How to create your own community on Yiffit.net (even if you're a remote user)!

This post will explain how you can create your own community on Yiffit, regardless of whether you are a local user at this instance or not.

Background: We have restricted the unsupervised creation of communities since that could potentially lead to abuse due to the limited moderating tools that lemmy currently has.

Via request, we will still allow you to create as many communities as you want and to manage them as you see fit. We just want to avoid malicious actors.

The silver lining is that this will also allow us to create communities for remote users!

How to request your own community

The process is very simple:

  1. Make sure you have created an introductory post about yourself at [email protected]. This is the only condition.
  2. Send a private message to @[email protected] with the text "COMMUNITY REQUEST" in all caps and then the following fields:
  • Handle (all lowercase, no spaces, underscore allowed)
  • Display name
  • If it's a NSFW, SFW or Mixed community
  • Whether everyone or only moderators can make posts

Note: you can create communities about nearly any topic. Non-furry and personal communities are more than welcome.

3a. If you're a local user, the community will be created for you, you'll be appointed as mod and then ownership will be transferred to you.

3b. If you're a remote user, the community will be created for you and you'll be appointed as mod. @[email protected] will have to stay as owner since we can't transfer it to you, but we will not interfere with your vision or project for the community.

Community handles will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Community handles need to be unique, but there's no limit on how many communities about similar topics we create as long as they're not abandoned straight away and at least some effort is put into them to get them started. Thus, for example, if 10 people want a community about protogens but each with their own style of moderation, we'll be happy to accommodate you (although we might have a fuse blow due to toaster overload :P).

Despite the restriction on unsupervised community creation, it is still our intention to allow anyone to create any community they see fit as long as it abides by the instances's overarching rules

Welcome to Yiffit.net! ::: Log In or subscribe in order to be able to see all content and read this post to get started!

Welcome! This pinned post will have everything you need to get started as well as useful information about yiffit.net for fellow instance administrators.

First: please log-in on Yiffit.net or subscribe via a NSFW-enabled instance to be able to see all content. This link will give you information on how to be able to view NSFW posts.

Instance overview

>With reddit banning NSFW subs via their API and possibly altogether, Yiffit aims to be a free and open alternative dedicated to sharing furry artwork, always with attribution. > >Content: SFW & NSFW, leaning towards the latter Federation: Enabled Community creation: Enabled via request. Users can create and moderate their own communities! Registrations: open, with manual approval to prevent abuse Notable rules:

  • No underage characters.
  • All NSFW content must be appropriately flagged.
  • All posts must have attribution and the DNP list must be respected.
  • Sharing content that is behind a pay wall (piracy) is strictly forbidden.
  • Real NSFW photos and videos are only allowed if they are related to the submitter (eg. a selfie). This is to prevent distribution of sensitive photos without permission of the people depicted in them.
  • Posting via bots is allowed as long as long as it's within the established frequency limits. > >While unusual if you're not familiar with furry nsfw artwork, this instance's content is safe and legal to federate with. > >DNP, Takedown requests or inquiries can be sent to @[email protected] (Fediverse) or wanderpackmatesorg (email). > >If you're a moderator of a furry or yiff subreddit and would like to jump on board of the moderation team at Yiffit, please let us know!

Notable communities

Please note that you'll need to be logged in to this instance or any other federated instance which allows NSFW in order to view most of these communities. Lemmy.ml does currently NOT allow you to access adult content from their instance.

