For a limited time only, we are offering Proton Duo for $14.99/month with a one-year plan: that’s $60 in annual savings. This is a forever discount, so if you sign up for the promotion, you’ll keep this price forever.

Proton Duo includes:

  • 2 users with separate logins
  • 1 TB of storage to share + 15 GB of bonus storage every year
  • Full access to Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton Calendar, Proton Pass, and Proton VPN
  • Everything included in Proton Unlimited ($60 yearly savings compared to two separate subscriptions).

How to get started

  • Sign up for Proton Duo or upgrade your existing plan.
  • If your family member doesn't already have a Proton account, they can create one for free.
  • Invite your family member to your Proton Duo plan.

VPN DNS leak - DoH and network.trr.mode in Firefox

Some feedback regarding Proton VPN documentation and some confusion regarding Firefox DNS configuration:

https://protonvpn.com/support/browser-extensions#firefox says:

"By default, Firefox does not route DNS queries through the HTTPS connection to our VPN servers" and then is mentioned a workaround to fix it.

That suggest alarming thing, that ProtonVPN Firefox user has to do some custom workaround in order to be private (prevent a DNS leak).

On another hand, https://protonvpn.com/support/dns-leaks-privacy says:

"DNS queries are routed through the VPN tunnel to be resolved on our servers"

these statements are a bit confusing/contradicting (though Proton later explains that this latest statement does not apply on a browser extension VPN apps) and Proton further adds at https://protonvpn.com/support/dns-leaks-privacy/#dns-over-https that the DNS leak can happen also due to enabled DoH feature in web browser.

Solution: ProtonVPN browser extension should (if possible) warn user in case it fails to process DNS and as a result, it is leaked. Vote for this feature request

----

Another "issue" is with the above mentioned/linked workaround (here I am speaking only about Firefox), this workaround: go to "about:config into the URL bar and hit <enter>. At the warning, click Accept the risk and continue → search for network.trr.mode"

In my case I had this set that variable to 5 which means DoH "Off by choice", Proton in said tutorial suggest value 3 instead, which means (According to https://wiki.mozilla.org/Trusted_Recursive_Resolver#DNS-over-HTTPS_Prefs_in_Firefox ) "Only use TRR, never use the native resolver.".

This confuses me since it looks like an opposite to what i have now, while any DNS leak site:

https://www.dnsleaktest.com

https://ipleak.net

does NOT report leak in my case nor in case i set network.trr.mode to 3. A bit weird but i guess no big deal?

Thanks for your feedback in advance.

Proton VPN introduces new Anti-censorship features — Stealth for Windows, new servers, and disguise your VPN icon

from the team:

--------

Hi everyone,

It has become increasingly common for authoritarian governments to go beyond purely online technical measures to discourage or block VPN use. Certain countries have even begun demanding citizens hand over their smartphones for physical inspection. Protecting free speech and fighting censorship is a core part of our mission and we're committed to doing what we can to help users around the world.

With today’s announcement, we hope to give people the tools they need to bypass censorship and access a free and fair internet wherever they are:

  • Windows Stealth: Proton’s unique anti-censorship protocol, Stealth, comes to Windows, disguising VPN traffic as normal internet traffic, making it almost impossible to detect when someone is using a VPN: https://protonvpn.com/blog/stealth-vpn-protocol
  • New servers: in 12 countries among those at the bottom of the Freedom House Index and the Democracy Index
  • Discreet Icon: Android users can customize the Proton VPN app icon and name, and even disguise it to look like another unrelated application to protect users in authoritarian regimes where VPN users may be at risk.

Proton VPN's mission is to ensure freedom of speech and fight online censorship everywhere. Here’s how to get started with Proton VPN for free: https://protonvpn.com/free-vpn

Top blog posts June 2024

from the team:

------

Hi everyone,

We have a big month behind us, and in case you haven’t been on Reddit much this June, here are the highlights:

💜 To strengthen our commitment to you and our mission, Proton is transitioning towards a non-profit structure. Most companies are created to be sold, and they achieve that by placing profit above all other considerations. For most businesses providing “services” to the masses, the easiest way to profit has been to misuse user data and engage in surveillance capitalism to the detriment of society and democracy. At Proton, we have intentionally taken a different path to achieve a more difficult mission where people come before profits.

🔑 With the addition of macOS and Linux app, as well as the Safari browser extension, Proton Pass is now available across all major platforms.

☁️ We’ve added major new functionalities to ProtonDrive, most importantly the option to share files and folders directly with your recipients by entering their email and the long-awaited photo backup functionality on our iOS app.

Among online privacy news, you have been most interested in Google’s DMA compliance plan (spoiler: it’s a sham).

As usual, tips on what you need to pay attention to in order to protect your online privacy were some of the most widely read:

⌨️ how to prevent password spraying attacks

You can now secure your Proton Pass account with an extra password

from the team:

---------

Hi everyone,

We heard your feedback, and we're happy to announce that you can now secure your Proton Pass with an extra password in addition to your existing Proton account password.

Thank you to our Visionary members who already had a chance to check out this feature!

All Proton Accounts are already secured with strong, robust encryption, but our optional extra password feature allows you to compartmentalize your Proton Pass account. It lets you create an extra password you must enter before you can access your logins and other sensitive information in Pass.

With the extra password enabled, even if an attacker gets a hold of the password to your Proton Account, they cannot access your Pass account unless they also know your extra password. Be sure to store your extra password securely!

This feature is rolling out today for all Lifetime plans, followed by a staged release for Unlimited plans, and available to everyone else over the coming days: https://proton.me/support/pass-extra-password

Proton Pass now allows you to securely and easily share expiring links to your credit cards, logins, and notes.

from the team:

-------

Hi everyone,

Thanks to your ongoing feedback, we’re pleased to introduce Secure Link Sharing in Proton Pass for all Proton Pass paid plans.

