Make blocked users not show up in inbox and profile views

Blocking a user hides their content in comments, but it still shows up in inbox when viewing all as well as in comment chains in the profile view. It would be great if blocked users didn't show up in these places.

Let me know if there's more info needed.

Fork an open source version of Connect (suggestions and discussion welcomed)

Before I get into my comments, I just want to ask that if you haven't bought the dev a coffee, please buy him a coffee. Personally, I have bought several with the intent of covering for those who cannot. Our dev has earned it.

I am just going to say that Connect is awesome. Even through early development, when there were huge issues, it progressed at a good pace. And yeah, it has gotten super stable and functions great as a simple and easy to use Lemmy client.

I would also like to make clear that I respect this app as the sole devs creation. He/She is 100% able to direct this project as they see fit. Period.

However. One person development teams can be a serious risk to the longevity and stability of an app. People get tired and burned out. People have actual lives outside of working on a single app. People can just vanish from dev work. That is all normal.

With the recent Lemmy instance updates and some subtle bugs that are showing, my concern is that it may become a much larger challenge to keep this app up to date. In my limited dev experience, core API changes (or API bugs) are a royal pain in the ass to deal with. A person could spend more time just keeping their app functional instead of developing new features or working on minor bugs.

I was hoping that people in this community that have experience with the development of large open source projects, can contribute ideas for our dev that may make it palatable to open this project up to additional contributors.

I think the biggest things I would like to call out is that if this project is opened, it may damage any revenue that is being generated by this app for the dev and I don't want to see that happen. (People gotta work and people gotta eat. )

What open source licenses are available that would keep full control of this app in the hands of the original dev? (Is that even a viable option?)

Quite simply, other than opening this app up fully, I don't quite know exactly what I am asking for. It would be nice to keep full control of this app in the hands of the dev, while also allowing community development.

Just to reiterate, this post is not meant to be rude or pushy. If anything I said came off that way, it was absolutely not the intent and offer a humble apology if it did.

Source instance shown at top of post.

When browsing on lemmy.ca/c/all and I click through to a post, the local source instance and community for a post is shown as lemmy.world/c/hot. The source instance is something completely different and shown in the post info bar below the title.

This can get awkward when I think I am commenting on a post I think is on lemmy.world or lemmy.ca when it might actually be lemmy.ml.

Highlighting the source instance a little better would be super awesome.

Emphasize / De-emphasize communities

I have no idea if this is possible to implement on the client side, but it would be really cool to be able to pick which subbed communities are emphasized or de-emphasized in your feed.

For example if you're on a niche sub that only gets a few posts per week, maybe you want to ALWAYS see new content regardless of how many upvotes or comments it gets.

Conversely, I enjoy a few meme subs, but right now Risa completely dominates new/hot/best filtering for me. I'd be perfectly happy just seeing the top few posts sprinkled throughout my feed.

1

Option to alphabetize Filters/Community filters

Would make it easier to keep track of what filters I have in place and delete duplicates

Connect settings export function

I would like to be able to export the settings I have for Connect so in case I ever have to reinstall this app I can restore all the settings I had for it instead of redoing everything manually.

For the distant future: Custom plugin support

This is just a super nice to have: Custom plugin support. ie: Something to think about during this stage of development as this app matures further.

As the Lemmy community grows, there are new functions that are getting released as separate apps and as open source that would be nice to incorporate into the "core" Connect app. Since our hailed dev probably has a life and a job outside of Connect development, it would be nice to be able to develop features outside of the main branch without causing too many headaches.

From a legal perspective, OSS licenses could be maintained separately from the main code branch which should push any liabilities to the third party developer. (I no lawyer, but this seems to make sense.)

Things like account sync between instances, custom community sorting and listing, blocking management (outside of filters and such) and many other on-a-whim features would be nice to develop on the side. The possibilities are endless. The core app could even stay closed source for now, which is totally cool at this stage.

The best functionally of all is that I could develop, test and YOLO new features myself without breaking everyone else on a global scale. If third party features become decent enough, they could possibly be implemented into Connect "core" at a later time.

I am fully aware this could cause a fundamental redesign of the application as a whole, so there is absolutely no rush. (TBH, I am thinking the implementation time of this request could take a couple of years.) Personally, I am a fan of applications that are somewhat modular so that is my bias.

Cheers, stay happy, stay healthy!

Video zoom

Zooming on static images is fine, but zooming on videos does not work.