Instance rules

  1. You need to be +18 years old to sign up, view content from or send messages to this instance.
  2. All submissions that are not original content must include attribution in the title.
  3. All submissions that are not original content should include a link to the artist's gallery or profile. Please note that this should be a page managed by the artist, not a link to e621. Fortunately you'll find link to valid sources on e621 itself.
  4. Links to the artist's gallery or profile should not link to pages that are known to be problematic or be dedicated to hosting content featuring underage characters in a NSFW situation.
  5. Submissions from artists in the DNP list are not allowed (see list below).
  6. NSFW artwork featuring underage characters is not allowed.
  7. AI created images are currently not allowed. Once the instance grows large enough we'll ask for user feedback on how to approach this matter and hear out our user's opinions.
  8. IRL NSFW content is allowed only if:
  • It is related to you in some way (a photo of yourself, a photo you took, etc...)
  • You have permission to share the photo
  • Every third party in the photo is either blurred out, non-identifiable or you have their permission to publicly share the photo with their faces visible.
  1. Do not post anything that was published behind a paywall and which was not publicly shared by the artist.
  2. If you are an artist, you can advertise yourself in the [email protected] community. There you are free to post links to your Patreon or similar and share links to e-commerce platforms or pricing pages.
  3. More extreme content should be posted under its own community instead of using the general communities.
  4. Aside from underage characters, there is a ban on extreme gore, snuff and similarly sadistic depictions that include some for of mutilation, non-trivial amounts of blood and death. This ban is currently indefinite but will be removed once lemmy has better moderation tools and we have a way to ensure that our site is not used to glorify problematic behavior. The ban on underage characters and characters that can evidently be mistaken of being underage is permanent.
  5. No discussion of anything potentially illegal or which could get the instance in trouble. If in doubt message @[email protected].
  6. No soliciting, advertising or dog-whistling regarding prohibited or illegal content.
  7. No toxicity, no hate speech, no harassment, no brigading, no kinkshaming, no bigotry, etc...
  8. No discussion of politics in local-instance posts and comments. There's other instances better suited for that. Feel free to use this instance's account to engage in remote content involving politics as long as it doesn't fall into the restrictions of rule #15.
  9. If you believe that any content violates the rules, please file a report.
  10. Use the [email protected] to discuss ideas and improvement suggestions.

DNP List

The following artists have expressed their desire to not have their artwork shared even with attribution. Please respect their wishes:

  1. It is a safe assumption that anyone not wanting their artwork shared on e621 wouldn't want to have it shared on here. Please follow e621's DNP list as a baseline
  2. Please also make sure you check e621's conditional DNP list.
  3. (There are no more entries due to Yiffit.net being very new)

FAQ

Q: Where does the name "Yiffit" come from? A: It's a wordplay on a) reddit, which will ban access to NSFW subs via third party apps soon, as well as b) "Yiff it (fuck it), we'll run our own community with trading card games and femboy foxes"

Q: Who or what is the mascot? A: It's a Hyena, due to "Yeen" and "Yiffit" starting with the same language. They have no name yet! Suggestions are more than welcome!

Q: Can I create a community for a specific type of content? A: Yes, and you'll be able to moderate it according to your rules as long as it doesn't violate the overarching instance-wide rules. Also, you will need an account on Yiffit.net to be able to create a new community.

Q: Can I create SFW communities as well? A: Yes, your success my vary since we're not a generalist furry instance but you are free to create SFW communities about any topic as long as it follows the overarching instance-wide rules.

Q: I don't have an account on Yiffit and I'm not fit for moderating a community, but can I still suggest a community so that you can create it? A: Yes, if you create a post at [email protected], you can request to the staff the creation for a new community you'd like to see.

Q: I'm an artist, can I advertise my commissions on here? A: Yes! Please send me a message at @[email protected] and I'll create a community for commission adverts!

Q: Can I create a bot that posts automatically? A: Yes, but it should be limited to one submission every two hours per community and it needs to include attribution at least in the title. We might increase or decrease the bot posting frequency depending on how it goes.

Weird behavior with youtube links

Has anybody noticed weird behavior with links to youtube? Specifically, instead of the video description, I just see some German text, which translation says is a boilerplate of what youtube is. From yiffit, no image and german text, from pawb, image and accurate description. . This looks like a recent change, everything older than about 2 days ago looks fine.

This is observed from the default desktop website.

Edit: Based on the comment from @[email protected] I would guess youtube made a recent change and the language is generated based on where the lemmy instance is hosted.

Next day edit (July 21): Whatever was causing has reverted. Videos posted the affected days are still messed up, but new posts look like they're working like they used to.

Edit: later in the day. Whatever it is is back.

General inbound federation question

@[email protected] is everything working as expected for inbound federation? casual conversations moved from lemmy.world to lemm.ee I don't see any comments or votes in the lemm.ee community from before yiffit was aware of its existence. I think I've seen this other places too, so I don't know if this is how its supposed to work, or its just a quark of the current code. In general federation to lemmynsfw is just broken here.

1

Are there federation problems with Hexbear or did they stop moderating with Yiffit?

I really only follow one Hexbear community here in Yiffit which is [email protected], but I just noticed that since 4 months ago there are no updates in c/libre here in Yiffit, although if you go to the community directly from Hexbear there are new recent posts, and a lot of them.