You asked for a simpler way to share a single item, like streaming passwords, family notes, and credit cards, and now you can! Complete with a configurable expiry.

With Secure Link Sharing, you can share with anyone, even if the recipient doesn’t have a Proton account, http://proton.me/blog/pass-secure-link-sharing

Here’s how it works:

  • Easy as copy and paste: Easily generate, update, or delete secure links with just a few clicks in any app.
  • You’re in control: Set an expiration date for the link (from one hour to 30 days) or limit the number of accesses.
  • Encrypted at all times: Secure links are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring only you and the people you share with can access your data.

This feature is rolling out progressively to all users on paid plans, starting first with Lifetime, Visionary, and Unlimited users. It will be available to everyone in the coming days.

Haven’t signed up yet? Upgrade now and get your first year for $1/month (limited-time offer eligible for new users only).

Introducing Docs in Proton Drive: end-to-end encrypted collaborative document editing, that puts your privacy first

Hey everyone, from the team:

-----

Hello everyone,

We're happy to announce the release of Docs in Proton Drive starting today - an end-to-end encrypted collaborative document editor and one of the most requested functionalities from the Proton community.

Docs in Proton Drive starts rolling out today and will be available to everyone over the next few days. Make sure you’re running the latest versions of the Drive desktop and mobile apps.

We built docs in Proton Drive as a joint project with the team from Standard Notes, who shares our core values around privacy and security.

Like all other Proton services, Docs puts you in control of your data. Your documents are only accessible to you and those you share them with, and even your keystrokes and cursor movements are encrypted.

Now, you can create, edit, and collaborate on documents with your family, friends, or colleagues!

With Docs in Proton Drive, you can:

✍️ create new documents and edit them in the Drive web app

🤝 collaborate on documents asynchronously & in real-time

🙋‍♀️ see who else is viewing or editing your documents with live cursors and presence indicators

💬 share feedback using comments and replies

↕️ import and edit .txt / .docx and export in other formats like .pdf, .txt, .md, and .html

💻 access your documents securely from anywhere

All documents created with Docs have a maximum size of 50MB and are automatically saved in your current folder on Proton Drive.

A privacy-respecting alternative to Big Tech

Far too often, online productivity suites require you to accept surveillance as a condition of use. Docs is a milestone in our journey to building a better internet where privacy is the default and another important step towards advancing the mission of the non-profit Proton Foundation.

We're eager to know what you think! Thank you for your continuous support,

How can Proton monitor the dark web for my SSN if ive never given it to them?

I'm on proton unlimited and I turned on Dark Web Monitoring. I figure since i use bitwarden for my password manager, i need to manually sync my passwords so proton can monitor for them. what about more important stuff like adresses, DOB, SSN, etc? proton says here that they can monitor for all that stuff, but how, if they dont have it?

Proton Drive warning: don't reinstall
  • @Dark_Arc @bl4kers

I can understand the confusion. But it kinda makes sense.... if my hypothesis is correct.

Proton Drive has the concepts of "My Files" and "Computers". Files stored under "Computer" (where you can have synced files for up to 10 computers, according to docs) tracks the files for each computer individually.

So when you uninstall Drive and delete the files, they are only stored in the cloud. But after reinstalling it again, it sees the files locally for that computer is gone ... so it gets removed in the cloud.

Had these files been moved to "My Files" in before the reinstall, this should not have happened.

    At least, that's my theory.

  • Introducing Proton Duo: Unlimited privacy for two
  • @PassingThrough @proton_lynx Unfortunately the current implementation does not support photo syncing

  • Introducing Proton Duo: Unlimited privacy for two
  • @proton_lynx 2/2 At this point I'm far more interested in why a Proton Drive Linux client is not available than I am when it will be available.

  • Introducing Proton Duo: Unlimited privacy for two
  • @proton_lynx Proton hasn't said when (if) a Proton Drive Linux client would be made available or what the delay is. They will add you to the long list of user's requesting a Proton Drive Linux client.

When they added me to the list a very warm and comforting feeling came over me. I thought, "They heard me and a Proton Drive Linux client will be available at some point." That was a year or more ago. I'm still comforted by that warm and fuzzy.

  • Introducing Proton Duo: Unlimited privacy for two
  • @proton_lynx @asdfasdfasdf I don't think a Linux client for Proton Drive is at the top of the priority list. It would be a good business practice by Proton to tell us why that is, if indeed it is the case.

  • Heads Up: Kill Switch Disables LAN Access
  • honestly, i expect this behavior with a kill switch.

but i switched to an easier to manage prevention mechanism; you run your vpn connection in its own container using gluetun, and then run your torrent client (or whatever app youre locking down) in a container with its network defined as the vpn container. your lan access the downloads via the docker host.

  • They said in the Reddit post that further down the road they want to implement something like Google wallet or apple pay, that would allow for credit card aliases. I think the Bitcoin solution is the one they chose to build a new platform/foundation but without all the regulation and partnerships hassle of making it for traditional payment systems.

  • Introducing Proton Wallet – a safer way to hold Bitcoin
  • Imo after reading it, it doesn't seem that crazy or off-brand anymore (so long as it gets fleshed out to use something not as transactionally-inefficient as bitcoin).

Edit: their related bitcoin guide has made me change my mind somewhat and think it's a little crazy. I was viewing this as a stepping stone (almost a functional tech demo) towards something more reasonable, but now it doesn't look like that's necessarily what they had in mind @_@

  • Introducing Proton Scribe: a privacy-first writing assistant
