Google said Thursday it will remove Canadian news content from its search, news and discover products after a new law meant to compensate media outlets comes into force.
This law popped up in various countries now and I cannot think of one single reason why this would be good for the news outlets.
The result will be exactly this.
Enforcing policies on when it is allowed to post a link will result in less diverse, and less free flow of information, no matter if the intention behind it is good or not.
Ya, I don't understand it either. The article does point out that it'll hurt smaller agencies even more, which is not surprising - I'm sure the bill came from the likes of Bell, etc.
Agreed. I would have understood if they were just targeting the 'quick answers' that Google displays using content from publishers, as it often prevents people from further clicking on the links. But any regulation on this needs drafter after consulting with all stakeholders, including the small publishers, before actually being implemented.