I already checked the instances blocked by Hexbear and Yiffit doesn't seem to be among them, but neither in "allowed" or "linked" instances, although I have no idea what it's the difference between these.

Any idea why this could be?

Federation issues with lemmy.ml

I'm not sure if this is a problem specifically with [email protected] because I don't follow any other lemmy.ml communities, but it's been a month since the last post in there according to the Yiffit version of the community and yes, I'm filtering by new and if you go directly to the community in its instance there are a lot of new posts that never reach Yiffit.

I have another account in Dbzer0 and there are no federation issues with Lemmy.ml or at least with [email protected].

Thoughts on having a comment on every post that links to a list of local communities?

One of the harder aspects of navigation in lemmy is seeing interesting new communities on remote instances. What if there was a post here (meta) or chat that had links to all the local communities and when a new post is made to yiffit, a comment is added that links to the chat/meta post. That way if someone stumbles on something here they like, they don’t have to use some work around to see what else is here. I don’t know much about the lemmy API, but the list could simply check once a day?/week?/month? and update the post if anything changed.

Yes, I am aware [email protected] exists, but remote users probably aren't. I am also aware of the link in the sidebar (when present), but that is outdated and you only see it if you know its there.

Announcing status.packmates.org and status.yiffit.net

Announcing status.packmates.org and status.yiffit.net

Heya everyone! I've been mostly silent for some time, but it's all with good reason (I promise!)

Over the last few days I've spent a lot of time on server maintenance. Many of these changes will be invisible to you as users (such as getting a /48 ipv6 range, setting up SLAAC/DHCPv6, reviewing security and firewall rules, etc...)

But today I set up something that I can share: status pages!

Head over to: \- https://status.packmates.org \- https://status.yiffit.net

(they're the same page actually, but the different domain is to make it easier to remember if you're a user of one site and not the other).

There's a slight caveat in that the status page is hosted on the hypervisor itself, so if that goes down, everything goes down but you'll at least know by not being able to load the status page itself!

Ideally I would host this somewhere external but we're not there yet. One day I hope to even have a server cluster for redundancy, but we'd have to host many more services to be able to justify this.

FeralBot Schedule Change

FeralBot Schedule Change

Effective immediately, FeralBot will only post twice a day, every 12 hours, at 8AM and 8PM PDT. This is to reduce what I feel is an overabundance of bot posting on the /c/feralyiff community.

Tagging rules for intersex and ambiguous characters

Just to be clear, I don't want us to be super picky about tags - IMO as long as it's understandable, anything is okay. However, Pokémon yiff has a pinned thread talking about this, and I've been PMed asking how to tag something. Basically, even if we don't want to enforce it, it might be useful to have some standard as a guideline.

Many communities reference the tagging rules of the main !yiff community, which includes tags for male and female. However, it does not specify rules for characters that fall outside that spectrum, or whose gender is unknown (due to being obscured, for example). This has resulted in tagging being a bit ad-hoc (e.g. [H], [I], [G], for gynomorphs), and might feel a bit exclusionary for a site that claims to be "queer".

Just as something to propose, how about we update the tagging rules to be something like this (to be similar to e621's gender tags):

  • [M] For male characters.
  • [F] For female characters.
  • [G] For gynomorph (feminine character with a dick but no pussy).
  • [A] For andromorph (masculine character with a pussy but no dick).
  • [H] For herm (character with both a pussy and dick).
  • [U] For Unknown/unclear.

This would also mean retiring pairing codes ("G" for "gay", "S" for straight and so on) in favour of "M/M" and "M/F".

We now have hourly snapshots / backups!

We now have hourly snapshots / backups!

I'm happy to inform both packmates.org and yiffit.net users that both sites now benefit from the ZFS filesystem that the new server has been set up with.

I have implemented automated hourly snapshots for 24 hours + daily snapshots for 31 days. In theory they will only grow in size if there's actual changes to the disk of both VMs and I should be able to have enough space.

Furthermore, local snapshots are complemented by the daily offsite backups which allow us to recover even if the full server were to suddenly explode. Full backups are first created on the server itself and then copied offsite so that for a full week we have two independent copies of each day.

