  • No worries. I used to do the same thing on KAT forums. I like helping people find stuff

  • How do you decide when to give up on a book?
  • This is something I've struggled with. I read a lot of trending books in high school like Hunger Games and Twilight but ended up reading 50 Shades of Grey to the end and it honestly turned me off of reading for a while

I'm not the fastest reader so it really seemed like I just wasted a lot of time

  • What to do with ISOs?
  • Should be similar on most Linux distros.

  • The Best Two-Factor Authentication App? (iOS)
  • Google Authenticator is good. The only downside can be keeping multiple phones so you have a backup. I don't know if there's something similar on iOS but on Android Aegis is an open source alternative that is compatible with Google Authenticator and lets you locally export your codes

  • What to do with ISOs?
  • Can you mount them? If so what does that look like?

  • Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?
  • I can't say I blame them when it comes to going with what's comfortable.

I used Windows and Linux while in school so it's what I got used to. Whenever I use MacOS I feel incredibly lost

  • What are some examples of your tastes changing as you got older?

I've started to really like just mustard and sauerkraut on my hotdogs and racing games over FPS because they're a little slower paced.

  • Many might be shocked at the controls. I do agree with the obvious point: "Why include a right analog if it cannot run any systems that would use it?"

I wonder if that's to make people think it's PSP compatible on first glance or if they've given legitimate thought into some people preferring a stick over a D pad or maybe even the homebrew community.

I like your post by the way. You have a decent amount of information and said what the system can likely run

  • skill
  • Can you tell us some fun facts or stories?

  • Is there a community that requests moderators?
  • It likely depends instance to instance due to how Lemmy is federated. You may want to try browsing some small communities that you enjoy and seeing if they want an extra mod.

I imagine a lot of the time they don't feel the need to actively looking for one just yet but if the community sees a surge in people that might change in a hurry

I haven't come across a general community for it though to answer your question

  • Now you print what I told you.
  • I saw a comment once that said they are like sharks in that they can smell fear.

  • What to do with a broken monitor?
  • Depending on your graphics card there seems to be several ways to crop the screen to your liking. I would look into those. I think there are several posts on Reddit about people going about that.

  • How to make AntennaPod work with Android Auto?
  • I am not sure if this is what you are after but you should be able to enable unknown sources and install it that way.

    https://forum.antennapod.org/t/android-auto-compatibility/175

  • Any suggestions on reviving an old ASUS laptop that shows zero signs of life.
  • I would check to make sure the wall adapter is the correct adapter for starters. It might seem obvious but a lot of people assume the barrel plug fitting is all that matters. It should be pretty easy to find the voltage and amperage you need.

Other than that I would try to open it up or research the model and common issues. A leaking capacitor for example can eat away traces on a board.

  • Does anyone have tips for getting corroded batteries out of flashlights?
  • As in residue or entire batteries? Because the latter is where I am at

  • NSFW
Hey, I'm a moderator from Reddit. If anyone wants to ask me what moderating a NSFW sub is like, ask away! :D
  • How involved is the moderation process? Have you ever had to escalate things beyond your community?

  • Spec Ops: The Line doesn't need a remaster
  • Yeah. Would be nice for those of us that never got to try out the online mode. I also don't think it's available on Playstation past the PS3

  • Do you consider AI art “OC” ?
  • I really think it comes down to the individual. I personally think that Aldous Huxley's book Brave New World was likely derived at least partially from the book We by Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin but both Aldous Huxley and my 10th grade English teacher would disagree. I don't think it's wrong to take someone else's work and add upon it in a way you view beneficial. I view it as a natural evolution if anything and if it gives someone something to enjoy or makes the creative processes a little easier I'm all for it.

  • And then comes the wonderful realm of the BSDs and the OpenSolaris derivatives
  • Yeah I mean I'm not talking about ReactOS. It's hard to measure the amount of malware per market share.

I imagine it's weighted unevenly dependent on it's user base and target demographic.

  • And then comes the wonderful realm of the BSDs and the OpenSolaris derivatives
  • I agree but I feel like the obscurity aspect faded out with the I'm a Mac and I'm a PC ads

  • Can someone tell me why the Analogue Pocket was so popular and if it is still popular?

I feel like I heard a lot about it a year ago during its release but I haven't heard anything about it in a while.

I get that it can play cartridges which is neat but is the accuracy of emulators these days that far off? Even if that is the case it seemed like a lot of people were hyping up the Analogue Pocket's jailbreak and ability to play games off of an SD card.

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts and if there have been any developments in the community.

Does anyone have tips for getting corroded batteries out of flashlights?

I imagine a lot of flashlight enthusiasts have death with this. I've found it's less an issue with D cell batteries and more AA and AAA.

What's an interesting story from Christmas you have?

My family did secret Santa every year with a $20 limit so it was typically gag gifts. One year a family member was sick on Christmas so we just left our gifts piled up in a closet.

None of the gifts had tags because it was all supposed to be anonymous so when we handed out gifts the following year my great grandma ended up unwrapping a box of noodles shaped like penises.

What console versions of the Sims did you play and what did you think of them?

I played all the GBA games as a kid because I was dumb and thought it would be somewhat similar to the PC release. I still had a lot of fun with them. I really enjoy the quirkiness of them.

If I had to rate them it would be

    1. Urbz

    2. Bustin Out

    3. The Sims 2

I played a bit of Urbz for the GameCube and I feel like it has to be the worst of all Sims console ports.

What tip should I be using to solder wires together?

Pretty basic question but I am struggling to find the words to get the correct search result. The soldering iron I bought came with very narrow tips that I think are supposed to be used for circuit boards and components.

