Has anyone been paintballing as a 2 at a open session?
  • I've been a few times over about 15 years or so. This was out in the woods, using gas-powered guns.

They've always been free sessions and they generally just allocate people on teams randomly, so there's no promise the people you go with will be on the same team or not.

It really is just luck of the draw for the most part. Some people get stuck in, others don't.

Don't bother wearing loads of layers - it won't make a difference when you get hit. You'll be better off making sure you're comfortable.

Plus, your mask is going to fog up, so the cooler you can stay, the less trouble you'll have with it.

No idea of that helps, but take it for what you will!

  • What was the main reason you left Reddit?
  • Their gross treatment of mods and developers.

I used to mostly lurk, occasionally comment and infrequently post, but I understand and appreciate the work mods and developers do.

Reddit is just another big company that's trying to get rich off free labour with no regard for the people it hurts along the way. Fuck em.

  • 'Historic' 15-year plan to boost NHS workforce
  • Yup. The opportunities to enter the service are there.

It's retention that's dismal. They learn the skills then take them elsewhere.

And I honestly don't blame them one bit. It's very, very taxing and important work that isn't recompensed properly.

  • [SpursOfficial] James Maddison Announced
  • They're all talented players who add something to our game, for sure, but I guess I just miss the days when we had Dembele in the middle, who you knew you could rely on to resist the press and not get muscled off the ball.

  • This is not for you (cit.)
  • I'm reading all the footnotes, although admittedly somewhat glossing over the ones which are purely citations, making reference to other books/magazines which may or may not even exist. I still try and read their titles though as they sometimes give a little insight to underlying themes.

The only thing I'm not doing it skipping about within the book itself, like where it says to check an appendix for more info - I figure I'll get to those bits in due course, and don't want to break-up the flow too much, or inadvertently lose my page 😅

Whether or not that's the "right" way to go about things, I couldn't say.

What I'm struggling with so far is that the language itself can be quite tricky in places (mostly the main body of text discussing the Navidson Record so far), and when Johnny's sprawling footnotes start getting a bit nonsensical. Neither points are huge issues - you just have to pay attention with the former, and roll with the latter - but they do have me re-reading the same sentence over again in places where I'm trying to keep up 😅

As I say, enjoying it so far, but you've got to really engage.

  • This is not for you (cit.)
  • I'm literally reading it for the first time at the moment - about 100 pages in.

So far it's very intriguing, and I'm sure all the best is yet to come. It's presentation and structure alone is compelling.

That being said, I'd be slow to recommend it so far. It's nigh impenetrable in some parts 😅

  • ELI5: Why do nuclear power plants have massive circular towers?
  • I'm not knowledgeable on these things but I believe what you're referring to are the cooling towers, no?

They're there to help maintain the temperature of the reaction in the core. If you don't keep the temperature down, it can start to runaway, which is what leads to a meltdown.

But as I say, that's mostly guesswork. I don't really know what I'm talking about.

  • sooo many updates, I love it, and cant decide
  • What's everyone's preference at the moment?

I've been using Jerboa since I migrated and it's been great.

Installed Liftoff today, but it seems less polished at the moment, though admittedly I've not yet had a chance to dive into the features properly.

    Haven't yet touched thunder.

  • How naive I was in that first campaign
  • I bought a gorgeous set of black metal dice with gold numbers, with a mindflayer theme.

Can't read them for shit when actually playing.

I then proceed to buy a big bag of about 8 individual, basic sets with nice big numbers. They usually end up getting shared out to the group each session now 😅

  • Have you ever returned to a game years later and had a very different experience, despite the game not changing significantly?
  • I adore Metal Gear Solid 2 when it released (and I still do), but a few years ago when I went back to it after having not touched it for years and years, it struck me just how choppy the flow of the game is, especially at the start of the Big Shell.

You're constantly interrupted by cutscenes and codec calls, almost every time you go through a door, and some of those cutscenes or codecs last for a very long time.

I don't mind it, given the story is interesting and the script is good (in my opinion, at least), but it really stuck out to me in a way it never had before. It takes a fair while before you're given somewhat free-reign without constant interruption (though you're never really THAT far from another cutscene in MGS2).
