★OFFICIAL DAILY★ Daily Q&A Thread June 18th/19th, 2023
  • I love https://darebee.com/ for all of their free body weight exercises. They have individual workouts and a bunch of programs that you can try. I personally like the programs so it’s less work for me having to pick out my workout everyday, plus some of them have fun rpg storylines.

  • Easy protein heavy food suggestions?
  • I’m not sure how you feel about the dairy industry, but Greek yogurt has been a life saver for me. I didn’t even really like yogurt before this, but it’s very much grown on me. I take chobani fruit on the bottom yogurts to work as breakfast everyday as I get the flats of them at Costco and they are very transportable (110cal, 11g protein) and at home I have fage 2% (120cal, 17g protein) with a splash of vanilla and either some fruit or a little drizzle of honey.

For non-dairy protein lentils are awesome. I like the brown lentils best, the ones you get when you pick up a pack just labeled “lentils.” You can do an easy lentil soup with just chicken broth, sautéed onion, celery, and carrot. Then just toss in a cup of lentils and a bay leaf and let it simmer for an hour. Or dahl is a very easy one pot dish that’s easy to batch cook. I use this recipe https://www.noracooks.com/red-lentil-dahl/ but let it simmer longer with my brown lentils.

For a snack, carrots and hummus is great, just be careful on portion sizes because the fat content in hummus is also high.

  • Alternative Calorie Counting Apps to MFP?
  • LoseIt! is the app I use. The free version has very good functionality. I pay for premium currently because I wanted to put food in future days and track protein, but you really don’t need to. I didn’t for several months. It’s a very intuitive interface and the way it does streaks and cutesy motivation things works really well for me. I also like the big calendar that the iOS version has because it helps me visualize my weekly calories, not just the daily version.

I agree with the other commenter about the database being somewhat questionable, you have to be a little discerning. Typically I look for entries that have other nutrition facts listed besides the calories. You can also filter for verified only. But it’s quite good for individual ingredients, so as long as you’re logging 1 tortilla, 2 eggs, etc rather than just “breakfast burrito” it shouldn’t be a problem, and that’s a more accurate method anyway. But I also have heard great things about chronometer.

  • Is it just me?
  • Beehaw has a strict no hate speech policy and the mods aren’t afraid to put their foot down when people are sort of toeing the line about being a terrible person. That’s my instance and I’m very proud of it and it’s mod team. Sounds like it would be a good fit for you, too. Also, even if you don’t get an account there, you may be happy hanging out on the communities they host. Here’s a link to the mods describing their philosophy. https://beehaw.org/post/107014

  • Pasta Primavera, my first attempt

In honor of @[email protected] and their beautiful pasta primavera a few days ago that inspired me to put it on the menu this week. It ended up being very tasty, if not terribly photogenic! Pretty easy for a weekday meal, too.

    Recipe loosely based on https://www.budgetbytes.com/pasta-primavera/

What are you cooking/eating this week?
  • I picked up a 3lb bag of frozen filets from Costco. Ended up being 6 USD/lb which isn’t bad at all considering ground beef is at least $4/lb. I was looking for something a little healthier, and fish cooks up really quickly. The lemon garlic one from last week turned out pretty well, picture below. The recipe also called for paprika and thyme, not sure I would add those in the future.

  • What are you cooking/eating this week?
  • Tomorrow is pasta primavera, inspired by another post on this community. Later in the week my boyfriend is making tater tot casserole with chicken bacon cheese sausage homemade by his family. Friday is blackened tilapia with roast potatoes and I’m roasting a chicken Sunday because it was on sale. I’ll probably do broth with the carcass sometime next week. We had originally been planning to enchiladas Sunday, but those got crowded out by the unexpected chicken.

  • iPhone subreddit starting protest early, going dark indefinitely
  • I don’t expect the duplication to be too much more of an issue here than Reddit. The only big difference is that duplicate forums can have the same name here. I mean, how many meme subreddits were there? At least for me on beehaw, when I search for communities it shows how many subscribers there are. In this period of rapid growth, it’s certainly a bit of a crapshoot and you may need to regularly search communities to see if any take off, but I expect in the next month or so, some communities will become large and their duplicates will pretty clearly die, just like with Reddit.

  • NPD: Benu Skull and Roses Crow, extra fine nib
  • Oh my goodness! I typically find Benu pens a tad too gaudy for my tastes, but that one is really lovely. Those details are lovely. And I think oxblood is a brilliant match.

How is it to write with? I haven’t ever used a pen body quite that shape. Is it comfortable to hold?