When I attempt to solder lines from a USB cord together the line never gets warm enough.

I remember in the past soldering copper lines together from an appliance with no issue so I don't think I'm doing anything wrong in terms of technique but who knows?

How can I protect devices on my network from malware?

From my understanding you can run into issues when you have a combination of ports being forwarded and some other issue like SSH enabled on a Raspberry Pi with default credentials but I feel like I'm missing things or misunderstanding port forwarding.

I don't know if, for example, a computer connected to a network running a dated version of Windows is a risk simply because it is connected to the network. Even if it isn't being used for things such as web browsing.

I'm more concerned about remote threats versus local ones like someone having access to my WiFi password.

I'd highly recommend checking out PS3XPAD if you aren't a fan of PS3 controllers or need an extra controller

Coming from an Xbox 360 it took me a while to adjust to the stick placement and their convex tips so I was surprised to see that PS3XPAD allowed me to easily use a 360 controller. Since then I've even used Logitech controllers as well that share the same driver.

The only issue I've come across is with games that use montion controls. I went through the entirety of The Last of Us without charging my flashlight.

Unrelated but Nintendont (a program that allows you to play backed up GameCube games on your Wii) also allows you to do something similar and use PS3 (and many other controllers) on your system.

Is there anything I should know security-wise while using Usenet/NZBGet?

I wanted to give Usenet a try so I installed NZBGet and found a provider and indexer. That said I don't know if I should edit any security settings even if I don't have port forwarding enabled on my network. I've changed the default username and password and I'm connecting through a VPN but that's about it.

Real new to this so my concern is knowing enough to mess myself over.

Any other tips would be appreciated as well!

I was wondering why people pay for index sites until I tried looking myself for example.

How do you feel about bots automatically reposting content from Reddit onto Lemmy?

I sort by all and new and have seen a fair amount of posts from bots bringing over content from Reddit. A lot of it doesn't have much if any engagement on here and as far as I can tell even if there was it wouldn't cross back and forth between the two platforms.

The communities these bots are posting to seem to have a low amount of subscribers and with the flood of content it seems a bit like a ghost town. Almost like subscribing to the RSS feed of a subreddit.

I'm not up in arms about it. The posts are being made by only a couple of bots into subreddit specific communities (ex. AskReddit) and Lemmy gives you the ability to block communities so this isn't really showing up in my feed anymore.

The only possible issue I could see in the future is if Lemmy communities tried to link with a subreddit's. For example an instance's pc gaming community with /r/PCGaming.

I'm curious to hear how you feel about Reddit content automatically (or even manually) being posted here.

The possibility of remastered Fallout games and fan remakes

I found this post /r/FalloutFAQ a while back and thought it was rather interesting.

To summarize a lot of the post:

    • In an interview with The Guardian Todd Howard stated that he's happy with the level availability games have due to backwards compatibility and that he prefers games like the original Fallout to be played the way they were originally intended. Skyrim being remastered was a product of special circumstances.

    • A section talks about when Fallout fans thought Fallout 3 was going to be remastered in 2019 and the history of bad remasters

    • There has been a bit of debate about whether or not the source code for the classic Fallout titles was lost.

(TLDR) Essentially there doesn't seem to be much interest from Bethesda.

    Remakes:

Ceased development in 2019. Multiple YouTube videos are available showing off what was completed.

An attempt to recreate Fallout 2 in Fallout New Vegas. The mod author's VK page appears to have last been updated in April of 2022. The ModDB page was lasted updated in October 2017.

Designed to be an open-source version of Fallout Tactics

A remake of Fallout 3 in Fallout 4's engine. Was temporarily cancelled due to audio rights issues. Appears to still be under development with the release of their Fallout 4: Point Lookout mod in February of 2022. Their Discord may contain further information.

A remake of Fallout New Vegas in Fallout 4. I linked to the Nitter page instead of their Facebook/Twitter/Discord page so you can see their posts without logging in. The original web page linked in the Reddit post no longer works. Appears to still be in development.

    Notable mentions:

Tried to revise Fallout Tactics from the ground up to create a better overall experience and restore lost content. Last update was in August of 2016.

A well known mod that combines Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.

Ports of the original two Fallout games for modern operating systems (MacOS, Windows, Android, and the PS Vita).

fo2.exe is an Android port that is also available on the Google Play Store.

A recreation of Van Buren in Fallout 2's engine.

Another recreation of Van Buren but in the Unity engine.

Retcon Raider has a series of videos covering Van Buren's design documents if you are interested in seeing some early Fallout: NV design concepts

For those who don't know about Fallout Van Buren you can read more on the Fallout Wiki but it would have been the third mainline Fallout game. It was canceled when Interplay Entertainment went bankrupt in 2003. There was a tech demo released and several design documents. Multiple concepts from Van Buren ended up appearing in Fallout New Vegas.

There have been several attempts at remaking the game in various engines. The most well known project used to be known as Project Van Buren but goes by Revelation Blues now.

Clicking backspace occasionally gets rid of the space between the previous two words. Any idea what's going on?

For example clicking back space in "Any idea what's going on?" Caused it to read "Any idea what'sgoin". I've only noticed this with Jerboa.

    3

Where do you think the next Fallout game will be based?

And why do you think it was be based there?

I know this has been asked a thousand times on /r/Fallout but I'm curious what people here have to say. I also haven't played Fallout 76 so I imagine a lot of places were likely ruled out or hinted at

How much water do you think you drink in a day?

The blood donation lady asked me if I was hydrated and I said I think so. She asked how much I drank and was surprised to hear I usually drink 4L before noon
