Faded colors when HDR is on in SOTR (Proton Experimental)

Hi, recently I bought HDR monitor I wanted to try out gaming in HDR so I downloaded Shadow of the Tomb Raider I got year or two years ago for free on Epic, turned on HDR in settings and well... It looks worse than SDR. Colors are way less saturated, everything is really faded.

I thought that maybe that's the fault of monitor or something but knowing HDR is kinda new in Linux I decided to spin up old windows partition to see if it looks any better. And to my surprise it looked great!

Is there a way to fix those faded colors?

I'm running Kernel 6.6, Plasma 6 (Wayland), Heroic Launcher, Proton Experimental with launch options: DXVK_HDR=1. GPU is RX 6700 XT and monitor is Gigabyte M27Q.

I tried running it also with gamescope but effect was the same.

GoG Games not working with Heroic Launcher on POP_OS

[Switched to Proton Experimental and everything is working flawlessly.]

Hello!

I have Baldurs Gate 3 and Cyberpunk on GoG - I just tried to install them using Heroic Launcher.

Cyberpunk will open the CDProjekt launcher, but then the game wont start. Baldur will say running - but its not running at all.

I've seen other people saying these games just pretty much work straight up when using Heroic and Im not quite sure what to troubleshoot here as I've not use heroic before (regardless, I got further with Heroic than i did with Lutris for GoG)

Any one else hit these snags? Let me know what information you need from me and i will gladly provide it, im still a linux noob, but can find what ya need if you can tell me what I need to provide to help trouble shoot.

Im using Pop_os.

Thank you in advance!

Tumbleweed update killed my gaming

Has anyone else had this problem? I updated my openSuse Tumbleweed today (restart required), and now none of my games work. Most are through Steam, so at first I thought it was that. But I have Cyberpunk through GOG launched with Heroic. And even more, Alien Arena has the same problem, so it's not even a proton issue (I did try changing proton versions before the other games too).

What happens is that either they freeze entirely, crash to desktop (after a short time), or freeze then crash. It seems like the bigger the game, the more quickly it crashes, which makes me think memory issue. This seemed moreso since ARK didn't even get to the launch menu screen, just played some music while my desktop froze, and I could see my memory widget maxed out. Then the music fizzled and then CTD.

I've never run into a problem like this and have no idea where even to look.

Edit: Another update today and now half of my games work. Even weirder.

Edit: Solved: Was a bug in kernel 6.8.9. Rebooted into 6.8.8 and all is well. Guess We'll see how the next one goes.

Trouble running Baldur's gate 3 on Arch.

The game starts but I have extreme performance issues. I'm not talking about low fps or input delay, I have a decent gaming pc, and it's relatively new. I'm talking about stutters, heavy ones. I manged to snap two screenshots of this happening on 60fps cap and uncapped:

! !

Almost all video settings are unrelated. If I lower them the freezes also lower in number, but I don't think it's a hardware limit.. if this can't run it on high-med (as I had it) nothing can. I ran some benchmarks and stress test, both on Windows and Linux, both Vulkan and Dx11, It didn't stutter.

Some other things to mention is how I run it. From Steam, normally. I have no forced proton selected, I did no other configs. However I might have something fucked as:

!I can run this .exe natively. I'm sure I can't so what's going on?

Anyways, thankfully mangohud got me and tells me that I'm using proton-experimental 9.0. (on the prev. screenshots, I had forced proton enabled, stutters the same)

I tried using steam tinker, and it says: "using proton-unknown-958".

I have no idea what information more to give, I just typed out things that might be related to the issue. If something's unclear or if I should supply more information, just tell me. Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

SOLVED

thanks for the tips, this one was solved by u/Leopard1907 over on Reddit.

it was my driver, and these two commands:

  • sudo pacman -S --needed lib32-mesa vulkan-radeon lib32-vulkan-radeon vulkan-icd-loader lib32-vulkan-icd-loader
  • sudo pacman -R amdvlk lib32-amdvlk

Steam on hyprland is not launching most of my games

I'm using CachyOS (arch based), the steam package being used is from CachyOS's repositories. I'm using an AMD RX6600. Monitor is using 144hz refresh rate (set using hyprland config file)

All my Games are in an NTFS partition.