While I personally prefer my SFW videos, I am sure the NSFW community would love this as well. ;)

3

Hide Communities

Please excuse this request if the option already exists, but is it possible to hide a community temporarily in the same way that keyword based filtering works? I watch some motorsports and for a given weekend just want to hide content from certain communities to avoid spoilers. I would prefer not to have to unsubscribe or block these communities every weekend. Is it possible to have a list of communities that one can toggle on and off? Thanks, I love the app so far!

Edit: Thank you for the 141 update. It solves the problem i was having!

Increase height of explore menu

When clicking the Explore icon on the bottom navigation bar, the menu that pulls up only covers about 1/3 of the screen. It's enough to type a search string, but it leaves little space for the results.

I think a better use of space would be to bring the whole menu up to the full height of the screen once a query has been entered, or at least allow the user to pull it up manually by dragging it upwards

2

reply to specific part of a comment

If I want to quote a specific part of a comment to reply to it, that's not possible with Connect right now unless manually copy pasting the segment.

Ideally, the existing "quote" option in the editor should take into account selected text

6

Add hide as an option for comment swipe controls

The post swipe controls have hiding the post as an option. Giving the comments the same options would allow for a consistent user experience.

3

Allow for customization of notification polling period

I'd like to turn on notifications in Connect, but I really don't want it polling for them every minute. Can we get some granularity for this feature?

1

Discord style sliding left nav

Add an option to enable a Discord-style sliding left nav (i.e. swipe from anywhere and the main view gets "pushed" off to the right by the left nav).

See Discord for more details on how this looks and works.

Long press on links to open them externally

When reading a web page within Connect, it would be nice if long-pressing on links in the webpage would give a popup with the option to open the link in an external browser (and probably also an option to just copy the link). I frequently find myself linked to Wikipedia from a Lemmy comment, and then want to open other links from that wiki page, so then I have to open the page I'm on externally and refind my spot in the article.

Having the same options when long-pressing a link in a comment/post would be nice as well.

7

URL Copy/Share

Currently, Connect will ask if you'd like to open a clicked URL. You only have yes or no options.

Adding a copy URL button would prevent having to view the page in order to access the copy URL option from there.

Adding the standard share button isn't as useful to me since I'm only trying to share URLs to friends. But I noticed the lack of this when I'd backed out of a page and figured I'd share it. But ended up having to view it again just to do so.

Additional option to make the comment button open comments section

As it stands, there doesn't seem to be an option to make the button for comments open the comments section on posts. It goes directly to leaving a comment.

There's a bunch of options that you can change that button (button 1, etc) in the settings to, including removing it altogether. I click the comment button every time, then I remember that I have to click the body of the post to see comments (resulting in backing out and extra clicks). I can't seem to get my muscle memory right on that - probably partially because I bounce back to Jerboa, where you do click the comment button to go to the comments.

As for visually, I like the button icon and comment count, so I think that's perfect - I would just love for there to be a setting to change the action from leaving a comment to go to comments section. Maybe "view comments" and "leave comment" in the settings to differentiate.

Pretty please? ❀️

4

Additional font sizes

Love using Connect but I find the Medium font size for posts view is too big and Small is too small. Would it be possible to add additional sizes or a slider for the size?

Horizontal swipe for next post (experimental)

Feature: Horizontal swipe for next post (experimental) Version: 1.0.120

Appreciation:

I previously suggested that the "left-to-right" swipe gesture take the user to the previous post, rather than out to the main scroll feed. This seems to have been implemented. Thank you Kuro!

Request 1:

However, there are now three "go back" user inputs with identical functionality. An in-app button in the top left, the standard phone back button in the bottom right, and the "left-to-right" swipe gesture. I think it would be useful if one of these took the user out to the main scroll feed. My suggestion would be the in-app button in the top left, as it is the least likely to press accidentally.

Request 2:

Not sure if this is a bug or intentional, but the "swipe for previous" gesture doesn't go past whichever post was originally selected from the main scroll feed. My ultimate Lemmy browsing experience would be "sort by new", scroll to the oldest post I have not yet viewed, and "swipe for previous" until I'm caught up to the present.

Request 3:

As I don’t use swiping gestures on comments, I would find it useful if the "swipe for next post" area were extended to include the comments section when "comment swipe actions" are disabled.

Bug:

Swiping for the previous post sometimes brings up the comments of the previous post, but not the previous post itself. The posts and comments are now out of sync with each other, and further "swipe for previous" gestures continue out of sync. As a workaround, "swipe for next" seems to usually sync the posts and comments back up with each other.

Thanks again, Kuro, for such a great Lemmy app, and for your solicitation and implementation of user feedback!
