Hey Reddthat community,
Today I woke up to a very angry user who was the sole moderator of two communities here (c/gold and c/alchemy) who had reported a few posts and sent some PM's to a mod. (See screenshot, read from bottom to top)
Honestly, it hit us hard. Why would a user be so agressive against us? If they didn't want to see NSFW content they can hide in their profile, and unless we're mistaken it's hidden by default?
The mod team (currently just /u/reddthat and I) had a chat and thought about it. If a user PM'd any user with this type of abusive language we would immediately reprimand them. This is what we did.
So? I hear you say. Why are bothering to make this announcement?
This user clearly was under the wrong assumption about this instance, didn't know how to hide NSFW content, or has something against anime?
The question we want to ask our community are:
- What would you have done in this situation?
- What could we do to ensure no other users get the wrong idea?
We would like to get to know you all, work with you, and make it a place where everyone is welcome. We want to share memes that make us laugh, share images that excite us and find communities that make us feel at home. This user clearly did not understand that.

I'll preface all this by saying that the person who left the messages in the image on this post was out of line. Nobody should treat anybody else like that.
That said, I do think there's something we could learn from this situation.
I just joined and when I arrive the rules were already posted and very clear IMO.
Not having the context of the rules, I could see how someone might be surprised by the behavior of this site if they were expecting it to work the same way reddit does. I could be wrong, but I believe the way reddit works is that while it has NSFW content, that content doesn't show up in the main feed. If I understand how reddthat works, The user has to choose whether or not to see NSFW in the main feed.
When I signed up for my account, it was not clear to me whether that NSFW checkbox does. If it is unchecked, is all NSFW content hidden from me no matter how I try to access it, or is it just not added to the main feed that I see. Honestly, I still don't really know what the checkbox does.
I think the mods and admins are doing a fantastic job here. Thanks for setting up the site and for the transparency. It's fantastic.

The NSFW checkbox is an On/Off. You either see nsfe content or don't, that includes nsfw communities. It also is hard coded to blur the thumbnails and require you to click it to unblur. There are some definite rough edges currently which are known by the Lemmy devs but the priority seems to be fixing scaling issues currently, as the biggest instances are struggling hard!
There is little modification we can do without doing development work on Lemmy itself to even have descriptions of what the items do. (there are even options in the back end that i have no idea what they do!).
