Homicides went up in 2020 and 2021 and are now rapidly coming back down. Violent crime nationwide hasn't increased. But the perception of a crime wave still colors U.S. politics.
My favorite statistic on this topic is that there are roughly 8 times as many murders per capita in the US as in Germany and 4 times as many murders per capita in Mexico as in the US. So as a German the US is much less safe* in comparison of Mexico to the US. Something to think about.