Depending on space usage I'll make sure to replicate the offsite repository so that there's two offsite copies for the last 31 days + 7 local copies. That would be 69 individual full backup files + snapshots.

I hope I'll have enough space with deduplication.

Update and statement in regards to our last weekly discussion, including a new rule that bans the discussion of irl bestiality.

If you can, please read this whole post. There is a TLDR at the bottom. Please feel free to share your feedback.

During the last Weekly discussion, the topic of zoophilia and bestiality was brought up. I had to step in and close the thread before things went further out of hand. This post is to address that thread as well as a series of measures and concerns for the future.

I have been thinking a lot on how to write this post since I want to make sure it strikes a balance between the assertiveness that I believe is necessary and the non-judgmental attitude that a kink-positive space like Yiffit should have.

Please rest assured that non of these measures are meant to restrict the enjoyment of fictional content that we share here. They are only meant to ensure that Yiffit as a platform keeps being a place that is safe, harmonious and free of content that could lead to irl harm.

  1. A site-wide ban on the discussion of bestiality As much as an argument could be made that such a discussion would be interesting even if merely from an intellectual point of view, the truth is that we at Yiffit are woefully unprepared for this for several reasons:

A) Immediate harm to users: On Lemmy / the fediverse is notoriously difficult to remove content. What you delete here is very likely still visible on other non-lemmy instances or could have been cached by a malicious instance. EVEN in the exceptional case of a merely intellectual discussion, what users say here even as a theoretical exercise, could be used against them for harassment or even for legal action against them in some countries.

B) Propagation of false information that leads to irl harm: Yiffit must not become a platform to propagate false information that could lead to irl harm. For anyone who has legitimate questions about this subject we encourage you to source your information from sites like Wikipedia instead of internet forums or social media.

For these reasons I believe it is necessary to ban the discussion of irl bestiality as well as any similar topics related to the irl practice of sex with real animals, whether in a hypothetical scenario or not. (Basically don't use a 'hypothetically speaking' phrase to circumvent the rule).

If this topic is brought up I ask you to please NOT reply and report it instead.

  1. A soft-restriction in the participation in weekly discussion threads to external groups with vested interests

I am sure that there was no bad intention and this is merely a side-effect on how federation works, but I have come to believe that there could be a negative impact in the enjoyment of weekly discussions if there is a sudden influx of non-lemmy users who have a certain personal interest in the subject that is being discussed.

I will not restrict weekly discussions to lemmy users only for the time being, but I will try to keep an eye out for situations in which these discussions could be impacted by such an influx of users.

Once again I want to highlight that I believe that none of these users really had bad intentions, but I want you to imagine what would have happened in the recent thread if while discussing the controversial subject of "puriteens" a group of these people who do not normally participate in Yiffit at all, were to jump on that thread and influence the discussion with their numbers. It would take away the enjoyment by users who regularly participate in them. Thus, the same really applies to any other topic.

On a related topic: while troubleshooting outbound federation I removed all blocked instances the other day and still have to re-enable the blocklist. The current criteria for adding an instance to this list is twofold:

  1. There is risk that our instance is used to distribute illegal content. This applies almost exclusively to lemmy instances.

  2. There is risk that users from a remote instance harass or intentionally interfere with our organic activity.

This second point is generally applicable to instances that are very political, but can apply to any other instance whose users participate in our spaces in a manner that leads us to believe they could have ulterior motives.

  1. An attitude of kindness and non-judgement for a person's kinks or sexual fantasies

Having discussed the harsher measures in points 1 and 2, I think it's necessary to reaffirm that I wholeheartedly want Yiffit to be a space that is queer, kink-friendly and open-minded.

If anything became clear from the responses to the last discussion thread is that a person's sexual interests are not an indicator of that person's moral compass and I think it would be wrong to perpetuate false stereotypes.

As such, I think it would be a serious faux pas for me to take any hot-headed action that impacts the content that is shared on Yiffit. On the contrary, I hope that the above measures (1 and 2) serve as a rational way to address the situation that happened the other and calm any concerns while in parallel we might as well double-down on keeping this place as open-minded as possible.

To be more specific, over the last years I have seen a pattern in which a certain situation or drama, caused a site or the site's staff to become exceedingly defensive and feel the need to crack down on anything that could be criticized. Subsequently, I have seen how bad actors such as Kiwifarms or any other malicious interest group have weaponized this outrage to manipulate people either into compliance or into silence.

