2GB Fiber Opnsense Hardware

I accidentally cooked my current Opnsense router last night trying to shoehorn an M.2 2.5g nic into it. So I'm looking for recommendations for something new.

The now dead machine is an i5 Lenovo M920q with a Connect-x3 10g card and a USB3 2.5g nic.

I have 2 gig fiber service that's handed off on an RJ45 2.5g port. So I feel like that really limits my options.

Edit

After much research I came up with a couple different barebone options.

R86s (N100 and N305) H7-a (Pentium 8505) Cwwk (N100)

Ultimately the H7-a won as I could reuse the RAM and SSD out of my dead machine and it should be here decently quickly. I also found a 2.5gbe SFP for my switch so the lack of 10 gig wasn't a complete deal breaker.

The R86s would have been the perfect replacement, but I'm too impatient to wait on it to get here and it was on the expensive side.

  • The metadata structure and scrapers are all aimed at adult video. Although technically you can make your own, so maybe it could work for other things.

  • Best bang for the buck battery backup
  • I know it's not quite what you asked. But if you have a little DIY ability you could build a good UPS out of a 100ah LiFePO4 battery and inverter. I've seen a few youtube builds where the runtime beats out what you can get out of a regular UPS. And with less maintenance.

  • GAFAM removed successfully
  • I think the implication is that they don't use anything from any of those companies. I see icons for Bitwarden, Nextcloud, and Lemmy. So they're probably a big selfhoster.

  • Best/least expensive GPU for decent Plex transcoding?
  • While I agree with everyone that Quicksync is the best option, a Quadro P400 is also a viable option. You can get one off eBay for around $40. It's only 2 gigs of RAM, so you're limited to 2 or 3 transcodes at a time. But it's cheap and may even work in your Synology depending on what model you have.