So far CS2 is the only game that opens up when I click on 'Play' and it is playable with some occasional frame drops.

I had the same issue with flatpak steam when I tried earlier.

I have tried setting the my monitor as primary by using xrandr but that didn't help at all.

Has this happened to anyone ? What can I do to fix this ? I can attach any logs if required.

Edit: thanks to @[email protected] my issue has been solved.

(Mentioning the solution here in case the reddit post gets deleted)

  • Look for a directory called "compatdata" under ~/.steam.
  • It'll probably take some digging, as it's often buried in something like ~/.steam/steam/steamapps . . .
  • The "find" command would be useful in this situation!
  • Make a symbolic link from that folder to the identical location on the NTFS Steam Library.
  • ln -s ~/.steam/foo/bar/compatdata /path/to/ntfs/SteamLibrary/compatdata
  • That's it.

Steam cloud stuck at checking \ out of sync

Not sure if this will help anyone else, but I couldn't find anything online about this and thought I'd share this with online just in case!

I just started playing Outer Wilds on the steam deck for a week or so, and was immediately in love with it. I decided to install it on my PC (popOS) to see how it looks with cranked graphics, and I could not for the life of me figure out how to sync my cloud saves! For some reason the deck kept saying the saves were syncing fine up to the cloud, but my pc kept sticking at 'checking....' when I asked it to sync...

In the end, I ended up finding a setting in the steam client that enables compatibility for every title in steam that isn't Linux native... when I flipped it on, Outer Wilds (along with like 4 other games in my library) all immediately resolved their bugged cloud sync!

So, I guess, steam will complain that it can't get your cloud saves to download, when really it doesn't have a compatdata folder for the saves to download to. Kinda jank!

SIFU (and other games) runs awfully slowly on Wine

Several games don't run (itch.io games) or run unbearably slowly (SIFU, HighFleet, Teardown) on Wine with my new PC (7600X + 6700XT), even though for example Highfleet worked flawlessly on my laptop. (4800H + 1650ti)

For SIFU I have tried 8.11, ProtonGE 8.8, Lutris 7.2.2 with the same results. (Picture is from ProtonGE 8.8).

I wasn't able to try Proton Experimental since this is a pirated version. (Sorry I fully know that pirating indie games isn't ethical, I have my reasons)

EDIT: Previously I have tried switching back to X11 but didn't solve the issue in Highfleet's case.

I'm using EndevaourOS with 6.3.9-arch1-1 kernel version with Vulkan running (tested with vkcube).

SOLUTION: It seems DXVK wasn't installed, so by following this guide (How to Use) https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk fixed Dave the Diver and SIFU for me, but Teardown and Highfleet is still problematic. It's interesting since DXVK is enabled for all of the 4 games in Lutris.

  • 1: Download the newest DXVK release tar.gz (https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases)
  • 2: Copy the dlls over to your wineprefix (wineprefix is probably located in $HOME/.wine)

export WINEPREFIX=/path/to/wineprefix cp x64/*.dll $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/system32' cp x32/*.dll $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/syswow64' winecfg

  • 3: In the winecfg (the opened app) go to Libraries and in the "new override..." listbox, add those dlls which you copied over. Add those dlls which are present in dxvk-<version-number>/x64 if you ls them.

Team Fortress 2 won't start

I am on Fedora Workstation 38 on GNOME Wayland, using a cyberpower pc with an AMD graphics card & cpu. Whenever I try to launch Team Fortress 2, it crashes the moment the actual game's executable is loaded (hl2_linux). The problem doesn't seem to be related to graphics (I already used the -soft, -safe, -sw, -dx11, and -dx12 options, still didn't work), especially since the game's window doesn't show up. I also tried rebooting multiple times, didn't work, same with directly launching the game. Proton isn't an option, because A: On my machine, it runs at half speed for some reason, and B: Even then, TF2 doesn't want you to use Proton, it wants you to use the native linux version. (It doesn't let you join online games if you're using proton)

Also, no saying "change hardware/distro" as the solution, please.

The problem: Fedora went really quickly when rolling out LLVM-related things, and borked a library TF2 uses for memory allocation. The solution: Flatpak Steam fixes that