As someone with a feral fursona, I have been called "zoophile" or "animal abuser" on twitter more times than I can count. During that time I went through different phases but eventually realized that bad actors will, inch by inch, demand more of your reaction / compliance or silence while holding the threat of a call-out, doxx or similar over your head. I feel like I have the obligation to do things differently with Yiffit.

As such, I feel like the best strategy is to take measures that are sensible while also reassure our users that our ethos has not changed. In this regard, I want to highlight two points:

  1. On the Harkness Test: While this test is an interesting thought experiment, it should not be used to censor the fictional content that a person consumes.

People constantly read, watch or listen to fiction productions that feature non-consensual interactions such as battles, fights, uprisings, betrayal, manipulation, etc... It would be ridiculous to criticize one's enjoyment of Game of Thrones only because the interactions between fictional characters aren't always consensual. I don't think that the emotional highs and lows felt during a well-developed drama are that far removed from the emotional highs and lows felt during arousal.

Referring back to the harkness test and the world of fiction in general, it makes little sense that a knight might be allowed to slay a dragon and kill it, but suddenly there's moral outrage if a knight is depicted laying the dragon. Any outrage would seemingly be of moral/religious origin and not really related to the actual well-being of the dragon.

That said, Yiffit as a platform has and will have certain restrictions because some content can be more difficult to moderate and we will also monitor our content and comments to prevent any sort of malicious or harmful networking. But, as a rule of thumb, I and future staff will not judge you as person based on your what turns you on. Specific communities owned by Yiffit users are free to place their own restrictions and it's perfectly fine if someone does want to be more conservative in the type of content they allow. We only ask that any moderation actions they deem necessary, including bans from their community, be communicated in a respectful and non-condescending manner.

  1. On the matter of zoophilia

During the discussion thread several users admitted to experiencing an attraction to animals and explained that this is something they discussed with their therapist.

I want to emphasize that no moderator action was taken or should be taken merely for such a confession and that I do not wish to meddle or interfere in this person's mental health therapy.

Moderation actions will be taken if a person violates the rules, such as the discussion of bestiality in point 1 or we have indications that a user has ulterior motives, such as explained in point 2.

I've tried to educate myself a bit and found this on wikipedia:

> "Stephanie LaFarge, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School, and Director of Counseling at the ASPCA, writes that two groups can be distinguished: bestialists, who rape or abuse animals, and zoophiles, who form an emotional and sexual attachment to animals.[16] Colin J. Williams and Martin Weinberg studied self-defined zoophiles via the internet and reported them as understanding the term zoophilia to involve concern for the animal's welfare, pleasure, and consent, as distinct from the self-labelled zoophiles' concept of "bestialists", whom the zoophiles in their study defined as focused on their own gratification."

When some people in that thread confessed about their attraction and subsequently began exposing their reasons on why they believe that animals can consent to sexual intercourse with humans, I do believe that they did not have bad motives and that their expression of care for animals to the extend of having become vegan is well-intended.

In 2018, a now infamous furry youtuber named Kero was exposed as being involved with people who tied up, raped, mutilated and dismembered animals, including puppies. He was also caught organizing a trip to a cabin where they wanted to rape two german shepherds and he had the odd request to 'not kill them' (which leads me to believe that he knew what his accomplice was usually into).

I hope you understand why I fucking want to believe the excerpt from the Wikipedia and that the people who interacted in our discussion thread the other day were different from Kero and had at least good intention, regardless of the accuracy on their theories of consent. As such I do not wish to interfere in their therapy and will hold no judgment for their involuntary attraction. I will, however, emphasize the two new rules that restrict the discussion or promotion or irl bestiality and also of non-organic interactions with ulterior motives.

What this means in practice is that we caution users to be careful in how they handle such sensitive topics. While it means a lot to me that someone with a complicated personal situation feels comfortable enough on Yiffit to open up and maybe even seek the advice of other members, we will remove content if it's off-topic or brought up in an unnatural manner that makes us feel uneasy about the actual intentions of that person.

Furthermore, please remember that it's nearly impossible to truly delete anything on the fediverse and asses the impact that this could have in your safety and privacy.

This word of caution is of course applicable to any other topic: be careful with your privacy and please do not give us reason to believe that you're trying to use this platform to artificially spread an idea that's not related to to furry / yiff itself, whether political, personal, financial (adverts), etc...

