mine panned out,” Akers said.

    > Akers in May wrapped up his acquisition search, closing on a purchase of Chesterfield-based IT managed services provider STL Communications Inc. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We have to do something!” It was a statement among many emotional pleas 8th Ward Alderwoman Cara Spencer made to her fellow St. Louis Alderman on Thursday.

STL Public Safety Committee takes up bill on open carry

    > It was the first time members of the Public Safety Committee got to hear and give comment on Spencer’s recent ordinance proposal, board bill 29. The bill aims to tackle the proliferation of guns in the city by requiring anyone who openly carries a gun in the city to have a permit or endorsement. > [...] > Spencer says in speaking with the city attorney, she feels confident this bill does not go against state laws so long as it is not infringing upon the rights of people to still own a gun without a permit. However, she plans to take out an existing part of the ordinance dealing with the confiscation of weapons if someone is found in violation of carrying openly without a permit. Instead, officers would temporarily remove the gun and safeguard it and have the opportunity to get it at a later time. > [...] > Other concerns raised by city leaders include whether this ordinance will disproportionally target communities of color, and if it would put officers in even more danger approaching those who are openly carrying a weapon.
