- Go to your profile settings [/settings] - Tick enable 2FA - Click Save - Copy link of the 2FA installation link button - Extract the secret from the link - It is a random set of characters following the secret= bit - In the Linux world, this dirty pipe will extract it: echo "pastedlink" | cut -d'=...

In case anyone else is struggling with setting up 2FA (good practice for important accounts) with KeePassXC. I think you'll need version 2.5.0 or higher.

See https://keepassxc.org/docs/KeePassXC_GettingStarted#_downloading_keepassxc if you're not already using KeePassXC.

CAUTION: Lemmy currently doesn't generate TOTP backup keys. If you set up 2FA and lose your KeePass database you'll lose access to your account and can't reset it! Continuously backup your KeePass database!

  • I remember seeing some users say they were having issues a little while ago, although im unsure what ended up happening with that. If you do get locked out, message the admin's and they should be able to set the 2fa feild null to let you back in

    • You don't get logged out once you activate 2FA. So it's best to activate it, try to log in in a private browsing window and deactivate 2FA again if the login fails.