Wrapping up. TLDR: In summary there are two new rules:

  1. Do not discuss irl bestiality.
  2. Do not use Yiffit with ulterior motives that are not related to the furry fandom or yiff (for example it's okay to post your favorite kind of yiff because you want others to know about it). 2.a. As part of the rules above, we will monitor discussion threads to avoid the sudden influence of an external group with a vested interest in one of the topics of the discussion.

At the same time we keep our commitment of being kink-positive and being non-judgemental about your sexual fantasies as long as content and interactions shared are not illegal or harmful. In the case of a sensitive personal circumstance being brought up, we will handle it with respect as long as it's done so in a natural, organic and safe manner. If we feel the user is being reckless with their own privacy or is trying to proselytize a certain idea, we will remove the content. Persistence in the matter could lead to a suspension or defederation.

I truly hope you find this way of handling things to be level-headed and measured in order to handle a complex subject in a manner that asserts our commitment to safety and human/animal well-being without losing our ethos of openness, kink-positivity and healthy sexual expression.

The comment box of that thread in particular doesn't appear to work. Details in post body

My account is on pawb.social and i'm trying to comment on the latest discussion thread on yiffit.net, but as the gif shows, the comment box doesn't react to clicks. Other things seem to work fine.

Perplexingly, every other thread that i can find on yiffit.net lets me comment normally, it's just this one thread where the box doesn't react. That would imply that this thread in particular has a comments limit, but i can't see any indication of that.

Apologies if i'm being the big dumb, it's true that most computer issues are between the keyboard and the chair

I will log off for today and try again tomorrow, i have a whole rant ready in my mind god dammit

If you're a user at Packmates or Yiffit, you should know that my current stance regarding (https://packmates.org/tags/threads) is a precautionary defederation.

If you're a user at Packmates or Yiffit, you should know that my current stance regarding #threads is a precautionary defederation.

They'll probably launch with federation whitelist and I doubt they wouldn't defederate from us, but there's too many risks and unknowns right now.

I don't think as an admin I should limit everyone's ability to interact with threads just because they're a for-profit company, but there's some huge red flags in regards to data management and potential spam.

So, if anyone was wondering my stance, I'll place a precautionary domain block for now.

Once we have more info and/or they have started federating, I will start thinking about objective conditions that need to be fulfilled to remove the block. It won't be based on my hatred of corporations but actual criteria in regards to guaranteeing user security and health of the fediverse.

Detecting vote manipulation or brigading (example)

After reading this post here I took a deep dive into the database and ran a few queries to see if I could use it to detect some basic manipulation such as brigading or other types of persistent hostile behavior.

I'd describe this as people who could have blocked a certain community but instead seemingly dedicate themselves to continuously downvote posts, maybe because they don't like furry stuff in general.

Each line in the image corresponds to one person and how many times they have downvoted posts in a given community.

I won't take any actions right now, this is all very experimental. I just wanted to share this with y'all to let you know that we admins have tools to give us clues about whether some sort of brigading is going on.

Interesting stuff. Personally, I'd urge people who don't like furry stuff to just block a community and carry on. There's nothing to be gained by obsessing yourself with stuff you don't like.

Update: () New maintenance for production instance will happen tomorrow 2023-07-01

Latest update: Yay, it works on the test instance. I created a test instance in order to not impact production and be able to test out correct settings. I'll be applying these proven settings to production tomorrow.

Update: had to rollback due to problems in the migration to object storage`. This concludes the maintenance while I investigate what could be causing this.

files migrate correctly over to object storage but when trying to run lemmy from there, it starts breaking down and even the internal components like the UI report unsupported files. I had to restart because lemmy-ui wouldn't even start back up due to image format / problems reading images, which is weird.

Previous: Ongoing Maintenance right now: images are temporarily disabled as we upload them to object storage

Apologies for any inconvenience.

New furry communities on Yiffit.net (2023-06-21)

This post is to inform our remote users about new communities that have been created over the last few days and to which they can subscribe.

If you're on lemmy, you can click on the [S] link to directly search for this community in your instance without having to copy/paste.

[email protected] [S] NSFW - Gynomorph, female characters with male genitalia [email protected] [S] - Malek Art, personal community for uploads by the artist @[email protected] [email protected] [S] - Furry videos: everything from music videos and animation to fursuit parades. [email protected] [S] NSFW - Impregnation Yiff [email protected] [S] - OC character sharing and appreciation

If you're a fellow instance admin you should know about our instance:

  • We do not allow and strictly enforce a ban of NSFW content involving underage characters
  • We do not allow real NSFW photos or videos that are not related to the submitter. A nude selfie is OK, while NSFW content of a celebrity is not. We do not tolerate sharing or sending sensitive images without permission.
  • We do not allow sharing content that is behind a paywall or where the artist has expressed their desire not to have their content shared.
  • This instance aims to be safe and legal to federate with.

You can contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you <3

2023-06-17 Maintenance update complete.

Scroll down to see the original post Alright, I'll consider the maintenance complete. Here are the updates:

  1. Lemmy backend has been upgraded to version 0.17.4 which is the latest available. This added some database optimizations, applied some security patches and potentially fixed some bugs although the lemmy devs have very vague release notes for this version and mention that more information will be given in the next version.

  2. I have also hooked up the server's backups to cloud storage. This should have no visible impact but it gives us an extra redundancy layer in case a backup needs to be used. Now that the instance is growing this is a must.

  3. Finally there's one issue which I wanted to do today but had to postpone: media storage.

Yesterday the instance crashed because we filled up the virtual machine's hard drive completely. This should not have happened so early. For some reason we've been caching a lot of media of external instances. This could be a bug in the way lemmy handles media. Unfortunately this is pretty much "beta software" and we have to roll with the punches.

My intention was to hook up the server to object storage for media files where we'd have plenty of space, but there's currently two ways of doing it: a good way and and a proper way. The proper way requires upgrading the pict-rs component of lemmy to the latest version... but a) it's not a final version, but a release candidate. b) I have doubts on how this will impact the lemmy upgrade process since it is pretty much automated and I'm worried there might be some sort of conflict or issue for manually upgrading one of the components.

For now it might be best to wait a little bit more until I have more information. I doubled the hard drive and it should last us for some time. Rest assured that this has nothing to do with the images that we upload in our communities, but with caching remote media which should not be cached.

Anyways, this concludes today's maintenance. I do have some pending updates about moderation, personal communities, and plans for the future, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow. I will give you a quick heads up in bullet point format:

  1. I'm at the point where I'll open up applications for moderators. Stay tuned.
  2. Please don't use NSFW content for community icons or banners. No one has done so, but I remembered that I need to put this in the rules. This is because they appear as profile icons and profile banner on other clients such as Mastodon and are visible to everyone.
  3. When I said that I want Yiffit to become a community space, I meant it. [email protected] is the first "personal community" and this is perfectly fine. I'll soon give more details about how this fits into the larger vision as well as the challenges this presents. I want to give you, the users, the tools to carve out your own space.
  4. Most importantly, please tag NSFW very liberally. We do this as a courtesy to remote users from different parts of the world and cultures. Since everyone on yiffit has access to this content and is over 18, it's not meant to be a filter to keep minors away from sensitive images, but more as a respectful gesture for other users who may not share our values. I'll share more info about it tomorrow. If you have any concerns, please send me a DM.

Please note this is not a restriction since every yiffit user or remote user interested in yiffit should already have an account capable of viewing NSFW tagged content. This is just a measure to get highly sensitive remote users off our backs :P.

There's a point to be made about us having the moral high ground, but if you'll post some sort of cropped yiff, pin-up, sensual, etc... image, even if it should be safe, it's probably best to tag it as NSFW. And don't worry too much if you forget.

Example:

spoiler: potentially nsfw. These are tagged "safe" on e6 but it'd be best if we tag them as nsfw

___ ! !

!

!

But as I said, more info about all this tomorrow!

PS: I have been reading all your comments and I am humbled by the amount of support I've been receiving. Actually they were popping up on screen as notifications while doing maintenance work. It felt like one of those anime scenes where you've got friends and family shouting messages of hope and determination ///. Thank you everyone!

Original post First of all we'll be upgrading to the new version of lemmy (v.17.4) which does not have major changes but some database optimizations and might change some bugs.

As far as I know its the next one which will have much expected bug fixes, but we might be surprised with some improvements in this one as well. In any case this update needs to be done to prepare for the next.

Furthermore I will also do some server maintenance in ensuring that the instance is more robust and capable of handling our growth. I'll be able to give more details about our current setup and technical details once the upgrade concluded.

I hope to keep the downtime to a minimum. It could be less than 5 minutes for each, but could also be around 30min in a bad-case scenario. (Worst case if is something goes wrong and I need to restore a backup, but that is unlikely to happen).

Weird behavior with youtube links
  • The plot thickens, I see the same thing (Cyrillic) from world when using desktop

  • Closing Registrations. Reflecting on viability of continuation of Yiffit
  • so happy to see the instance back online. i've missed it. completely understandable that you're not able to expend the time to maintain it. it's a lot of work and effort and money D: thank you for all you do, @[email protected]

  • General inbound federation question
  • So I would expect this is related to the inbound queuing discussed on casual conversation, blahaj, and reddthat. Not much is written about the initial sync, but I would think it is a related problem.
My personal tl:dr, because I didn't read it all or dive into the technical details:
There is only one inbound queue per remote instance, the bigger instances fill the queue up leading to sync problems. This gets worse over large distances (I didn't really read into why). I guess there was an assumption of more smaller distributed instances than some of the larger ones that popped up. It sounds like a code scaling problem.

  • Closing Registrations. Reflecting on viability of continuation of Yiffit
  • @Wander aww man, and I was looking forward to explore this as my entrance to the lemmyverse, some day, in my own pace. Your reasons are fully understandable though, fediblocks were a terrible design decision to begin with, way to ruin the fedi user experience.

  • What should the yiffit mascot be named? - StrawPoll
  • ultimately I think the final decision is up to @[email protected], I just put the poll together with all the suggested names. giffit is at least a cleaver use of a meme, and not a complete shitpost.

  • Federation issues with lemmy.ml
  • I swear I read a month, but it seems that the last activity was two months ago, although it is recent since the defederation was almost 8 months ago.

  • Thoughts on having a comment on every post that links to a list of local communities?
  • Cool, I'm already working on something. Used @[email protected]'s pythorhead library to keep it populated.

  • Thoughts on having a comment on every post that links to a list of local communities?
  • That's not a bad idea, but maybe we could have a link to [email protected] instead? Or it could be a link to a static page with a list of all communities. I think that's more feasible since it wouldn't clutter the comment section with a very long post.

  • Announcing status.packmates.org and status.yiffit.net
  • @LittleFox I am officially your fan now, then. Because I would like to do overkill stuff as a hobby as well.

  • Tagging rules for intersex and ambiguous characters
  • I been going through with all of these. Except Hermaphrodite. Since we have a gynomorph community and it puts hermaphrodites under it's label, I simply use gynomorph for both gyno and herms for anything containing either that I post in c/femyiff.

Never used S/G/L/B/T/I/Inc(inclusive has everyone in it). Even though those might be sorta fine to use in cases like an image with 4 or more people in a orgy or a gangbang. So we're not doing what I have been doing where I put M/M/M/M/F/G/M/M/M/A/U to represent everyone in the image. That way it could be labeled as [G Threesome],[T Threesome], [B Orgy], [Inc Orgy], [S Gangbang], [I Gangbang]

  • The comment box of that thread in particular doesn't appear to work. Details in post body
  • Also while we're here i'm noticing this, the & got lost somewhere on the way

Is there a bug report channel?

  • Should I disable downvotes?
  • I think I've seen what you've been talking about (not because I'm obsessed with calculating how much imaginary karma I have, sush). What seems to happen is a post gets posted, it gets one or two downvotes probably because it's yeeted into everyone's "all" stream, and then it slowly ticks upvotes as the "regulars" see it.

However, I've also started paying attention and noticing it on other (non-controversial) communities as well. Random posts that have downvotes for (as I see it) no real reason (although I did notice that someone has apparently made it their personal mission to downvote every meme on [email protected] ) . I guess it's just "background radiation" of a reddit-like platform. I'm honestly surprised it's not worse, considering that furry is an, uh, acquired taste.

It'd be nice if Lemmy did it so that people on no-downvote instances could go and downvote on other instances. Or even do it at a community level (so some communities could be no-downvote, even on the same instance), but I think they have a lot on their plate already. I'm not sure where I stand on them being enabled here, although if I could toggle it for my communities I'd probably leave them enabled, mostly because of a lack of compelling reason to do otherwise.
